Virtual Tutor Student Guide

Welcome to the Virtual Tutor! We are so pleased that you are joining us in our adventure into online learning. e2020 has created an inviting, interactive learning environment to help prepare you for success on your high school exit exams and college preparatory exams. With lessons designed not only to provide you with instructional content, but to show you how that content correlates to your real world, we hope that you will not only thrive with e2020, but flourish. The Virtual Tutor is the portal to your lessons; it is also where you can find progress reports, assignment calendars and other features designed to keep you informed and in control of your own education. This document is intended to help you become comfortable navigating the Virtual Tutor and guide you through everything you need to know to be happy and successful with your e2020 program, in your own time and at your own pace. Good luck! Breakdown of the e2020 Virtual Tutor Program Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 In almost all Virtual Tutor courses, you will take a diagnostic pre-test where each question is directly aligned to a particular exit exam or college preparatory exam objective. An individually customized course is created based how you answered the questions on the diagnostic pre-test. You will work through the Virtual Tutor course, participating in activities such as: Vocabulary, Video Lectures, Online Content, Journals, Labs (Math and Science only), Essays (Language Arts only) and Practice/Homework. At the end of each lesson, you will take an assessment to gauge how well you learned the content for a particular objective(s). In the event that you do not pass the end of lesson assessment, specifically in a math course, an additional supplemental learning lesson is automatically assigned to help you better understand the material. These landing slides are designed to let you know how well you performed on that particular activity. Page 9

Virtual Tutor Activities The Virtual Tutor has a variety of activities. While each course may vary slightly, the following is a list of possible activities for each lesson (Figure 1.07): Vocabulary Lectures Online Content Journal Writing Lab Lecture/Lab Assessment (Math and Science only) Writing (ewriting in Language Arts) Practice/Homework Quiz Figure 1.07 Page 10

Vocabulary Vocabulary is a great first step as you begin to build the foundation for your lesson (Figure 1.08). Figure 1.08 You are required to correctly type the vocabulary word. When typed correctly the word turns green. If there are any typing errors the word immediately turns red. Once you have accurately typed in the vocabulary word you will receive one or both of the following options: hear the definition read aloud and/or hear the word read aloud in a sentence. Click the green play button to hear the audio. Once you complete listening to the audio, click the Continue to Next Word button and repeat the above process until you have finished each of the vocabulary words. In cases where it is relevant, graphical representations of vocabulary words will also appear on screen in the Example section. You may click the drop-down arrow in the enotes title bar to expand your enotes and type in any information which you think may help you as you prepare to take your assessments later in the course. enotes are available in each activity you in which you will participate. Once you have completed typing each vocabulary word and listening to its definition or use in a sentence, click the green Exit button to move on to the next activity. Page 11

Lecture Videos Lecture videos are designed to engage and inform you on the topic at hand. Master teachers explore and explain the topic while a slideshow runs concurrently in the same window to give you a visual representation of what the teacher is discussing (Figure 1.09). You may pause, rewind and stop playback in order to take enotes or review at your own pace. When viewing a video lecture for the second time, you may also fast-forward so that you may review only that information which is critical to success on your assessments. Each click of the fast-forward button moves you approximately 16 seconds further into the lecture video. When you finish watching the lecture video, click the green Exit button. If you need to exit out of the lecture video before it is finished, you may click the Exit button while it is still red and it will save your place in the video. The next time you log into this course, you will pick up where you left off in the video instead of having to watch it over again from the beginning. Figure 1.09 Page 12

Online Content Online Content activities are designed to reinforce what you are learning in the lesson by utilizing both exceptional resources found on the Web and animated, interactive activities. You will click on the Online Content links to access relevant web pages and, in some instances, you will also answer questions that align to the information provided on those web pages (Figure 1.10). Once you ve completed either reading all of the Online Content web pages or reading them and then answering the related questions, click the green Submit/Complete button. Figure 1.10 Page 13

Journal Activities Journal activities bring home the real-world relevance of what you are learning in the Virtual Tutor. You will be given a writing prompt that relates to the topic at hand; this prompt will ask you to take the content you are learning and apply it to a situation that may happen in your day-to-day life (Figure 1.11). Type your answer into the Response section and then click the green Submit/Complete button. Figure 1.11 Page 14

Lab (Gizmo) Lecture (Math and Science Only) Gizmo Activities help you become more familiar with the content you are learning in a handson way. These practice activities are designed to assess your knowledge on the lesson and enable you to understand what you do know, and what you need to review before attempting an assessment (Figure 1.16). Practice/Homework assignments are comprised of questions that vary from multiple choice to True/False to short answer. While you are working on the activity, if you have difficulty with a particular question you may have access to a Show Me button which, when clicked, will open a separate browser window and show a master teacher explaining how to solve the problem. These Show Me resources are a terrific way for you to discover why you got a question wrong, so that you may be better prepared for your assessment. Once you ve answered all of the Practice/Homework questions, you ll click the Check Answers button. You ll immediately be able to see which questions you answered correctly and for the ones where your answer was not correct, you ll see what the correct answer is. Any questions that asked you to write a short answer will show you an e2020 suggested answer when you click on the Check Answers button. 1. Answer each question by either clicking the appropriate radio button or typing in a response. 2. Click Check Answers after you ve answered all the questions. 3. Scroll through the activity to see which questions you answered correctly/incorrectly. 4. Click the Show Me button, if available, for further explanation on how to answer a particular question. 5. Click Exit when finished. Figure 1.16 Page 18

Answer all quiz questions. You can navigate through the questions in several ways: a. Click the Next Question button to proceed to the next question. b. Click the Prev/Next buttons to move one question backward or forward. c. Click the numbered bubbles in the Question List to go to a specific question. d. Click the red flag button to mark that specific question as a reminder to return to it later. 2. You may keep track of how much time you have to complete the assessment by referencing the Time Remaining countdown clock in the upper-right portion of the screen. By default, you will have an hour, unless your teacher has changed the amount of time for you to complete the activity. 3. You can see how many questions there are in the assessment and what question you are on in the Question/Out Of section in the upper-left corner of the Progress section. 4. Click the Exit and Submit button when you have answered all of the assessment questions. Figure 1.17 Page 19
