Friends Accept One Another Week 2 Friendship September 9-10, 2017 4 th -5 th OVERVIEW Bible Story: Accept one another Romans 15:7; Acts 9:26-28 (Supporting: Acts 9:1-25, 26:12-18) Bottom Line: Friends accept one another. Memory Verse: A friend loves at all times. They are there to help when trouble comes. Proverbs 17:17, NIrV Life App: Friendship using your words and actions to show others you care. BEFORE CLASS 1. Attend Huddle for prayer and announcements (30 min before service). 2. Review lesson and connect with other teachers. 3. Make sure stations and small groups are set up properly. Hangout Purpose: Create a welcoming, informal environment for students to engage with one another. First 5 minutes of service. Do any of these 3 activities during welcome time. 1. Welcome kids and families at the door for check-in 2. Survey environment to see if anyone is being left out. 3. Play games and activities with the kids. LARGE GROUP Purpose: Large group environment for learning about God s Word and worshipping God through music. 25-30 minutes. 1. Engage with the story and worship. Supervise students This week s story: Accept one another Romans 15:7; Acts 9:26-28 (Supporting: Acts 9:1-25, 26:12-18) SMALL GROUP Purpose: Small groups where the weekly lesson is unpacked and applied to daily life. 30 minutes Establish the GOAL for the day to talk about ACCEPTING OTHERS. 1. Best and Worst (Relational Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: None Directions: Have each person share their best and worst moments from the previous week. Since we are talking about friendships this month, probe about their best and worst moments when it comes to friends. This icebreaker is an easy one to use to give you good feedback concerning their life now. 2. Bible Story Extension (Bible Review Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: One chair or hot seat
Directions: Pass out the Bibles and encourage half the group to look up Acts 9 and the other half to look up Acts 26. Put the hot seat chair in the front and center. Let students take turns sitting in the hot seat and making a case for whether or not Saul should be part of the disciples (people who believe in and follow Jesus). Remind students to be respectful of whoever s in the hot seat, giving that person time and space to speak. o They can call out questions to ask of the person in the seat. o The person in the hot seat will then be challenged to respond to the questions, and they can refer back to the passages in Acts for help. Wrap Up and Ask: o How do you think Paul felt when Barnabas stood up for him and accepted him into the group of Jesus followers? o Have you ever had a friend explain your situation or make a case for you to be accepted into a group or with another person? What happened? How did you feel? 3. Bible Story Extension (Bible Review Activity 15 minutes) Supplies: Bibles, dice, sticky notes, pens or thin markers Directions: Ask kids to get in groups of 3. Pass out one Bible to each group. Pass out about 10 sticky notes and a pen/thin marker to each group. Tell them that they will create a chain of events based on what they read they can stop every few verses to write down one event on each post it or they can read the whole chapter and go back to summarize the events. Challenge them to figure out who s going to do what (but all kids will work together to interpret the passages): o 1 person to be the reader o 1 person to be the roller o 1 person to be the writer.
Ask the roller to roll the dice for their group. They will read a specific passage based on what they roll. o Roll 1 or 4: read John 13 o Roll 2 or 5: read John 21 o Roll 3 or 6: read John 18 Remind them to focus in on Jesus and Peter when they read their chapter. Ask the reader to read out loud. Everyone can help the writer figure out what to write on each sticky note. Pro Tip: If they seem confused, you could read a few verses out loud from one of the passages and help them come up with a few events to put on the notes. Remind them that if they forget something or want to change something, sticky notes can easily be moved or rearranged. Give them 10 minutes to read their chapters and write down their chains of events. Discuss as a group the chain of events the students came up with. EXPLAIN that Peter not admitting that he was Jesus friend and follower must have hurt Jesus even though He knew Peter would. But still Jesus forgives and trusts Peter to play a big role in sharing Jesus story with the world. Jesus knows that we re going to mess up, but He still forgives us and invites us to be part of what He s doing now. 2. Discussion Questions: (Discussion Activity 15 minutes) What are some things that are easy to forgive? What are some things that are harder to forgive? What do we worry will happen if we forgive people who have hurt us? Or what keeps us from forgiving our friends? How many times do you think you should forgive a friend? Is there a max? Does forgiveness mean everything goes back to the way it was before? What happens if we don t forgive? What do our friendships look and feel like if someone needs to forgive someone else but doesn t want to do it? Choose someone in your group to think of someone and then have them whisper it to you (The leader). Explain that the category is famous people you wish you were friends with. Explain that you want each student to brainstorm a worst day, but the worst day must be from their own experience or that of a close friend/family member (not a stranger or from a book/news/tv/movie). Give them a minute to think and let them brainstorm with a friend if they like. Encourage them to get in groups of four people and take turns sharing their worst days ever. After everyone shares (within the smaller groups), ask the groups to vote on which person in their group had the worst day. Then have all these winners share one more time to the whole group. o Pro Tip: If you have someone who is shy or new, give that kid the opportunity to share, but don t force him/her. If possible, enlist someone from that kid s group to share the story for him!) As a whole group, let students vote on how bad they think these days are with a double thumbs down (the worst), one thumb down (pretty bad), both thumbs sideway (not to bad really), or both thumbs up (pretty good day actually). Count the number of total thumbs downs each story gets and declare a winner. EXPLAIN that Having a bad day is pretty unavoidable it will happen to all of us at some point. When people show up to offer their support and show they really care, that can give us a real boost. If we want others to do this for us, shouldn t we look for chances to do that for others? STATIONS Purpose: Create a welcoming, informal environment for students to engage with one another. First 15 minutes of service. 1. Picture Frame Friend (Opening Activity Teacher Guided) Supplies: White paper, Pencils Directions: Give the kids a piece of paper and have them create a frame around the edge. Challenge them to draw a portrait of what they think a good friend looks like what would he or she be wearing? How is he or she standing? What kind of expression is on his or her face? Tell them to add words to describe them, even thought bubbles or things they d say. 2. Human Knot Supplies; None Directions: Get a group of kids to stand in a circle. Tell everyone to reach their right arm towards the center and grab someone else's hand. Make sure no one grabs the hand of the person right next to them. Have everyone reach their left arm in and grab someone else's hand. Again, make sure it's not the person right next to them. The kids need to work together to untangle the human knot without letting go of any hands. The goal is to end up in a perfect circle again.
