CRITERIA-VII INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES 7.1. Environment consciousness 7.1.1. Does the institution conduct a Green Audit of its Campus? The students and faculty are encouraged by the NSS unit to keep the campus green by planting more tress and making the campus plastic free zone. Though there is no formal green audit system, the entire building of the institution is designed by the architect in considering the maximum utilization of the natural resources. All the class rooms are well lit with natural light and very well ventilated. 7.1.2. What are the initiatives taken by the institution to make the campus eco friendly? The following necessary steps are taken to keep the college campus environment friendly Energy conservation The glass windows of the class rooms facilitate the maximal utilization of natural light. The traditional lighting systems are replaced with CFL lighting system Switching off the electrical equipment when not in use In the hostel campus the elevators are switched off during the class hours which conserves energy to a greater extent. Minimizing use of elevator, and encouraging staff and students to use staircases whenever possible - Solar energy used in the students hostel, kitchen and other areas. Use of renewable energy Solar energy used in the hostel, kitchen and other areas. The college has bio-methanation reactor which is capable of producing 7 Kg of LPG from 100 kg of Kitchen waste. Water harvesting The college has adequate facilities to collect the rain water for the purpose of gardening. Efforts for carbon neutrality The college has made adequate arrangements for the parking of vehicles. Emission test certificates are mandatory for the vehicles in the campus. Cigarettes and tobacco products are strictly banned within 100 meters of the campus Students use college transportation facilities to go to the clinical areas, instead of using individual transportation. Plantation The college organizes periodical NSS camp to inculcate the values of plantation among the students and the faculties. E waste management Use of mobile phones in the campus is prohibited. Seminars and class teachings are given for the proper waste disposal. 174

Use of plastic bags are discouraged in the campus. Effluent treatment and recycling plant A well-equipped sewage water treatment plant is setup to treat waste water in the Institution.. Recognition / Certification for environment friendliness: The Karnataka Pollution Control Board periodically monitors and certifies the Institution regarding proper waste management process. 7.3.1. How does the institution ensure that robust infection control and radiation safety measures are effectively implemented on campus? Policies and practices are outlined for the robust infection control and radiation safety measures. The curriculum includes topics like infection control and prevention and biomedical waste management. 7.1.4. Has the institution has been audited / accredited by any other agency such as NABI, NABH etc? The institution is preparing for NABH certification. 7.2: INNOVATIONS 1. Enrichment and value added courses The college has introduced enrichment and value added courses to help the students to acquire the knowledge to provide quality care and to enhance their job opportunities. 2. Quality education The college conducts remedial classes for the needy students to perform better in the examination. Question banks are provide to the students. 3.Sports and cultural activities Students are encouraged to participate in indoor and outdoor games. A week in an academic year is exclusively given for cultural and sports programme to improve the students overall well being. 4. Conducive learning environment 175

Other than the use of black board in the class room teaching, teachers use LCD monitors, power point, Charts, Felt Boards, flannel Graphs, Flash cards to stimulate the interest in learning. 5. Feedback Mechanism Students give feedback regarding each teacher at the end of the academic year, which is one of the milestone in the growth of the institution. According to the students feedback the teacher is advised and counseled to make the necessary changes in their teaching. 6. Community participation Active community participation is fostered among the students and the faculties to promote, protect and preserve the health of the community. 7.3. BEST PRACTICES 7.3.1. Give details of any two best practices that have contributed to better academic and administrative functioning of the institution? BEST PRACTICE: 1 Evidence based practice and research utilization in the clinical areas OBJECTIVES: To provide evidence based data to deliver quality care based on best research To resolve problems in the clinical setting while practicing To achieve excellence in clinical setting/ patient care even more than the quality assurance standards To reduce variations in nursing care and assist with effective decision making To close the gap between the research and practice Evidence based practice become a core requirement of contemporary nursing practice Nursing has always used research to support the nursing practice. This is called research utilization. The faculty members use of appropriate search strategies and the selection of best data bases and the best research outcomes are utilized in the practice and teaching. THE PRACTICE: The faculty and the students use the five step process in their every day practice in the hospital: 1. Formulate a clinical question 2. Gathering the best evidence to answer the question 3. Critical appraisal of the best evidences 4.Integration of the evidence with the clinician's own expertise, assessment of the patient's condition, available healthcare resources, and the patient's preferences and values to implement a clinical decision; and 5. Evaluation of the practice change as a result of implementing the evidence. 176

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS: The quality of nursing care is improved the clinical setting. As well as the use of evidences increased the faculty and student s confidence adaptability, improved their skills, and critical thinking and decision making. PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED: In the clinical setting sometimes it is difficult to find time, access, and research expertise that are needed to search and analyse the evidence to find answers to their clinical questions. BEST PRACTICE: 2 Use of blog spot (social media) as teaching learning method. OBJECTIVES: To encourage the development of transferable, technical, and social skills of value in formal and informal learning. To discuss /share curriculum-related content and enhance the prescribed curriculum for students. To promote participatory culture among students - space that allows engagement, sharing, mentoring, and an opportunity for social interaction. To provide a virtual space for learners. To emphasize professional communication. To improve student comprehension To enhance student networking and collaboration with other nurses globally To use this technology beyond electronic medical records (EMR) and personal computer word processing programs To use the advanced technology in the teaching learning process. To make the teaching learning process more interesting. To get feedback from the students To post assignments, questions, readings, and grades as well as ways to interact with the students through forums or chats. Students are changing, and those once effective teaching methods are becoming stale. Faculty, and campus administrators, can utilize social media as a tool for creating new ways to engage students and demonstrates to them a variety of uses for the internet and their favorite sites. One of the biggest challenges in online education is the lack of interaction between students where as this blogs try to provide more opportunities for discussion and communication. This blogs supplement teaching and learning in traditional classroom environments as they can provide new opportunities for enriching existing curriculum through creative, authentic and/or flexible, nonlinear learning experiences. It provides space for participation, collaboration, distribution, dispersion of expertise, and relatedness. It helps in share and search for knowledge which contributes to informal learning. As nursing is the profession which invent innovative ideas, keeping this aspect in mind the oxford college of nursing has developed a blog named as oxfordnursing.blogspot.in. This method of teaching learning will help the student to compete with the world in this growing 177

world of technology. The student will learn to have maximum use of advanced technology in their learning phase. THE PRACTICE: In this blog the teachers post assignments, questions, college circulars, relevant articles, research and current knowledge and many more. The link will be sent to each student by e-mail from their respective class coordinators. The students visit the blog on a very regular basis; which encourage outside the classroom learning and students gives comment and feedback on the topic. EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS: The students frequently visits the blog and give there feedback as well as comments which help the teacher to modify their topics which has been updated in the blogs. PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED: Some students are not frequent users of internet, sometimes they fail to read the blog. BEST PRACTICE: 3 To inculcate the value of writing scientific papers and publishing it in Indexed Journals among faculty members of the college. OBJECTIVES Increase the number of research projects among the staff Increase the number of publications in indexed journals Encourage inter disciplinary/ multidisciplinary collaborative research efforts to introduce best practices in health care based on evidence. Writing and publishing research papers are an integral part of the professional life. This will not only help in obtaining knowledge and increasing the number of projects in hand but also it opens the way for best evidence based practice in the health care profession. THE PRATICE: The first part of the practice includes, encouraging the teachers to write the scientific papers. Then the written manuscripts are verified by the research and ethical committee. Once the manuscripts are ready, the ways are identified to get it published through various means. The papers are presented in the workshops, conferences and in national and international nursing journals. EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS: - The faculties are benefitted because of their professional growth. PROBLEM ENCOUNTERD - More qualified members are required in doing advanced researches - More budget provision is needed in certain studies - Less number of senior experienced faculty is another problem in conducting advanced research 178
