ISC at Haileybury An excellent summer school in an amazing location Welcome to International Student Club, an English language summer school for international students aged 10-17 years. For the last 20 years we have held our courses are held at Haileybury, a beautiful, historic boarding school located between Cambridge and London. Haileybury was founded in 1862, has fantastic school facilities, comfortable accommodation and is set in hundreds of acres of beautiful grounds. We have just celebrated our 20th year of ISC. When I started the school in 1997 I wanted to have the best possible summer school in the best possible location, where I could enjoy being with the students every day. At Haileybury I found what I was looking for and I believe you will too. With the help of my husband, Martin, my co-course director, Allen Dadge, and our experienced, enthusiastic staff, we will provide you with a memorable educational experience. In our last British Council inspection we were awarded 9 areas of strength in staff management, student administration, quality assurance, premises and facilities, teaching, care of students, accommodation, leisure opportunities and care of under-18s. Our setting ISC s courses take place at Haileybury, a large, independent school that was founded in 1862. The school has over 500 acres of beautiful grounds, set in the Hertfordshire countryside. Haileybury is located near the town of Hertford and is only an hour from London and its airports. The school has a mix of historic and impressive, modern buildings that have won RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) architectural awards. There are fantastic sports facilities; including 8 tennis courts, football pitches and lots of outdoor playing fields. Students also have excellent facilities for theatre, art and leisure activities. There are lots of places for our students to relax and make new friends, including a bright, modern café and large common rooms in all the boarding houses. All of the boarding houses are within a 5 minute walk from the classrooms, dining hall, café and sports facilities. The campus has 24 hour security and there is always a member of staff available to help students. ISC is a wonderful place to spend your summer, learn English and make friends for life.
About ISC ISC is managed by me, Jill Cutting and my co-course director Allen Dadge. My husband and codirector, Martin McMahon, still gives his support and comes to visit us throughout the course. Between us, we have over 40 years of experience of organising summer schools. Our director of studies, Nicola Lee, oversees our friendly and experienced teaching team, who aim to provide you with fun, interesting and communicative lessons. Our enthusiastic activity director and staff organise a variety of entertaining activities, from sports to circus skills, for you to enjoy. The English courses You will have 15 hours of General English, British Culture and Project classes a week. We have an excellent team of experienced, professional and friendly teachers who were awarded a strength for teaching in our recent British Council inspection. Lessons are interesting and fun and focus on improving communication skills. We want to help you improve your confidence and fluency when using English. When you arrive, you will do a short test so that we can put you in the correct class. Our levels range from elementary to advanced. Students should have studied English for a year prior to studying at ISC. We do not offer classes for beginners. The first two lessons of each day are General English, in which you will learn about a variety of subjects and have lots of opportunities to practise your speaking with your international classmates. In the third lesson you will learn about British Culture, including the way of life, food, music and festivals. You also prepare for your excursions, where you can practise all the new English you learnt in class! The fourth lesson of the day is Project class. You will work with your classmates to create a drama Project. At the end of the course, we have an exciting Project show. Our teachers care about helping each individual student to progress and they use a variety of motivating activities, materials and technology to help you improve. Classes are small, with a maximum of 16 students and you will learn with classmates from all around the world. Learning is fun at ISC and we want to help you learn and use English to the best of your ability!
Activities Our enthusiastic activity staff organise a daily programme of sports, arts and crafts, competitions, dance workshops and games. During activities, you can use your English to communicate in real life situations and to make new friends. For some of the activities, you compete with your international Project team to win points for good participation, English and behaviour in and out of class. The Project teams compete to win the ISC Project cup, which is presented to the winners at the end of the course. Excursions You go on excursions two or three times a week to places of cultural or historical importance. ISC has a fantastic location and you visit London at least once a week. You also visit nearby Cambridge, Windsor, Hertford and St Albans. Our staff will give you guided tours on excursions, so you can learn all about British culture and history. We want you to be safe on trips, so we have a ratio of 1 adult per 15 students. On most trips there is free time for you to explore or go shopping with your new friends. There are also opportunities for you to visit a variety of exciting places on our Sunday optional trips. There is an extra charge for the optional excursions.
Secrets to Exam Success Optional Cambridge Exam Preparation Courses An exam preparation course designed specifically for students wanting to pass the Cambridge PET and FCE exams. You will practise exam strategies for reading, writing, listening and speaking and improve your communication skills in English. Students may take this optional course in addition to our General English course. Course Description Academic English Course Optional Course Our Academic English Course is for motivated students who wish to study full-time in the UK in the future. Students may take this optional course in addition to our General English course. Our professional and qualified teachers offer useful advice and information for UK academic life and courses take place at one of the UK s leading and most historic boarding schools. We aim to develop and practise essential academic skills and to nurture life skills that are necessary for studying away from home, such as time management, being independent and making international friends. Classes include a private tour of Haileybury and question and answer sessions regarding the UK education system and university life. Students will have the opportunity to 2 Week Courses improve their presentation skills and learn how to write an 9th 22nd July 2018 effective personal statement for UK university applications. 29th July 11th August 2018 Students will also benefit from practical lessons on essay writing and techniques for note-taking in university lectures. Accommodation Your boarding houses have a variety of rooms and spacious common areas for you to relax and make new friends. The common rooms have lots of things for you to enjoy, such as table tennis, table football, a TV and DVD player. Houses are single sex, but you can visit your friends in the common areas. Each house has a fully equipped kitchen, where you can share an evening snack with your housemates. We have comfortable single or twin rooms for older students and dormitory or multi-bedded rooms for our younger students. You share the house with your international housemates, giving you more opportunities to speak English. Bedding is provided and changed once a week, but you will need to bring a towel for showering. There is a laundry service in the second and third week for a small charge. We have members of staff in each house to help you and make you feel at home. Food Each day you will have breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the elegant dining hall. There is an excellent choice of food, with three different options for meals including a vegetarian option. For example at breakfast, you can choose a cooked breakfast or cereal, toast, croissants, etc. Please tell us about any dietary requirements, so we can cater for these. A variety of fruit is provided at all meal times. There is a café for you to buy snacks and drinks throughout the day. Each night in your houses, you can have a light supper of toast, biscuits and a drink before going to bed.
Welfare The most important thing for us, is that you are happy and cared for while you are at ISC, so that you have an enjoyable learning experience. We want you to know that we will look after you very well at ISC and help you however we can. Our office is open 8.30-22.00 every day and there is a head of house and other staff in your boarding houses after that time. If you have any problems, all of our staff are happy to help. Haileybury has a very safe campus, with 24 hour security. We expect you to stay on campus, except when you go on organised excursions with our staff. When on trips you should respect the school s rules, to help keep you safe. If you feel ill, we have first-aid trained staff on site and a doctor and two hospitals nearby. Your course directors Al, Jill and all the staff live on campus and you are given a 24 hour emergency telephone number, so you can contact them any time. Travelling Alone You have an opportunity to make international friends and speak more English in a safe environment Some of our students travel in groups, but we always have a lot of students who travel to the school alone or with a friend. We call these students individuals and we put you into an individuals group with a British group leader to look after you. This means you always have someone that you know well to go to if you have any problems. This truly international group makes it easier for students to make international friends and, of course, to do so in English. To ensure you are happy and well cared for, we: Appoint an experienced member of staff to take the role of Individuals Group Leader. Take registers 4 times a day - a chance to check all is OK. Keep pocket money in the school safe in the office, so you have regular contact with the course directors. Hold individuals meetings twice a week to give out information. Provide a dedicated group leader phone number and 24-hour emergency number. Help students develop their independence and improve their English very quickly.
