Statistics, especially Data Analysis Operational Environment Associate Professor in Statistics (Data Analysis) is a position in the field of statistics in the Degree Programme in Mathematics and Statistics at the School of Information Sciences (SIS) of the University of Tampere. SIS is one of the nine newly founded schools at the University of Tampere. (For more information about the University's reorganisation, please visit www.uta.fi/english/introduction/strategy/index) SIS offers Bachelor's, Master's, Licentiate and Doctoral degrees in science. The fields represented at SIS include a wide selection of disciplines concerned with the processing, management and use of information and data. SIS offers instruction in the following fields: Information Studies and Interactive Media, Mathematics, Statistics, Interactive Technology, and Computer Science. SIS is now setting up a new English-language Master's degree programme in Data Analysis that combines data analysis methods from statistics and computer science. The successful candidate for the associate professorship in statistics will have a central role in planning this Master's degree programme and will mainly teach courses that are part of or contribute to this degree programme. SIS has three interdisciplinary research centres: CIS, TAUCHI and TRIM. Statistical research falls within the realm of CIS, the Research Center for Information and Systems (www.uta.fi/sis/cis/), which hosts several research groups. For this post, relevant research groups include DARG (data analysis and data mining), MESSI (e.g. information systems) and NGIS (database management and information retrieval). Eligible applicants must demonstrate sufficient proof of interest in data-driven statistical research connected with fields important to SIS and the University of Tampere. The successful candidate is expected to found a data analysis research group which practices high-quality interdisciplinary research and takes advantage of the School's strengths. For example, research into data mining and visualisation, data 1

integration and business data management intersects with research on statistical data analysis. For more information about the School of Information Sciences and the field of statistics, please visit www.uta.fi/sis/. Eligibility The title of associate professor may be used when the principles of career advancement described in the Human Resources Policy or the tenure track system are applied on appointment (see section 6 of the University of Tampere's Regulations on Human Resources). According to section 4 of the University's Regulations on Human Resources, a person appointed to a post at the University must have the educational background, experience and language skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the post in question, as well as the cooperative and interpersonal skills required for those duties. Studies in university pedagogy or other pedagogical teaching qualifications and teaching experience are taken into account when appointing an associate professor. The person appointed associate professor must hold an appropriate doctoral degree, high-level academic qualifications and experience in directing scientific research, be able to provide high-quality, research-based instruction as well as to have a track record of international scientific activities. When assessing applicants' qualifications, their success in finding research funding, qualifications in postgraduate education and national and international honorary positions or positions of trust will also be considered. From the point of view of the associate professor s tasks it is essential that the applicant is fluent in English. For more information on the evaluation criteria of Tenure Track System at the School of Information Sciences, please visit: www.uta.fi/sis/en/introduction/recruitment_and_staff.html. Duties The duties of associate professor are to carry out and supervise scientific research, to provide and promote instruction in their field, to keep track of the latest developments in their field, and to participate in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. Associate professors must also 1) supervise students' work, examine theses and participate in arranging examinations and grading coursework, 2) take part in the student admissions process, 3) submit to the University the necessary accounts of their teaching duties, publications, research activities, examinations held and coursework graded. Compensation and Requirement Level The remuneration of the post is based on level 7 of the job-related salary element for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish universities, at present EUR 3799,56 per month. In addition, a personal salary element based on personal performance is paid which is at most 46.3 % of the job-related salary element. 2

Sections 13 16 of the University's Regulations on Human Resources, the University's Personnel Strategy for 2012 2015 and the Rector's guidelines of 4 May 2012 define the appointment procedure for associate professors. The Rector appoints staff to positions filled through the tenure track system. The tenure track system uses expert evaluation both in the recruitment stage and in considering promotion to the next level in the system. An appointment committee nominated by the Dean of the School prepares the appointment of an associate professor. The committee proposes two experts, to whom the Dean appoints the task of evaluating the applicants' qualifications. The experts are given relevant application materials, applicant publications required by the appointment committee, and the recruitment plan described in section 14(2) of the University's Regulations on Human Resources. The experts are then asked to submit, in a predetermined time frame, to the appointment committee a written report on the applicants' scientific qualifications and other academic qualifications relevant to the position. The appointment committee bases its candidate recommendations on the applicants' qualifications, expert reports, academic merits, teaching qualifications, and other matters that may come up in the interview or research presentation. The appointment committee sends its recommendations to the Dean, who submits to the Rector the name of the candidate to be appointed. If necessary, the Dean will consult with the School s Management Board before proposing the person to be appointed. 3
