Our staff fosters a wholesome, healthy environment in which students are encouraged to be resourceful and responsible individuals. We also promote a respect for the right and dignity of others. It is our goal that each child, as an individual with strengths, weaknesses and a cultural background, be given the means to fully realize his/ her poten(al Facts at a Glance École Sacré-Coeur is the first French Immersion school in Manitoba. École Sacré-Coeur is a French Immersion Milieu school. École Sacré-Coeur is the first school in the Winnipeg School Division to offer Reading Recovery in French. École Sacré-Coeur received the Best Spirited School Award at the Canada 150 History Exposition held at the University of Winnipeg. This is a province-wide event. Priorities for 2017-18 1. Increase and strengthen the usage of the oral French language in all areas of the school. Strengthen French reading skills and comprehension at all levels. Students will have the opportunity to celebrate the French language by participating in various activities such as the Festival du Voyageur,Concours d Art Oratoire, Fantasie Choir, Programmes de sciences et la foire historique. Reading Recovery, reading groups and Book Buddies will continue to be offered in French. 2. Strengthen instructional and assessment strategies with a specific focus on Math for all students using available divisional data. Teachers will become more numeracy data literate in order to guide math instruction. Select Grade 5-6 teachers will participate in the WSD Math Course. 3.Strengthen and enhance Education for Sustainable Development initiatives that address environment, social and economic issues. The ESD Green Team continues to work towards an Outdoor Learning Space for students and the community. In addition, École Sacré- Coeur s social action group C.A.A.S.C. will continue to explore and to support various initiatives and charities. 4. Increase Aboriginal Education and perspective in all areas. The AAA committee will continue to meet and to plan for our student Families to learn about the Seven Teachings and participate in related activities. The committee will help teachers identify which learning practises are needed in their teachings. 3.Strengthen and enhance our outdoor space into an Outdoor Learning Space so that rich learning experiences can take place outdoors. 4.Continue to support the integration of Indigenous perspectives, contributions and education in all subject areas.

Highlights Saturday Morning Art Classes - Each year, several students are selected to attend Saturday Morning Art Classes at The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG). The students participate in art activities using a variety of mediums for 9-10 weeks. In the spring, their work is showcased at the WAG. Quantum Arts Program - Thirteen Grades 7 & 8 students participated in the various arts domains. These included art at the WAG, dance at RWB and theatre at PTE. The finale performance was held at The Winnipeg Art Gallery. Everyone Has The Right Initiative- As part of Winnipeg School Division's contribution to the Human Rights Museum, École Sacré-Coeur students participated in three day sessions. This year s sessions focused on the human library and story-telling. The last session was held at the Human Rights Museum. Students brought artifacts and related them to their own identifies. Schools have created two large puzzle pieces in connection to these artifacts. EHTR initiative continues in the fall. STEAM Enrichment Centre - Four students took part with students from across the division in an inquiry based program focusing on excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math Education (STEAM). This program was offered en français this year. Inner-City Science Programs- Eighteen students in Grades 7 & 8 became scientists in training while receiving science lab training and learning at Niji Mahkwa s state of the art laboratory. Eighteen Grades 5 & 6 students also explored science, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication at Niji Mahwka. Both programs were offered en français. Invention Convention Grades 7 & 8 students invented a product using the design process in their science class with Mme. Routledge. Select students participated in Red River s Invention Convention in May. ESD Initiatives The ESD committee secured a $1500 grant from Toyota Evergreen along with funds from our Family BBQ, the committee will work with Toyota Evergreen to create an Outdoor Learning Space with garden boxes, a petroglyph turtle-shaped outdoor seating space and plant shade trees. French Language and Culture Promoting the French language and culture continues to be a priority at École Sacré-Coeur. Students participated in various events connecting the French language beyond the classroom. - Festival du Voyageur activities with special guest Tibert le Voyageur - Foire Historique History Exposition celebrating Canada s 150th. We won Best Spirited School Award for our enthusiasm. A donation of $250 for books related to history and free entry to Davenport Museum for two classes was given. Students also won awards from the St. Boniface Museum for excellence in French speaking. - Students in Grades 3 to 8 participated in the Concours d Art Oratoire. The focus of the speeches for Grades 3 to 6 was Canada famous Canadians, inventions, events. - Students in Grade 6 participated in a Division French Immersion choir called Fantasie. Students were transported by bus to École Laverendry where they sang along side other French Immersion students. - Grade 6 students from rooms 138 & 139 read the daily announcement in French. Students in Grades 2-8 acted as master of ceremonies at our choir performances, French speaking contest and other events. Philanthropy At École Sacré-Coeur we feel it is important for our students to be thankful for what they have but also to gain a sense of what else is going on in the world around them. ÉSC has a social action group C.A.A.S.C that works hard to support various charities. This year we supported the following charities: - Winnipeg Harvest - Terry Fox - IRCOM and ROW - Day of Pink, Rainbow Day - Day of Silence - Heart & Stroke Foundation Indigo Adopt-A-School Polo Park s Indigo store adopted our school. With on-line and in-school donations, we received over 500 new books in both languages. Aboriginal Academic Achievement All students walked in support of residential school survivors on September 30th, Every Child Matters. Students wrote messages to the survivors. Three classes worked with our Indigenous support teacher and explored and deepened their understanding of treaties. During Festival Week, students learned and played Indigenous games, dances & music.
