Few Historical Infos In Finally, Spring-Summer we shared the 2012 idea Sergio with some (De Rosa) colleagues and myself and thedecided Committee to organize was: an event focused on fluid-structure interaction problems. Elena Ciappi, CNR-INSEAN, Marine Technology Research Institute, We National involved Research Francesco Council (Franco) of Italy. and together we started to focus on Sergio the target. De Rosa and Francesco Franco, Department of Industrial Engineering Aerospace Section, Università di Napoli Federico II. Jean-Louis Guyader, Laboratoire Vibrations Acoustique, INSA-Lyon. Stephen A. Hambric, Center for Acoustics and Vibration, Pennsylvania State University. Randolph C.K. Leung, Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. 27-28 April 2017, Pennsylvania State University CAV, USA 1

The Concept There are many conferences dealing with flow induced vibrations, structural acoustics, etc. A completely different structure and organization. FLINOVIA should be (and hopefully will be) the opportunity to discuss and analyze scientific experiences. The presentations should be long-lasting talks enough to open potential dialogues or information exchanges among the scientists. The audience could have an important role in contributing significantly to the scientific discussion. No registration fees (no commercial interests): the event is fully supported by the institutions. 27-28 April 2017, Pennsylvania State University CAV, USA 2

A Good Beginning The first international symposium on Flow Induced Noise and Vibration Issues and Aspects was held in November 2013 over 3 days The first FLINOVIA was a great opportunity to gather together a in Rome, hosted by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). diverse group of international investigators of flow-induced vibrations and noise in an intimate setting, with a single continuous session. The opening lecture was given by William K. Blake. This workshop model allowed for intense discussion among all There were 16 contributors from Italy, France, Sweden, United participants, both during the presentations, and during breaks States of America, Canada, and China. and social events. The scientific content truly spanned most issues and aspects of flow Having received many positive feedback regarding the organization induced vibration and noise (innovative experimental techniques, and the structure of FLINOVIA, we decided to propose a second computational methods, reduced order models, etc.). edition (thanks to Steve and PSU) and hopefully, in the future, a third one More than 100 people including many PHD students and post-doc researchers, industry delegates, IT Navy etc. attended this first symposium edition. 27-28 April 2017, Pennsylvania State University CAV, USA 3

The Book No proceedings; the speakers are strongly invited to submit a paper to be collected successively in a research book. The Committee serves as Editorial Board. This second phase is important as the Symposium. The first issue was completed in June 2014 and was available on 24 November 2014: 16 chapters + a preface. All speakers and attendees received a free copy of the FLINOVIA Book. Up to date, there has been a total of 8770 chapter downloads (more than 500 downloads per chapter). The book was one of the top 50% downloaded ebooks in the relevant Springer Collection for 2015 and 2016. 27-28 April 2017, Pennsylvania State University CAV, USA 4
