I. Program Overview Kyoto University celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2017. Over the years, we have constantly provided high-quality education while opening up new realms of science. The general and specialized education at Kyoto University is aimed at nurturing global leaders for the 21st century. Building on our tradition of respecting and encouraging academic freedom, Kyoto University launched a new undergraduate program for international students, Kyoto iup, in this milestone year. Kyoto iup comprises a six-month preparatory course followed by a four-year undergraduate program. In the first two-and-a-half years, students develop an essential understanding of foundation subjects in English/Japanese and acquire sufficient Japanese language proficiency to attend specialized lectures given in Japanese, and to pursue advanced studies in the final two years based on their acquired Japanese proficiency. This four-and-a-half-year program is also designed to enable students to think flexibly and act with initiative, backed by language proficiency and a multicultural mindset. Upon completion of this program, students will have in-depth expertise and an extensive understanding of the world, which will help them play a leadership role in various fields in international society. Kyoto University is now prepared to support Kyoto iup students at all phases, taking full advantage of our long experience of fostering international students from around the globe and supporting them in their studies, researches, day-to-day living and career development. Applicants will be evaluated according to a fair and holistic approach based on submitted documents and interviews, regardless of ethnicity, race, age, gender, religion or disability. Major features and strengths of the program are as follows. Kyoto iup comprises a six-month preparatory course and a four-year undergraduate program. Upon graduation, Kyoto iup students will be awarded a bachelor s degree in their selected major. The program is available at the following faculties.* 1 The selection of faculty and division/department cannot be changed once declared at the time of application. Faculty of Integrated Human Studies* 2 - Social Sciences and Humanities - Natural Sciences Faculty of Letters Faculty of Education Faculty of Law Faculty of Economics Faculty of Engineering* 2 - Global Engineering - Architecture - Engineering Science - Electrical and Electronic Engineering - Informatics and Mathematical Science - Industrial Chemistry 1

Faculty of Agriculture* 2 - Bioresource Science - Applied Life Sciences - Agricultural and Environmental Engineering - Food and Environmental Economics - Forest and Biomaterials Science - Food Science and Biotechnology * 1 The Faculties of Science, Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences are currently not included. * 2 Applicants for the Faculties of Integrated Human Studies, Engineering and Agriculture need to choose one of the divisions/departments they wish to enroll in at the time of application. Applicants are not required to have Japanese language proficiency at the time of application, as Kyoto iup students will be provided with intensive Japanese courses in the first six months of the program, while the advanced courses they will take in the following two years will afford them sufficient proficiency to attend regular undergraduate program lectures and seminars in Japanese from their third year. It is essential for those who wish to study social sciences or humanities to spend far more time learning the Japanese language than those who are applying to science/engineering-related faculties/divisions, in order to keep up with the classes offered at the undergraduate level of Kyoto University. Therefore, it is necessary for applicants to have a strong motivation to learn the Japanese language, for example, if they are already studying it. Kyoto iup students will be selected through the university s Admissions Office, which comprises admission specialists and experienced international faculty members. The admission process entails application document screening and interviews. Applicants are expected to have high-level academic achievement and English language competence, and demonstrate motivation and a worldview aligned with their future goals. At the end of the preparatory course, there will be qualifying tests in subjects prepared by the faculties of the applicants choice at the time of application in addition to Japanese language requirements. Those who satisfy all the requirements, performing well in the preparatory course and passing the qualifying tests, are guaranteed enrollment in their respective faculties. Upon enrollment in their faculty, Kyoto iup students will be regular Kyoto University undergraduate degree-seeking students. In the first two years of the program, they will study liberal arts courses with other degree-seeking students in English and/or Japanese. This will be followed by two-years specialized education, with major subjects taught mainly, or exclusively, in Japanese. Scholarships that include full or partial admission and tuition fee waivers and monthly allowances are available. On-campus accommodations are available for the first year. Extensive career support is provided for graduate studies and employment in and outside Japan. We look forward to welcoming motivated high-potential students to Kyoto University. 2
