Table of Contents Date Title Page # 3/14 Bee article 3 There are 2 pages.

Go through and number every line. Don t skip any lines. Should have 54 lines.

Read silently to yourself. Annotate as you do that. You need a minimum of 10 annotation marks on your paper.

Quick write Answer in Box 1 (complete sentences) In your own words, what (not why) is going on with the bees? Cite the lines from the text that help you to answer this question.

Listen as I read Listen as I read the article to you. This time, try to pick out at least 1 thing that you hadn t noticed the first time or that you think is a really important fact from this article.

Box 2 Please answer in complete sentences This is individual (on your own) What type of relationship do bees and plants have? How do you know this? (make sure to also cite the lines from the text that help you to answer this question). You may also use your notes.

Tuesday, March 15 Write the date & question: 3/15: Why is a predator/prey relationship not a symbiotic relationship?

How do organisms coexist and rely on one another? Objectives of the day... -Identify risks to biological systems -Cite evidence when making claims -Compare symbiotic relationships Mission: We will be incredible science students.

Box 2 Please answer in complete sentences This is individual (on your own) What type of relationship do bees and plants have? How do you know this? (make sure to also cite the lines from the text that help you to answer this question). You may also use your notes.

Discuss answers with your teammates and be ready to share evidence that helped you to answer this What type of relationship do bees and plants have? How do you know this? (make sure to also cite the lines from the text that help you to answer this question). You may also use your notes.

For this next question, you will use either article A or article B. Please do not write on the papers. Read your article quietly to yourself.

Using whiteboards Be careful carrying these (don t hold them up over your heads) Only use the markers for the writing you are asked to do EVERYONE takes turns writing today. Start with A, then rotate to B, C, D for next questions Make sure board is erased when you return it Put marker and towel back where you got them While other groups are sharing, you are not writing on your board (unless directed to do so)

Box 3 Please answer in complete sentences Write your answer in Box 3 and then write it out on your whiteboard There are several hypotheses about what could be some causes of colony collapse disorder (CCD). Explain what 2 of those ideas are. Cite the evidence in your answer (cite the lines of text and tell whether article A or B).

Box 4 There are several hypotheses about what could be some causes of colony collapse disorder (CCD). Explain what 3 of those ideas are. Cite the evidence in your answer (cite the lines of text and tell whether article A or B). Review the answers provided by the others groups. Write down 2 things that you see in those responses that you did not have as part of your group s response. This should go into Box 4.

Box 5 Discuss answers with your teammates and write 1 thorough & complete answer On lines 11 & 12 of the article "Worldwide Loss of Bees a Growing Concern" it states that the massive honeybee disappearance is the "biggest general threat to our food supply." Do you agree or disagree? What evidence is there to back up that claim?

Write 1 statement that you agree with and tell why or 1 statement that you disagree with and tell why.

Box 7: Pretend that you are a bee. Write a short message (140 characters max) that you would put on a billboard to let the world know why you are important and why they should be concerned about colony collapse disorder (CCD).

Box 7 Write down your own billboard message. Listen to your classmates and write down at least 1 of their messages also.

Yesterday you wrote your prediction about what this article would be about. Now, on the back of your index card rate your prediction on a scale of 1-10 (10 the most accurate) as to how accurate it was. Then, justify that score. What parts were correct and what parts were incorrect?

What adaptations do organisms have that help them survive? Objective of the day... -Describe how physical factors allow for the survival of organisms Mission: We will be incredible science students.

All organisms have characteristics that allow them to survive in their environment. An adaptation is any inherited characteristic that increases the chance of an organism s surviving and producing offspring that also reproduce. An adaptation may have to do with the way an organism gets its energy or processes materials. An adaptation may relate to the shape or structure of an organism s body. An adaption can even be a form of behavior.

When most multicellular organisms reproduce, the offspring are not exact copies of the parents. There are differences. If a particular difference gives an organism an advantage over other members in its group, then that difference is referred to as an adaptation. Over time, the organism and its offspring do better and reproduce more. That trait then becomes more common in the population.

The diversity of life on Earth is due to the wide range of adaptations that have occurred in different species.

What are some adaptations that allow plants to survive on land?

How are grasses able to survive in a lot of different conditions? They have deep roots, produce seeds quickly

What are some adaptations that plants have that protect them? Odors to keep insects away, poison or chemicals

What adaptations does a Venus flytrap have and why? Grows in soil that lacks a lot of nutrients, so it can trap and digest insects to get the materials that it needs

What are some seasonal changes that can affect animals? Less food, changing temperatures, different amounts of precipitation (flooding, drought), different amounts of sunlight

What does migration mean and how does that help animals to survive? What are some examples? It is the movement of animals to different regions in response to changes in the environment. Helps them to maintain food source.

How does hibernation help an animal to survive? This is an example of going dormant. It conserves energy.

Explain what seeds and pollen are and why they are adaptations that make it possible for plants to reproduce on land. Seed young plant enclosed in coating. Protects it and it can be moved to different areas. Pollen holds sperm cells. Can be transported to other plants for fertilization.

How does a lateral line help a fish? Senses objects and organisms and movements nearby. This helps to avoid predators.

How is the reptile egg an adaptation that allows vertebrates to live on land? Hard shell protects it. There is a membrane that holds in contents and keeps it moist so it doesn t dry out.

How are geckos adapted to be able to walk on very smooth surfaces? Its foot is covered with billions of tiny hairs. Each hair branches into smaller hairs called spatulae. The atoms of the spatulae are attracted to the atoms of the surface so they can walk on it and stick to it.

Describe the bone structure of birds and how that helps them. Bones are hollow so they weigh less which aids in flight.

Where did the first mammals live in water or on land? Land

Mythical Island Adaptations See directions on assignment sheet
