ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS Bloomsburg University, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications (AA#09-7-055). Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Associate Vice President (AVP) is responsible for all university marketing and communication strategies and programs. 22

BASHAR HANNA >70,000 Alumni Bloomsburg University, established in 1839, is a comprehensive public institution within the fourteen member Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, enrolls nearly 10,000 students in 56 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate programs. In July 2017, Dr. Bashar Hanna became the University s 19th President following the successful nine and a half year tenure of President David Soltz. The University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, listed in US News & World Report Best Colleges as a Best Regional University, and a NCAA Division II member. BU has an alumni base of more than 70,000 and recently completed the highly successful, It s Personal capital campaign surpassing its $50M goal by more than 20%. The university is comprised of 54 buildings on 366 acres and employs 555 faculty in the sciences, education, liberal arts, and business. THE POSITION The AVP is the chief spokesperson responsible for communicating the Bloomsburg University story and vision to both internal and external audiences to advance the university mission, while enhancing a climate of public and private support. The AVP advises the President and Vice President for University Advancement on positioning opportunities, collaborates with the University s colleges, strategic enrollment management, BU Foundation (BUF) and other university programs to guide the integrated planning and execution of outreach efforts 4 and all marketing and branding campaigns. The AVP also provides recommendations on policy and action in the management of issues and crises affecting the university. The AVP will serve as a member of the division s senior leadership team and the President s Cabinet. This position oversees eight team members and directly manages a Director of Media Relations & Content Strategies, Director of Sports Information, an Information Writer, and an Administrative Assistant.

Duties & Responsibilities Marketing and Publications Create strong marketing partnerships in developing, implementing, and leading the ongoing planning and execution of university marketing, advertising, public relations, and communications, both internal and external Conceptualize, produce, manage, and direct brand imaging and integrated communications in collaboration with the marketing, institutional departments, and BU Foundation, to target audiences including current and prospective students, faculty and staff, alumni, donors, and legislators Serve as the executive editor of the Bloomsburg University magazine Strategic Enrollment Management Lead the ongoing marketing efforts related to the enrollment management plan Promote a strong, progressive image of Bloomsburg University to prospective students and their parents Collaborate with the Admissions Office on all recruitment strategies Direct the marketing and communications staff in the development, design, implementation and delivery of all marketing collateral and communications Oversee continual enhancements to the Bloomsburg University website Develop and direct official internal and external publications to ensure proper and consistent presentation of the university and its programs Manage, measure and continually improve internal (student, faculty, and staff) and external (prospective students, parents, donors, alumni) communications via a data/metricdriven approach Media and Public Relations Oversee the development and placement of appropriate news and feature stories, both print and electronic, to ensure university name recognition and visibility locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally Lead and monitor the implementation of effective and emerging communication (social media) trends and strategies Build on an established framework of positive community and town-gown relations Provide strategic marketing guidance and partner with the University s colleges, departments, and business units to achieve strategic enrollment goals 5

Duties & Responsibilities Communication Facilitation Communication Strategies Advise senior leadership on communication strategies, developing written communications, messaging, and content for them as needed Coordinate open communication between various constituent groups, both internal and external, through committee work, personal visits and publications Using market search findings, intuitive judgment and BU subject matter experts, author, refine and update university key messages and talking points that additionally inform the development and consistency of all communications Work closely with State System offices and appropriate consultants to ensure university mission and goals, and the associated messages are properly articulated Provide leadership and direct support on communications, working closely with the communications team and senior leadership crisis crisis Develop and manage a crisis communication plan Develop and manage media events Serve as Bloomsburg University s chief spokesperson in crisis situations T eam Supervision and Office Management Direct the marketing and communication team. Establish yearly goals for each staff member that align with university and division goals Develop and implement budgets for the marketing and communication office and the university magazine Liaison with all external marketing and communication vendors/partners, and oversee university licensing and athletic sponsorships 6

Position Requirements, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required A Master s degree in marketing and/or communications, or related field Minimum of 7 10 years of progressively responsible experience in areas of marketing, communications, and strategic planning Have the ability to interact with a diverse range of people, including the ability to build trust and consensus with university constituents Possess well-developed analytical, organizational, supervisory, reasoning, problem solving and conflict resolution skills along with effective communication skills to include excellent written and oral communication skills Demonstrable experience in marketing, branding, media, and public relations Preferred Broad functional experience in higher education Innovative and creative experiences designing and producing publications (including magazines), interactive web, and digital media Ability to create and implement a crisis communication plan An action-oriented individual who possesses high energy and will lead their team with honesty, integrity, perseverance and compassion Have exceptional leadership, budgetary, and organizational competencies Demonstrate a commitment to excellence and be part of an evolving, energetic, and forward-thinking university dedicated to inclusion, access, and diversity 7
