English as a Second Language (ESL) 1 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) Program Description This series of courses is designed to aid the resident and international student, for whom English is a second or foreign language, to master basic communication skills necessary to make reasonable progress in an American community college environment. Students do not need to take the TOEFL and can enroll in regular college courses after studying English. This program offers courses for beginning to advanced students. For more information on the department, visit http://www.sbcc.edu/esl/ Program Student Learning Outcomes 1. Listen to spoken English, understand intended meaning and respond appropriately. 2. Speak in English on a diversity of topics in a way that is intelligible to the listener. 3. Read, comprehend and apply one s own thinking to a wide range of English texts. 4. Write both narrative and expository papers which fit the intended purpose and audience. 5. Increase both receptive and productive knowledge of English vocabulary. 6. Use appropriate and generally correct grammar, spelling and punctuation when communicating in English. 7. Analyze new information and ideas and contribute original thought to discussions regarding these. 8. Use word-processing programs, language learning software, the Internet and keyboarding skills to facilitate language development. Assessment/Advisement All new students take an assessment test which places them in the courses appropriate to their abilities. Proof of Completion Students who successfully complete Level 5 Reading and Writing will be awarded a document stating that they have completed the ESL Program at SBCC. Students may also earn this proof of completion by successfully finishing at least one four-unit ESL course and passing the college s English assessment test. ESL 035 Levels 1-2: Basic Conversation (1 Unit) Designed for beginning ESL students who wish to develop survival speaking and listening skills, including the use of appropriate pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Emphasis is on English for daily life. ESL 040 Grammar Level 1 (4 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC placement Provides the beginner with the foundation of English grammar and enables the student to function at least minimally (both orally and in writing) in common English language situations. ESL 041 Writing Level 1 (4 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed for the beginning-level student, course provides a foundation of English writing and the ability to function at least minimally in common English writing situations for academic, work and personal purposes.

ESL 043 Foundations 1: Listening, Speaking and Grammar (6 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC placement Integrated course designed to provide beginning students with a foundation of English, especially in speaking, listening and basic grammar. Includes vocabulary, reading and writing work as well. ESL 044 Foundations 1: Reading, Writing and Grammar (6 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC Placement Exam. Integrated course designed to provide the beginning level student with a foundation of English reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and study skills. ESL 050 Grammar Level 2 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 40 or ESL 43 or qualifying score on SBCC placement Provides the intermediate-level student with a continuation of the foundation of English grammar and enables the student to function at an intermediate level (both orally and in writing) in common English language situations. ESL 051 Writing Level 2 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 044 or qualifying score on SBCC placement exam or ESL 041. Designed for the high beginning-level student, course provides a foundation of English writing and the ability to function at a highbeginning level in common English writing situations for academic, work and personal purposes. ESL 052 Reading Level 2 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 42 or better or ESL 44 or better or qualifying score on SBCC placement Prerequisites: ESL 42 or better or ESL 44 or better or qualifying score on SBCC placement Provides the intermediate-level student with a basic foundation in phonetic word attack skills, vocabulary development, comprehension skills and basic study skills. ESL 053 Foundations 2: Listening, Speaking and Grammar (6 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 43 or ESL 40 or qualifying score on SBCC placement Provides high beginning to low intermediate students with a foundation of English, especially in speaking and listening. ESL 096 Introduction to Early Childhood Education for High-Beginning/ Low-Intermediate ESL (3 Units) Hours: 54 (54 lecture) Designed for high-beginning to low-intermediate English as a Second Language students who are interested in a career in early childhood education. Emphasis is on linguistic development in the specific context of early childhood education to help students develop the language skills necessary for success in ESL 97. ESL 097 Introduction to Early Childhood Education for Intermediate ESL (3 Units) Hours: 54 (54 lecture) Designed for intermediate English as a Second Language students who are interested in a career in early childhood education. Emphasis is on linguistic development in the specific context of early childhood education to help students develop the language skills necessary for success in ESL 98.

English as a Second Language (ESL) 3 ESL 098 Introduction To Early Childhood Education for High-Intermediate to Advanced ESL (3 Units) Hours: 54 (54 lecture) Designed for high intermediate to advanced English as a Second Language students who are interested in a career in early childhood education. Emphasis is on linguistic development in the specific context of early childhood education to help students develop the language skills necessary for success in ECE 100. ESL 107 Intermediate Grammar Review (1 Unit) Prerequisites: ESL 60. Designed for the intermediate to advanced student who has some knowledge of English verb tenses, but who requires additional review and practice. Provides a brief review of verb tenses with individualized extensive practice online. ESL 113 Beginning Conversation Level 1 (4 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed to acquaint beginning-level students with the basics of survival English to enable them to function at least minimally in common Englishspeaking situations. ESL 117 Intermediate Conversation Level 2 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 113 or ESL 43 or qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed to provide the student with intermediate-level verbal and listening skills. ESL 121 Level 3: Intermediate Conversation (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 117 or better or qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed to provide the students with intermediate-level verbal and listening skills. ESL 122 Grammar Level 4 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 60 or better or qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed to provide the advanced student with natural language activities which utilize the target grammar. Multiple examples and the use of a variety of materials facilitate students' deductive learning processes. ESL 123 Writing Level 4 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 61 or qualifying score on SBCC placement exam, or ESL 064. Transferable offering designed to take students from paragraph writing to development of the essay as well as to more effective personal and workrelated written communication., UC Transferable UC Transfer Limit: ESL courses combined: maximum credit, 8 units; ESL 123 and 132 combined: maximum credit, one course. ESL 124 Reading Level 4 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 62 or qualifying score on SBCC placement For the advanced student with demonstrated knowledge and experience in contextualized English grammar and writing. Designed to review and refine grammar for application in advanced writing projects to enable the student to successfully transition into non-esl course work. Introduction to basic computer and word processing skills necessary for academic work. ESL 125 Advanced Conversation Level 4 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 121 or qualifying score on SBCC placement Provides student with advanced ESL verbal and listening skills, as well as skills development in individual speech delivery and criticism. ESL 126 Level 1-5: Reading And Writing Workshop (2 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed as a short two-unit course. The focus is to help students develop reading and writing skills appropriate to the various levels of the program. The class can be offered as a face to face course or hybrid online. ESL 128 Conversation Workshop Level 1-5 (2 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed to provide the ESL student with verbal and listening skills and development of oral language ability. ESL 129 Bilingual Conversation Exchange (2 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 43 and ESL 44. Course Advisories: SPAN 101 or ESL 40 and ESL 41 and ESL 42. Interactive course for ESL and Spanish students to build conversation skills and foster cultural understanding. ESL 130 Reading Level 5 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 124 or qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed to provide the advanced ESL reader with reading comprehension skills, study skills and vocabulary development. Strongly emphasizes skill development for mainstreaming students into the general college curriculum. ESL 131 Grammar Level 5 (4 Units) Prerequisites: ESL 122 or better or 132 or qualifying score on SBCC placement Advanced grammar designed to teach sentence-level grammar, as well as a review of tense system and parts of speech.

Emphasizes critical thinking, with focus on building a portfolio of essays. Includes review of sentence structure and parts of speech., UC Transferable UC Transfer Limit: ESL courses combined; maximum credit, 8 units; ESL 123 and 132 combined: maximum credit, one course. ESL 133 Listening and Speaking Skills for College (4 Units) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on SBCC placement Course Advisories: ESL 62 or ESL 63 or Qualifying score on SBCC placement Designed to develop the listening and speaking skills necessary for success in the college environment. Emphasis on listening comprehension strategies, effective note-taking from lectures and oral communication, and presentation skills at a high intermediate to advanced level. Emphasizes critical thinking skills, with focus on writing expository essays, including argumentation. ESL 136A Academic English: Grammar and Editing A (1 Unit) Designed for the advanced non-native speaker of English who requires additional review and practice to improve accuracy and fluency writing. To support students in college courses, instruction will focus on common student errors at the sentence level. ESL 136B Academic English: Grammar and Editing B (1 Unit) Grammar, editing and proofreading practice for advanced ESL writers: Review and clarification of troublesome grammar points, and practice in writing, editing, and proofreading. ESL 137A Academic English: Editing Skills A (1 Unit) Hours: 16 (16 lecture) Grammar and editing practice for advanced non-native speakers of English. Further review and clarification of common sentence-level errors for accuracy and fluency in college writing. ESL 136A/136B/137A/137B are not sequential and can be taken in any order. ESL 137B Academic English: Editing Skills B (1 Unit) Hours: 16 (16 lecture) Designed for advanced non-native speakers of English, this course focuses on identifying and correcting common writing errors. For students in ESL, English Skills, English and other college courses. ESL 290 Work Experience In English As A Second Language (1-4 Units) Hours: 300 (300 lab) Individual student meetings with instructor to be scheduled; time and day T.B.A. Laboratory hours are work experience and are individual for each student. Consists of supervised employment for students who are employed on or off campus. Course restricted to 3 Noncredit Courses English as a Second Language (noncredit) ESL NC000 Introduction to ESL (0 Units) Students learn to identify symbols in their lives including, but not limited to letters, numbers, time, direction, money, calendar, schedules and appointments. Students listen, speak, read and write in English at a pace determined by their own abilities and progress. Students increase confidence in classroom skills such as responding to teacher's questions, asking for help and working in pairs and groups. Course restricted to 98 ESL NC005 Pronunciation and Speaking Skills: Beginning ESL (0 Units) Hours: 25 (25 lecture) Students practice beginning level speaking skills related to daily life situations and tasks. Students learn pronunciation basics for English language proficiency and gain confidence in appropriate and clear verbal interaction for community and classroom. Topics include personal information, family, jobs, school, and daily life. Course restricted to 98 ESL NC006 Pronunciation and Conversation: Beyond ESL Basics (0 Units) Hours: 25 (25 lecture) Students practice clear pronunciation of American English at a beginning high or intermediate low level. Students gain confidence in communication skills to increase work opportunities and community involvement. Students increase comprehensibility to help with daily verbal interaction in the community and classroom. Language topics include intonation, rhythm, stress, and letter sounds in English. Course restricted to 98 ESL NC007 Pronunciation and Conversation: Intermediate ESL (0 Units) Students learn to recognize and produce clear pronunciation of standard American English for intermediate students. Instruction focuses on sound mechanics, correct verb tense endings, intonation, rhythm, and stress. Students increase vocabulary and fluency to gain confidence in clear verbal interaction. English as a Second Language (ESL) 5 ESL NC008 ESL Intermediate Low Grammar (0 Units) Intermediate low ESL students will use an integrated skills approach that includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a variety of contexts to increase confidence when communicating in English. Students learn English grammar and usage and focus on grammatical concepts in spoken/written English. Topics include modals, irregular past tense verbs, tag questions, commands, count and non-count nouns, and parts of speech. Students identify and use grammatical elements to compose and communicate using a variety of sentence styles, patterns, and tenses.
