SECTION A Plan of action chalked out by the institute in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement Introduction Plan of action for the academic programmes is formulated in a democratic and participatory manner through consultative process across various levels - from the university senate down to the individual departments. The IQAC constituted in the initial year of NAAC accreditation monitors the planning and implementation process as well as the review of various academic programmes. Commencing from the academic transactions at the Board of Studies meeting (with internal Faculty and external experts) at the department level, through the periodic meeting of Heads of departments at the Institute level, the process of planning and execution is carried forward through the Academic council and further up to the Syndicate and Senate meetings, in order to get their approval for the proposed academic, research and extension programmes. All the teaching staff reported for duty a week in advance of the reopening of the Institute with the purpose of grounding the activities planned. Students were provided with Time Table, calendar and orientation for the academic year. All the students were asked to register for courses on the re opening day. All the faculties/departments/centres initiated necessary measures for the implementation of the activities planned. In addition, the individual departments framed their own plan of action aimed at enhancing quality in all the three dimensions of education namely, teaching, research and extension. The details are given below faculty and department wise. To establish a Centre for Distance education FACULTY OF RURAL SOCIAL SCIENCES Cooperation Initiating measures to restructure the existing B.Coop. degree programme into B.A Cooperation so as to fall in line with UGC notification Taking measures to strengthen the research programmes including post doctoral research. Economics Re-structuring of M.Phil. Economics Programme Revising Syllabus of M.A. Business Economics in line with UGC model curriculum Gandhian Thought and Peace Science Providing quality education in various aspects of Gandhian Thought, Peace studies and Conflict resolution. Facilitating research and extension work towards rural reconstruction, communal harmony and thereby restoring Gandhian ideology among the community, leading to peace. _ A nnual Q uality A ssurance R eport (-03) 1

To give academic and training inputs to the students of Gandhian Thought through appropriate courses and guidance in counseling. To offer courses on the weaker sections, the Disabled and the Aged, to make the students to understand the problems of the disadvantaged. To organize the National conference of Indian society of Gandhian studies. Microbiology (Self-finance) programme. To organize faculty improvement programme. To provide knowledge support to the students by innovative methods of teaching (ICT) To organize peer tutorials for slow learners. To prepare for the introduction of four elective courses in Plant Science, Animal Science so as to enable the M.Sc Applied Biology programme to be on par with M.Sc Botany and Zoology. To prepare the students for taking up research and extension on areas related to different areas of Biology. To plan activities for knowledge up gradation of teachers, research scholars and students. To plan to participate of faculty in presenting and publishing of research papers in Journal/Seminar/Conference. Chemistry To create manpower and resources for chemical industries and quality personnel to teach Chemistry in higher educational institutions. Designing of curriculum keeping in view the model UGC curriculum. To expose the students to the recent developments in the frontiers of Chemistry and to bring the research scholars into the practice of publishing the results in international journals. Rural Technology Centre To develop technologies most relevant to the region and to come up with technology alternatives and delivery systems for use by the government. To collaborate with the government departments in the development of the district by providing block level and district level technology plans suited to particularly to employment generation. To provide technological guidance to voluntary agencies and social workers in the southern part of the country. To strengthen the laboratory facilities for B.Sc. Rural Technology and B.Sc.Sustainable Technology Management. To arrange for internship for the students in rural industries Centre for Future Studies To organize a regional seminar on People, Plants and Future in collaboration with Dept. of Biology. FACULTY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT Adult continuing Education and Extension To appoint extension workers and work through them in the service villages to reach wider number of beneficiaries To offer need based skill training programmes To publish Newsletter titled Vision in English and Grama Munetram in Tamil Applied Research To encourage interdisciplinary research in M.Phil. To use the expertise of M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation in the above programmes FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY To revise the syllabus for Diploma in Agriculture To start an M.Sc. Dairy Science programme To publish research articles in refereed journals and popular articles in leading magazines To conduct a seminar on Indigenous Agricultural Practices To disseminate latest technologies in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry through various programmes. To organize field placement and study tour for students. To strengthen library facilities by the purchase of latest books and journals. To plant seedlings on the sides of farm road and in the service villages through VPP. To promote and preserve indigenous games like kabaddi prevailing in the villages SECTION B Details in respect of the following 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institute General Knowledge of students is upscaled by designing new programmes, introducing new courses, revising the syllabi periodically, and providing options for students to choose from a variety of courses. Research is focused around contemporary problems confronting the communities around and the society at large, with the aim of generating scientific and pragmatic Workshop on personality development for PG final year students solutions. Disadvantaged groups in the communities around and the general community are constantly supported and guided to become informed citizens. National Seminar organized by Dept. of Political Science Current developments in society are debated by Faculty across the state and country in specific fora; proceedings are documented for public use and policy recommendations are forwarded to the change agents. Collaboration established with Government, research and training institutions, industry, NGOs and Funding partners complement the academic, research and community service programmes. Institute follows the reservation policy of the Government in admissions and appointments and supports the students from economically and socially disadvantaged groups with financial assistance. husbandry, health, housing, literacy, nutrition and allied sectors, leading to integrated rural development as envisaged in the objectives. In addition, each department has its own programmes as detailed below: Distance Education Centre was established on January ; and 2 M.Phil, 4 PG Diploma and 3 Diploma Courses were introduced. FACULTY OF RURAL SOCIAL SCIENCES Cooperation Offers programmes and courses in cooperation and its allied branches Organizes outreach activities and field exposure visits, knowledge and experience sharing through seminar and workshops Takes up action / policy research Develops replicable models through extension Economics Offers programmes and courses in Economics and its allied branches; Conducts need based rural economic research studies Arranges village camps, extension activities, exposure visits. Organizes seminars, workshops for creating human capital for rural economic organizations Undertakes consultancy for institutions for rural economic development. Gandhian Thought and Peace Science Offers B.A. Rural Reconstruction programme and courses in Gandhian Thought. Conducts need based rural reconstruction programmes based on Gandhian philosophy. Organizes village camps, extension activities, exposure visits. Arranges seminars, workshops for creating human resources for rural welfare organizations and communities. Rural Industries Management Seven Training Programmes on Skill Development in manufacturing bakery products were organized for 420 women Self Help Group members of the districts of the Nilgiris and Perambalur. Placement services offered to nearly 50% of students of BA (RIM) FACULTY OF RURAL ORIENTED SCIENCES Biology Research is facilitated among Post graduate students through dissertation; submitted proposals on need based biological themes for students funding projects like TNSCST, Chennai. Research scholars are encouraged to submit proposals to funding agencies such as UGC, DBT, DST, and New Delhi and apply for fellowship to carryout eco-friendly, easily adaptable and replicable research for the upliftment of the rural masses to improve the quality of life. Extension activities are carried out by curricular activities and also by conducting training programmes to rural people, SC, ST, unemployed youth and others on mushroom culture, vermiculture, ornamental fish culture, sericulture, composting etc through funded projects for economic uplift, employment generation, family nutrition and environmental protection. Chemistry The syllabus was revised keeping in view the needs of the industry Students are trained to go to the villages and involve themselves in classroom teaching in village schools. To inculcate the spirit of competition, various intra and inter college events were conducted as part of the Science Day celebrations and Resonance, the Department festival. Dr.G.Karthikeyan organized a one day workshop on installation and working, operation details of hand pump attachable deflouridation plants (for Panchayat Presidents on Aug 29. ) With the assistance from C.P.Ramaswamy Foundation, Chennai, a cycle rally was organized with the students of UG and PG Chemistry programmes as volunteers to encourage rain water harvesting led by Dr.M.G.Sethuraman and Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu in the Jubilee Fest Dr.S.Abraham John on 1 st. Physics The department has been providing quality education by providing the best possible learning inputs to the students. In addition to this the students are given training in teaching children of schools situated in rural areas. This is done with a view to improving the standard of science learning and to inculcate the spirit of learning science amongst the rural children. This helps the students of GRU to have a good grasp of the subject Home Science Incorporated important aspects in UG/PG curriculum as suggested in UGC Model Curriculum. Undertaken research to promote family and social well being Rural Technology Centre The RTC strengthens itself to add the Technology dimension to the Rural Institute by building activities in the following four major avenues. a) Development oriented technologies b) Technology restructuring for mass employment c) Delivery models d) Innovative courses and training programmes FACULTY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT Adult Continuing Education and Extension 22 awareness generation programmes were conducted to increase knowledge on current issues and 3929 men & women were benefited. Three skill training sessions were conducted and 100 villagers were benefited. 14 continuing education courses were conducted and 727 men and women were benefited. Through collaborative programme with NGOs, 313 men & women of NGOs were benefited on career guidance. 774 secondary and higher secondary students benefited with the financial aid from Central Social Welfare Board. Three Awareness Generation training camps were conducted. 128 women field workers were trained. The staff of the department participated in an All India Radio programme. Vision and Gram Munetram were published. Extension Education The department organized village placement programmes for the entire institute and various other outreach programmes so as to fulfill the objective of the institute The Department offers extension-based, development-oriented post graduate and doctoral programmes. The Department has been carrying out research in Extension and Rural Development. It undertakes monitoring and evaluation for Government and Non-Government organizations. The Department has an active Centre on Participatory Learning and Management Techniques. The broad areas of research include rural development, women development, tribal development, micro finance and community based organizations. _ A nnual Q uality A ssurance R eport (-03) 9

It has taken up action based research in the field of hunger free area programme and disability. The Department provides consultancy to various government departments, NGOs, funding agencies both national and international on Participatory Rural Development, Community Based Organizations, Participatory Rural Appraisal, Micro Plan, Disability and Tribal Development. It imparts training to extension functionaries at different levels in emerging fields such as participatory methods, community based organization and Micro-planning Centre for Futures Studies Carrying out interdisciplinary research Rural Energy Centre Taluk Level Biomass Assessment was carried out at Karur and Palani Taluks to evaluate the feasibility of power generation from biomass. Innovations in curricular design and transaction General The Curricular programmes of GRU are conceived and designed bearing in mind the contemporary issues confronting the society at large, with inputs from a multitude of sections. The Programmes are designed through expert knowledge, findings of research projects, outcomes of seminars / workshops, students feedback, interaction with the community, public consultations and suggestions by development organizations. The Content of Programmes and Courses, shaped by such wide consultations, are again structured at the Board of Studies meetings and strengthened at the Academic Council meeting, before it is finally delivered to the Not contented with such a laborious but pragmatic process, the curriculum is subjected to periodic scrutiny by subject experts every three years and earlier if warranted, modified and strengthened to make it current and comprehensive with the objective of making the students employable. Gandhian Thought and Peace Science There are field exposure visits bringing together classroom teaching and field realities. Political Science and Development Administration Extension activities of the students are based on PRA. Rural Industries Management The syllabus for BA (RIM) and MA (RIM) programmes has been revised in order to enhance the practical inputs given to the students in skill development. FACULTY OF RURAL ORIENTED SCIENCES Biology In M.Sc. Applied Biology programme, four elective courses for each semester were introduced separately for Plant Sciences and for Animal Sciences so as to enable the M.Sc Applied Biology Programme students be treated on par with M.Sc Botany and M.Sc Zoology students. Chemistry The existing laboratory course in Quantitative Inorganic Chemistry has been strengthened with the designing of newer experiments to suit the requirements of the pharmaceutical and other chemical industries. In quantitative Organic Chemistry practical, a few experiments on isolation of natural products have been included Physics Dr.G.Muralidharan and Dr.P.Vickraman, recorded a number of half an hour long video lectures on Basic Electronics and Electricity Magnetism at AVRC, Anna University. These lectures are part of the UGC video lecture series. Rural Technology Centre Curriculum based on local technological needs More practical content and practice-based learning Incorporating live projects for the benefit of the students Field visits and technology diffusion as part of students curriculum FACULTY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT Adult continuing Education and Extension Career counseling was started in the schools of service villages. Since July 2001, 54 women SHGs and 16 men SHGs have been formed. The groups have saved Rs.368000 which has been given as micro-credit to the members. Children s clubs have been formed in 75 villages. Extension Education Subject-based extension field visit, internship, summer placement and field exposure visit to Research and Development organizations, NGOs, Corporate offices and Govt. organizations have been undertaken. 26. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results, issue of certificates The entire admission process is computerized using Visual Foxpro. The office automation has already been effected in various sections of the administrative office. The office of the Controller of Examination is fully automated. Publication of results and issuing of certificate have been made easy using computers. 27. Increase in the infrastructural facilities The Institute has established a Sanitation Park, a Technology Park, Soundarya Day Care Centre and an Internet Browsing centre on campus. The Silver Jubilee arch constructed at a cost of 3 lacs was declared open by Shri. R.Venkatraman, His Excellency the former President of India on 3.8.. The Institute came up with a centralized water distribution system with a capacity of 1 lac litres. The Multipurpose auditorium was inaugurated by the Chairman, UGC, which was built at a cost of 66 lacs. Remodeling of the staff quarters was done at a cost of Rs.50.44 lacs Computerization of Examination section was done at a cost of Rs.26.14 lacs Rain water harvesting was done at a cost of Rs.9.99 lacs. An arboretum with 60 different varieties of tree species was established in an area of 4 acres for teaching as well as creating awareness among the public. 28. Technology upgradation The Examination wing was computerized in March by utilizing the special grant of Rs.28 lacs received from UGC. Some Faculties / Departments upgraded their teaching aids. Some Departments have acquired LCD, Scanner, Digital camera for effective teaching aid. Gyanvani programmes, video conferencing and other audio-visual aids are used as effective means of teaching. Faculty of Agriculture has introduced Alley cropping system in the farms. It has also introduced animal rearing as part of its Animal Husbandry activity. Preliminary studies have been completed by Chemistry department for the commercialization of a few green corrosion inhibitors. The Biology department has developed a low cost bacteriological water testing kit. Rural Energy Centre has propagated energy conservation technologies in cooking and lighting and renewable energy technologies. Eight different labour saving farm machines such as bullock drawn seed planter, paddy threshing aid, groundnut stripper etc., were developed and farmers have been apprised of these advancements. Periodical inputs are given to the staff on the usage of office automation. 40. Good practices of the Institution: GRI, being a Gandhian Institution, imparts value based education The day at begins with an inter - religious prayer The Friday prayer where the community assembles is another healthy practice The Gurukula system wherein the students are attached to a guru addresses many of the issues faced by them. The Departmental committee which meets twice in a semester takes into account the views of the students on various academic and administrative matters. The student representative elected to the senate voices the views of the student. Thus student participation in the running of the Institute is ensured. The village placement programme, the unique feature of the rural university, imparts values and social responsibilities to the students. Further VPP functions as gateway through which the student, staff and scholars get first hand knowledge of the problems of the rural people. The stakeholders response through VPP helps the institute to reshape its policies and strategies to bring about holistic change in the rural scenario. Rural Agricultural Work experience (RAWE) was included in the curriculum for Diploma in Agriculture by allotting 4 credits Method demonstration in the field 41. The National Institute of Rural Development has selected GRI as a resource Institution for conducting Leadership Training for grassroot level functionaries and leaders. The Department of Chemistry and Physics work in close collaboration with the Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi. The faculty members serve in National / International agencies like the Planning Commission, TWAD, Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency as members / consultants. GRI with the help of CAPART, has been instrumental in building the capacity of NGO s in the field of preparation of microplan using PRA and Logical frame work analysis. The Faculty members undertake projects sponsored by UGC, CSIR, Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission and other Governmental and Non Governmental agencies. The Faculty of Agriculture has linkage with FORD foundation New Delhi, ICAR, COMPAS ETC Foundation, Netherlands and State departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Agriculture Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Forestry. 42. Action taken report on the AQAR of the Previous year Quality enhancement, being a continuous process, is given top priority and efforts are constantly taken to enhance the quality of teachers and the calibre of the students. The initiatives taken in this regard have resulted in the convening of the meeting of the Board of Studies for the revision of curriculum and revisiting the rules under Choice Based Credit System. 43. Employers prefer to recruit graduates for their rural exposure and simplicity. Foreign students prefer to study at for its ample opportunities of experiential learning Location of GRI in a serene setting and salubrious climate offers an enabling atmosphere for learning All the students undergo a course in Gandhian Thought. Samaj Shilpi-a scheme for rural change agent has been implemented. Under this scheme interested students stay in nearby villages and take up social work in the evenings and on holidays.
