Autumn Newsletter 2016 Tuesday 4th October Visit from Wooden Spoon Wooden Spoon are a locally based charity, who donated money to the school to build the i-play area. On Tuesday 4th October, they are beginning a cycle journey across Sussex to visit the 15 projects they have helped during the last 10 years. We are delighted that we will be their first stop on this journey and look forward to welcoming them, to speak with the pupils and view the i-play as it looks now. We would like to thank them enormously for their very generous donation, which has provided much enjoyment to many pupils over the past years. Page 2

Reporting Absence It is important to keep the school informed every day that your child is going to be absent. Either call the school office on 01273 551028 or use the Studybugs app https://studybugs.com or the Studybugs web site Please contact the office if you need any help. Did you know that absence has a serious impact on GCSE results. Pupils missing on average 1/2 day a week of school (10%) are likely to drop at least one grade with each of their GCSE s. Attendance is important, for now and life beyond school. Please can we remind all parents/carers that we use Parent Mail to send lots of information out. May we ask that you regularly check your account so that you dont miss any important information. If you have a problem accessing your account you can go on the website below and click on the help for parents section. https://www.parentmail.co.uk/support/parent -support/ Page 3

CDP Federation Governors agreed to operate under a revised model from September 2016 and will have 9 core business meetings a year. These will all be Full Governing Body meetings focused on one of the Governing Body s 3 core functions as established in legislation being: 1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction ( S trategy ) 2. Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff ( Performance ) 3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent ( Finance ) In addition each Governor will have an allocated responsibility and will undertake monitoring activities reporting directly to the Governing Body at the appropriate meeting. These areas of responsibility will be confirmed after the first business meeting scheduled for 4th October. If you would like to contact the Governors please email the Clerk to Governors on teresacarter@cedarcentre.brighton-hove.sch.uk Page 6

Calling all budding musicians. This year music club is run by Mr. Hill and Mr. Carolan and will be every Monday in the music room. So far we have two keen students and have already started learning some brand new songs to possibly perform for you guys later this year. We are hoping to also start producing some electronic music at the club this year; so whatever music you are interested in doing we think we have it covered. Come and talk to us about joining the club! ICT club continues this academic year and remains on Wednesday evenings after school. Lots of games and fun for all! Come and join us! Sports Club is now on Tuesdays after school. Lots of fun and fitness for all. Page 7 Please note all after school clubs finish at 3.45pm

ELVIS After a long hot summer full of camping and swimming and playing in the long grass, our lovely Elvis was looking a bit bedraggled and matted. The only way round this was to give him a hair cut and start again! It was a bit of a shock for everyone when he turned up on Monday looking like a different dog. It took longer for the staff to get used to it than it did the pupils. But everyone thinks he is still gorgeous. We were a bit worried he might get cold in the winter without his big thick furry coat so we bought him a new jumper and added the school logo so now Elvis has his very own school uniform. What a smart boy! Page 8 PAGE 8

We took the nurture group for a walk to view the i360 and the ruins of the west pier. We stopped at the i-360 cafe and watched the i-360 working. Page 10
