The Finance Sector Supplement to the Natural Capital Protocol Information for the Consultation The Finance Sector Supplement to the Natural Capital Protocol aims to provide financial institutions with guidance on how to incorporate environmental impacts and dependencies into their lending, investment and insurance practices. 1. Development The draft Finance Sector Supplement has been developed through a collaborative process which ran from October 2016 May 2017, and involved 249 people from 193 organizations (report here). The project has been guided by a steering group of industry experts, plus input and review from members of the Natural Capital Coalition Advisory Panel. The consultation that is now underway will allow a broader range of organizations to contribute to the Supplements development. We recognize that to produce a Supplement that is practical and fit-for-purpose, we need to gather the experience and expertise from across the finance sector and those that support it. 2. Consultation Objectives Provide an opportunity for a wide range of organizations and experts to contribute to the Supplement content and development. Gather input from: o o o Pilot testing program with financial institutions Public online consultation Workshops with stakeholder groups in different regions Build momentum and increase endorsement for integrating natural capital within finance sector decision-making. 3. Public online consultation: Collaborase The public online consultation will be run through an online consultation system called Collaborase. Collaborase facilitates transparency, allowing comments to stay visible to everyone and collected in one place, facilitating open engagement and dialogue. 1
If you do not already have access to Collaborase, please register here. When you register for the consultation, you will also receive the PDF of the Draft Finance Sector Supplement. We recommend using this PDF to help you review and navigate the Supplement, but request that you submit all comments through Collaborase. There are two ways to provide input through Collaborase: Provide comments: Collaborase includes the full text of the Supplement to which you can add comments at any level (word, line, section or overall) These can be classified as either technical, structure, style or overarching. Please provide comments for both the parts that you agree with, as well as constructive suggestions for improvement. Surveys: Each section of the Supplement has a corresponding survey that helps to consolidate feedback on some specific features. These can be found below each section heading. The complete list of questions included in these surveys is also included in the consultation pack. See the annex to this document for a Collaborase user guide. Please note that we can only accept comments and survey responses through the Collaborase platform and not via email. We do this to ensure that all comments are collected and addressed fairly. Participating in the Supplement consultation is on an individual basis (i.e. more than one person per organization may register). You can respond personally or on behalf of your organization. If you have run or been involved with a workshop, you may also provide aggregated comments see section 5 of this document. 4. Pilot testing We encourage financial institutions to test the draft Supplement within their organizations. Piloting offers the opportunity to directly inform and influence development, and to position your institution as a leader in integrated decisionmaking. More information about pilot testing is available here. 5. Workshops We will be running workshops over the consultation period to provide an opportunity to discuss the Supplement with others and encourage participation. We are also providing a standard slide deck, consultation questions and support for others who 2
may wish to run their own workshop. All publically available workshops will be promoted on the Coalition website. Please contact the Coalition at consultation@naturalcapitalcoalition.org if you would like to run a workshop. When uploading feedback from a workshop, please complete the Workshop Feedback question at the top of the Collaborase page see screenshot below. This will help us to gauge the extent of outreach. 6. Timeline The online consultation began on May 16 2017 and will continue until August 25 2017. We apologize that we cannot accept comments after this date. 3
