PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST RELEASE EVENT 1: STAIR CLIMB Task Description: The applicant shall climb a 3-story stairwell for a total of three times. Time allowed: 4 minutes. EVENT 2: SLEDGE SWING Task Description: The applicant shall repeatedly swing a sledge hammer in a chopping motion at a weighted object using enough force to move the object a total distance of approximately 5 feet. EVENT 3: 1- ¾ HOSE DRAG Task Description: 4 connected lengths of 1 ¾ dry hose with a nozzle attached will be folded in a standard manner on the ground. The applicant will grasp the hose line and advance 75ft. in a straight line, make a 90 degree turn and continue an additional 25 ft. The applicant shall stop within the marked area and dropping to one knee, pull the hose line until 50ft. of hose is within the marked area. EVENT 4: EQUIPMENT CARRY Task Description: The applicant shall remove two saws from a tool cabinet and place them on the ground. The applicant shall then pick up both saws and carry them while walking 75ft., turn 180 degrees and continue walking back to the starting point where the applicant shall return the saws back into the tool cabinet. EVENT 5: LADDER RAISE AND EXTENSTION Task Description: The applicant shall approach the top rung of a 24ft. extension ladder, lift the unhinged end from the ground, and walk it up hand over hand until it is stationary against a wall. The applicant shall then immediately proceed to a secured 24ft. ladder, and using the ladder Halyard rope extend the fly section to the top and then back down in a controlled hand over hand fashion. EVENT 6: RESCUE Task Description: The applicant shall grasp a mannequin approx. 165lbs and drag it 35ft. to a pre-positioned drum, make a 180 degree turn around the drum and return 35ft. to the finish line. Total time allowed for Events 2-6: 5 minutes, 30 seconds. * The applicants shall walk 85 ft. along an established walkway to and between each event. Time continues to run during the walk between events. Remaining time from Event 1 may not be applied to Events 2-6. Applicants will wear a 50 lb. vest and two 12.5 lb. shoulder weights during Event 1, applicants will wear a 50 lb. vest during Events 2-6. TESTING INFORMATION Complete the Writing, Reading and Math Assessment Tests at the Central Park Campus Testing Center in McKinney. Candidates must meet the minimum score requirement on all assessment tests to be eligible for the Physical Ability Test. The assessment tests are specifically designed for our programs and are not the same as the college entrance exams. Everyone is required to take these tests. You will need to obtain a Campus Wide ID (CWID) number before being able to take the assessments. Two attempts are allowed per semester. ACADEMY OVERVIEW SESSION The Academy Overview and Physical Ability Demonstration Session provides students the opportunity to learn about the Fire Academy, and participate in the various components of the required Physical Ability Test. Prospective students will learn about job opportunities, entrance requirements, and expectations while enrolled in the Fire Academy. A brief session explaining the Physical Ability Test will include a hands-on opportunity to handle the equipment used in the Physical Ability Test. The Academy Overview session is not mandatory. FUNCTIONAL POSITION DESCRIPTION Texas Commission on Fire Protection Standards Manual 421.3 - Minimum Standards Set by the Commission 1. Structural fire protection personnel. The following general position description for structural fire protection personnel serves as a guide for anyone interested in understanding the qualifications, competencies, and tasks required of the fire fighter operating in the State of Texas. It is ultimately the responsibility of an employer to define specific job descriptions within each jurisdiction. A. Qualifications. Successfully complete a commission approved course; achieve a passing score on written and performance certification examinations; must be at least 18 years of age; generally, the knowledge and skills required show the need for a high school education or equivalent; ability to communicate verbally, via telephone and radio equipment; ability to lift, carry, drag, and balance weight equivalent to the average human weight; ability to interpret in English, written and oral instructions; ability to work effectively in high stress situations; ability to work effectively in an environment with loud noises and flashing lights; ability to function through an entire work shift; ability to calculate weight and volume ratios; ability to read and understand English language manuals including chemical, medical and technical terms, and road maps; ability to accurately discern street signs and address numbers; ability to document in English, all relevant information in prescribed format in light of legal ramifications of such; ability to converse in English with coworkers and other emergency response personnel. Good manual dexterity with ability to perform all tasks related to the protection of life and property; ability to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven surfaces; ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture; and ability to work in low or no light, confined spaces, elevated heights and other dangerous environments. B. Competency. A basic fire fighter must demonstrate competency handling emergencies utilizing equipment and skills in accordance with the objectives in Chapter 1 of the commission's Certification Curriculum Manual.
