Our offer The Careers Service at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf In collaboration with the Düsseldorf Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf offers a careers service for students and companies. This is part of a newly-established and greatly augmented advisory service for students. Local companies also profit from this expansion of the Student Service Centre. The careers service allows companies situated in the region to get to know those young academics studying at the five faculties at Heinrich Heine University. In addition to the focus on research and teaching in the life and natural sciences, the economic sciences and law also represent an innovative field of increasing importance for the future of Düsseldorf and surroundings. The excellent standard and range of teaching offered in the arts, social and cultural sciences enable students to acquire universally-applicable analytical and methodological skills. With more than 17,000 students, companies encounter a wide range of backgrounds and qualification profiles, such as: students who have gained initial practical work experience in internships or through qualified part-time work students who have completed some kind of vocational training before studying international students from Europe and further afield students who have spent some time studying or working abroad graduates with a second degree or completed Master s degree doctoral students 4

During events which form part of our recruiting concept, companies can get to know these students and graduates, to discuss their potential and suitability. Furthermore companies can get in contact with the academic staff at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf as part of the Master meetings. In these exclusive settings, companies can gain insight into the graduates professional and social competencies. On the other hand, the companies have an opportunity to discuss their current needs and qualification requirements with the academic staff. This mutual transparency with regard to qualification requirements and how these qualifications should best be acquired, is at the core of the Master meetings. Each academic year more than 2,100 students graduate from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. The careers service sees itself as supporting companies and other potential employers in establishing contact with tomorrow s potential employees at an early stage. Come and talk to us! We are happy to advise you on which of our offers can benefit your company most and to develop individual recruiting concepts to meet your needs. We are interested in your suggestions as to how we can extend and improve on our services. University executive staff and the careers service at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf would be pleased to discuss and help you plan new ways of recruiting young professionals. 5Our offer

Recruitment concept Recruiting young professionals at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf The careers service at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf supports companies in finding students and graduates of our university to fill your vacancies for internships and career entry positions. We offer opportunities to approach students and graduates and present your company as a potential employer. Costs Unless specifically stated otherwise, all services offered by the careers service are free of charge for companies. Costs may be incurred however for advertising and catering. Promoting the events All corporate events are promoted professionally and in a timely manner by: posting information on the careers service websites where interested parties can then register entering the event into the event databank personally informing target institutions, academic counsellors and student representatives (e.g. using info mails) displaying posters on campus (on request) Planning of the events 6 The careers service requires some lead time when organising events. Therefore, all events intended for a winter semester (from mid October to early February) should be planned with the career service before 15 June, and all events for a summer semester (from mid April to the end of July) before 15 December. The careers service will inform the company of the number of registered participants two weeks before the event.

Types of event 1. Corporate presentations Corporate presentations on the university campus offer companies an opportunity to get ahead of their competitors by actively approaching qualified young academics. This enables companies to present their opportunities for direct entry positions, trainee programmes and offers for final theses to graduates and doctoral students, portraying themselves as an attractive employer. You come to us 2. Guest lectures Practical experience now! From daily experience companies know which aspects of their core business are going to become increasingly important in future. With the assistance of the careers service they can sensitize students for such issues early on, and show them possible ways of transferring their acquired knowledge into actual practice. In a guest lecture companies can attract students interest and stimulate interesting and practice-oriented discussions. Dates for presentations and guest lectures: generally Tuesdays at 1pm or 5pm Duration: variable, normally two full hours, including discussion and an opportunity to ask questions No. of participants: generally at least ten, although this may be amended on request Location: a suitable lecture hall or seminar room on campus. If required, both technical equipment / presentation materials and catering can be organised. 7

You come to us 3. Workshops In half- or full-day workshops companies can offer students, graduates and doctoral students careers advice, and assist them in job hunting and with applications. Participating companies can thereby call attention to and present themselves as a competent partner with regard to career matters. During the workshops they will also have opportunities to get to know the participants in different situations and possibly identify future employees to meet their own requirements. The topic for the 1st workshop is freely selectable. For workshops two to four, three fixed topics are suggested: Workshop 1 The content of this workshop could include skills, knowledge and abilities a young employee should ideally have on starting a job, e.g. negotiating skills and intercultural codes of conduct. Workshop 2 Don t be afraid of assessment centres! Training elements: self-presentation, group exercises, business simulations Workshop 3 Choice of occupational fields for students, graduates and doctoral students from all courses of study Workshop 4 Job application training: from writing a CV to the interview Dates: generally Tuesdays, Fridays or Saturdays (both during the semesters and in the semester breaks) Duration of the event: half-day workshop: 9am to 1pm or 1pm to 5pm full-day workshop: 10am to 4 or 5pm No. of participants: generally at least ten, although this may be amended on request 8 Location: a suitable lecture hall or seminar room on campus. If required, both technical equipment / presentation materials and catering can be organised.

4. Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf s Campus fair At the annual campus fair companies can talk to students and graduates, and establish contacts with university staff. The campus fair is the result of collaboration between Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, involving the participation of numerous local companies. The campus fair consists of two separate days: Recruitment Day for students and graduates and University Information Day for school pupils thinking about studying. On Recruitment Day (Wednesday), companies present themselves at stands, giving information to students, graduates and doctoral students on employment prospects in their company and talking to potential young professionals. On University Information Day Studying in Düsseldorf (Saturday), school pupils can come and learn something about studying in Düsseldorf. This day is organised as a series of lectures without information stands for companies. The participating companies have an opportunity to outline prospects open later to students and graduates such as internships, offers for final theses, trainee programmes, and jobs to young people who are about to complete their secondary education. You can find further information and current dates at www.campusmesse-duesseldorf.de 5. Career Lunch / Career Dinner On request, the careers service can organise a Career Lunch or Career Dinner (including suggesting a suitable restaurant) where companies can meet a select group of students, graduates or doctoral students. Costs The company will be expected to bear the costs of such a Career Lunch / Career Dinner. 9You come to us

We come to you 6. Company visits On the premises of... Interested companies can also choose to present themselves to young academics by opening their doors and inviting them in to take a tour of the company. Dates by arrangement in the first half of either the summer (April to May) or the winter semester (October to November). No. of participants generally at least ten, although this may be amended on request 7. (Compulsory) internships (Compulsory) internships present a good opportunity to get to know students better and to test their suitability for a later career path in your company. The careers service is glad to help companies arrange and organise such programmes. The careers service can also assist you in contacting those faculties and courses of study most relevant to your needs, and in finding the most appropriate university-internal contact persons. 8. Dialogue partners The Master meeting Master meetings are occasions where companies can engage in dialogue with academic staff and the representatives for the Master s programmes. Company representatives, therefore, are able to obtain first-hand information about the specialist and methodological contents of the Master s study programmes, including the resulting qualifications, skills and abilities of the Master graduates. Conversely, the company representatives can set forth those specialist and social skills relevant to their company, thereby enabling Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf to better prepare its Master graduates for future business needs. The Master meetings are always reserved for just one company, which is then the exclusive dialogue partner of Heinrich Heine University for that particular meeting. The meetings are free of charge for companies, although costs may be incurred for catering, if required. The Master meetings offer a good starting point for further collaborative projects between companies and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. Planning and registration The Master meetings take place on request of companies or Heinrich Heine University s representatives for the Master s study programmes. The best way to request such a meeting is to use the appropriate form available on the websites to contact Heinrich Heine University s careers service. Companies can name particular courses of study or faculties as partners for the Master meeting. University representatives for the Master s study programmes can indicate preferred business sectors in which the participating company should operate. 12 At the latest two weeks before the Master meeting, all participants are requested to have confirmed their attendance.

How the careers service can help organise and hold a Master meeting After settling on the dialogue partners, the careers service will identify the respective contact persons in the relevant business sectors or study programmes and approach them. The careers service will then explain the concept of a Master meeting, and clarify whether all sides are interested and willing to participate. Finally, a date and time is agreed upon. Master meetings Dates Tuesdays 1 to 5pm is suggested. Other times are possible by prior agreement with the careers service. The target date is coordinated with both sides in advance. Preparation of the event takes around 10 to 12 weeks after enquiry. Participants The Master meetings are always limited to one company at a time, which is then the exclusive dialogue partner of Heinrich Heine University. The event is ideal for personnel managers and senior HR staff. There is no restriction on the number of university representatives for the Master s study programmes who may attend such a meeting, so that similar requests from more than one can be considered. Location a suitable lecture hall or seminar room on the campus of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. Additional services If required, both technical equipment / presentation materials and catering can be organised. 13

Dialogue partners Example of a Master meeting The following example should give you an idea of how such an event could be planned. Alternatives are of course possible in consultation with the careers service. 1 to 1.15 pm Welcome and introduction of participants by the careers service 1.15 to 1.45 pm Corporate presentation: demands made of employees in company A 1.50 to 2.50 pm Presentation by university representative(s) for the Master s study programme(s): structure, contents and skills acquired in Master s study programme X 2.50 to 3 pm Break from 3 pm around 5 pm Discussion: comparison between expectations and reality; critical comments Summary of findings, and where appropriate agreement on how to proceed; leave-taking 14
