International Baccalaureate Program Vicki Sherwood, Principal Chris McQueen, IB Coordinator Amy Monaghan, IB Coordinator Northshore School District IB Office 15500 Simonds Road NE Kenmore, WA 98028 (425) 408-7355 Dear Prospective IB Candidate: We are pleased that you have expressed interest in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Inglemoor s program is one of the largest and most successful IB Diploma Programs in the Pacific Northwest. A big part of this success has to do with the type of student that comes to Inglemoor to do the IB. As you complete this statement of interest you should keep two questions in mind: what type of student are you and what type of student do you aspire to be? Do you like to ask questions and are you hungry for answers? Are you open-minded and able to look at things from different perspectives? Are you interested in the world and other cultures, places and experiences? Are you willing to work hard? Do you enjoy sharing ideas and listening to others? The answers to these questions will help you answer the question should I do the IB? The Inglemoor IB program is a place where students are encouraged to challenge themselves and where hard work and achievement are not only valued, but often can be considered fun. We believe that all young people should be encouraged to step up and do their best, whatever their interests. We try to provide IB courses that reflect the passions and talents of all learners. We have the standard academic classes for those students who excel in math, science, English, world languages and history. We also have courses for those that have interests in psychology, film study, art, philosophy and business. A majority of students at Inglemoor take some IB classes. Does this program appeal to you? If so, welcome to the IB! Please review the information in this packet with your parents and complete pages 5, 6 and 7. Many students have difficulty with the Four Year Plan. It can be somewhat scary to plan out your entire high school schedule so early. Fill out the plan as best you can and make a copy for your records. We understand that this plan will often change over time. Please note that the Statement of Interest is for the IB office only. It is not used to register students for classes. counselors will distribute 9 th grade Course Option Sheets in late November. At registration time, a counselor will be able to answer all of your questions. If you are a waiver student, you will have help from the counselors and the IB Coordinators at the time of registration. Waiver information can be found at www.nsd.org/waivers. We look forward to working with you! Sincerely, Chris McQueen International Baccalaureate Coordinators 2 Amy Monaghan

International Baccalaureate Program In January of 1997, received its charter from the International Baccalaureate Organization. The IB Program is a rigorous, internationally recognized course of study for college bound high school students seeking an international education. IB is designed to provide students with a foundation of in-depth learning in six subject areas. During the first years of high school, students are uniquely challenged to meet high standards in every class. Expectations include self-directed and disciplined study, research, critical analysis of information, and effective oral and written communication. 4-Year International Baccalaureate Program of Study Changes to course offerings may be made based on enrollment and other factors. Information about each course can be found under the specific department s course listings. Questions/Answers about IB Who can do the IB? The Northshore District s IB Diploma program at is open to all interested students. What is a Full IB Diploma Student? A Full Diploma Student is a student who studies six IB courses at the higher and standard level, completes an Extended Essay, completes the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and completes 150 hours of extracurricular Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) projects. The Diploma Program is a two-year program, which begins junior year. Is a student required to do the full IB Diploma? No. We encourage all interested students to consider the full IB Diploma because it is a challenging yet balanced program of education that prepares students for success at university and life beyond. However, this is not a requirement and many students enroll in one or more IB courses. How much does it cost? The full diploma fee is between $800-$900. Federal Funding is available to qualifying students to help defray exam costs. Can I get into the IB Program without having taken all the suggested 9 th and 10 th coursework? We make every effort to accommodate all interested students. Some students may be required to take additional courses during the summer in order to prepare for the full IB Program. Can I do the full IB Program and still have a life? Every student is different and each experience is unique. The success of an IB student is dependent on three factors: academic ability, personal motivation and disciplined study skills. Students that are strong in each of these three categories are able to balance IB, athletic, extra-curricular, family and social activities. Students that are strong in two of these three areas can do quite well and often learn to develop their strengths in other areas. Time management skills are critical. Will doing the IB help me get into college? Colleges and universities accept people, not resumes. Most selective four-year schools expect their applicants to take a challenging course of study and these schools recognize that the IB Diploma is one of the most rigorous high school programs in the world. College and university admissions offices know that the Inglemoor IB Program produces quality students that are well prepared for college. Are IB students required to take the IB examinations? Diploma students must take the exams. While we cannot require assessment fees for non-diploma students, we strongly encourage every IB student to participate in this aspect of the program. Testing supports our teachers, our school and honors the hard work of the greater Northshore community. Does a Diploma of the International Baccalaureate satisfy Washington State Graduation requirements? Yes! In April 2011, Washington State has joined four other states in recognizing the IB diploma. The IB diploma now automatically satisfies most if not all graduation requirements. What do these changes mean for Inglemoor IB Diploma students? In order to fulfill the state graduation requirements IB Diploma students will have to: Successfully complete all coursework in six IB classes in the proper combination of HL and SL subjects Successfully complete all Internal Assessment in each IB class and earn passing grades in all IB classes. Complete all IB Diploma Requirements; Extended Essay, CAS and Theory of Knowledge Register and complete all appropriate IB Exams. Pass all required Smarter Balanced and End of Course (EOC) exams Complete the High School and Beyond Plan The most significant change is that now a student will need to complete all IB Diploma requirements in order to receive a State of Washington diploma. If a student fails to complete all IB requirements, they may not graduate. For this reason we strongly encourage students to fill all traditional graduation requirements when possible. 4
