Study Options
Course structure Each course is five-weeks You will be given a short placement test on the first day On the last Friday of the five-week program you will do listening, speaking, reading and writing tests If you pass you can progress up a level Typically students will spend 10 weeks at each level
General English (GE) GE levels from 1-7 are offered for courses from 5-45+ weeks in length Ideal for students who want to improve their ability to communicate in English in social and work situations Classes are topic based, interactive and dynamic Course materials print and digital Course content focuses on a balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing tasks Students learn through class activities, individual, pair and small group work
Advanced English Communication Skills (AECS) One level Pre-advanced Challenges students with advanced language skills to strengthen their speaking and listening abilities Students work together to write and produce a group project such as writing and performing a live play, directing and filming a documentary or producing individual video diaries (digital stories) Course content and materials are drawn from a wide variety of sources including advanced English course books, real-life television, radio shows and movies, magazines, journals, books and the internet
English for International Business Communication (EIBC) Two levels Higher Intermediate and Pre-advanced Develops confidence to use English in real-world business situations Enables students to gain knowledge of current business terminology, communication practices, contributing to business meetings and writing business reports Class exercises and projects are based around a weekly business theme such as Setting up a Business, Team Building, Negotiation, Marketing or Customer Service EIBC classes use role-plays, case studies, workplace visits with business people and listening and note-taking activities
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Two levels Higher Intermediate and Pre-advanced Prepares students for academic study and the IELTS test Develops academic language, study and research skills Course content includes: Reading academic texts and writing essay texts Organising, writing and delivering a spoken presentation Watching and discussing documentary style programs to develop listening and vocabulary skills Opportunity to practise listening and note-taking IELTS preparation and practice
ESP: TESOL Session 7 & 8 One level - Higher Intermediate For students who are considering becoming a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) or who are already ESL teachers in their own country Develops English language skills through topics of general and TESOL-related content and includes preparation for the Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) Course content includes: Development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through topics of general interest and TESOL-related content Analysis and discussion of current methods for teaching English and practice teaching sessions Preparation for the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)
Bridging English Program (BEP) Two options BEP Advantage and BEP Standard A 10-,15-, 20-, 25- or 30-week English language pathway to UQ programs Available for students who already meet all the academic requirements for UQ entry, but require further English language training Students can use their BEP exit grades to demonstrate they meet UQ English language entry requirements they do not need to sit another IELTS test Provides students with the specialist English language communication and academic skills for UQ degree study undergraduate and postgraduate programs

Online learning In addition to 20 hours of faceto-face teaching each week, ICTE-UQ courses include: - an online, self-paced program including more than 5000 activities covering each of the four main skill areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Living in Homestay HOMESTAY IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO: Live with an Australian family Learn about how Australians live and about Australian culture Practice using English outside of the classroom HOMESTAY CAN BE A VERY REWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR GUESTS AND FAMILIES. HOWEVER, LIVING WITH NEW PEOPLE CAN SOMETIMES BE CHALLENGING
Living in Homestay Top 5 tips for a happy Homestay experience 1. Be prepared for your homestay family to be different from your own. 2. Be prepared for your homestay family to be different than you expect. The Australian community is diverse and made up of different cultures and different kinds of families. 3. Communicate with your family some of the most common problems in homestay can be easily avoided or resolved by asking questions and talking to your homestay family. 4. Be prepared to travel up to one hour to and from campus each day. Brisbane is a low urban density city. Houses are far apart. Travel distances and times may be longer than you are used to. 5. Make sure you tell your homestay family if you will be home late or will miss dinner your homestay family cares about you and needs to know where you are.
Living in Homestay Homestay accommodation includes A bedroom of your own with a wardrobe and desk Access to family areas of the home Some meals Breakfast and Dinner from Monday Friday Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on Saturday and Sunday You may need to make your own breakfast (and lunch on weekends) using food provided by your Homestay family Talk to your family about where you can keep extra food that you buy for yourself (eg: weekday lunches) Some homes may have internet. You may need to pay a small fee to use this.
