Create Your Own Dystopia Essay Guidelines Imagine you have the power to create a brand new society dystopian or utopian. What would it be like? What would be its guiding principles? Your task is to create an original, creative society based on a researched form on government. You will write an informational essay describing your society, broken down into sections with appropriate headings and other informational text features. Even though your society is invented, you will be writing in the informational mode as if it were real, showing your ability to use informational text features, and appropriate details, examples, and explanation. Your society should also be research-based, and it should be clear what real type of government your society is based on. Project Requirements: Informational Essay Introduction In your introduction, you will draw the reader into your essay, give background information about, and write a thesis based on a motto that exemplifies the foundations of your society. Body Paragraphs Using logical organization and headings, describe your society and how its elements and government fits exemplifies the motto. Consider giving information on: government structure, setting, important figures, laws, economy, environment, education, classes, culture, problems, etc. Conclusion Develop a satisfying conclusion that summarizes the essay and restates the thesis. Graphics You will need to include two appropriate informational graphics about your society in your essay: map, chart, graph, illustration, diagram, etc. Propaganda Piece You will create a piece of persuasive propaganda that promotes your society or encourages conformation to the society s norms. It may be a poster, brochure, video, etc. Your final grade will be calculated according to a rubric.

Brainstorming Directions: Before you imagine the specifics of your own dystopian or society, use the web below to brainstorm potential ideas, situations, and problems for your society. Brainstorm as many as possible; you do not have to use these ideas in your project. Type of Government: Setting Economy Education My Dystopian Or Utopian Society (Circle one) Government Problems/ Challenges Culture

What events led to this society being created? 2. Create a motto for your society. For example, in Adolus Huxley s novel Brave New World, the society s slogan is Community. Stability. Identity. In George Orwell s 1984, the motto is War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength. 3. How does your above motto describe your society? Why did you pick those particular words?

4. Describe the setting of your society. Where in the world is it located? What does the city physically look like? Is it modern, or old fashioned? 5. What kind of people are valued in your society?
