This course provides additional instruction in conjunction with the student s course of study. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation and may be repeated. This course does not fulfill one of the mathematics credits required for graduation, nor does it meet the core requirements for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Course Goals: 1. To extend the development of algebraic and geometric skills learned in the academic course taken concurrently with this elective. [NS: A, B, C, D] 2. To increase mathematical vocabulary. [NS: A, B, C] 3. To increase comprehension of mathematical concepts and properties.[ns: A, B, C, D] 4. To increase the accuracy of computational skills and fluency in mental math and estimation strategies. [NS: 1.12.6, 1.12.7, 1.12.8] Legacy High School Page: 1
5. To use formulas and equations to solve mathematical and practical problems. [NS: 2.12.2, 2.12.3, 2.12.5, 2.12.6, 4.12.7, 3.12.3, 3.12.5] 6. To formulate and solve mathematical and practical problems using algebraic and geometric techniques. [NS: A, 4.12.1, 4.12.2, 4.12.5, 4.12.6, 4.12.7, 4.12.8] 7. To evaluate algebraic expressions, equations, and formulas using the order of operations and mathematical properties of real numbers. [NS: 1.12.8, 2.12.1, 2.12.2, 2.12.3, 2.12.5, 2.12.6] 8. To develop and extend problem-solving skills in order to communicate and reason mathematically. [NS: A] 9. To increase confidence in mathematical abilities that encourages students to continue participation in mathematics classes. [NS: A, B, C, D] 10. To develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice. [CCSS] Approved May 2005, revised May 2006, May 2011. Student Supplies Students are expected to have and maintain the following supplies all year: Filler paper Pencil or pen Spiral notebook Tardy Policy Tardiness is a serious disruption to the educational program. Every student is required to be in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. With that in mind, the Legacy High School Tardy Policy will be strictly enforced. On the first and second tardy, the student will be warned; on the third tardy, the parent will be contacted; on the fourth tardy, a detention will be assigned; on the fifth and all subsequent tardies, the student will be sent to the deans office and placed on a Required Parent Conference. >30 minutes tardy = absence Legacy High School Page: 2

Tests / Quizzes 20% o Make-up tests may be taken in advance or the next school day. o Approximately 2 to 3 tests a quarter. o Tests will be returned after all students have taken test. o Tests will cover a unit with extra review questions. o Approximately 3 to 5 quizzes a quarter. o Quizzes will cover one to four sections. Homework / Classwork / Participation 80% o One point for neatness and correct heading. The other points will be earned based on completion (must show work). o Assignments will be given daily. What is not finished in class will be finished at home. o Daily bell ringer, which will be approximately 2-4 problems. Standards of Preparation: o Assignments are to be completed in pencil on loose leaf college rule filler paper. Late assignments will only be accepted during the current unit. Each assignment must have the following information in the upper right hand corner: First and Last Name Date Class Period Section / Problems Assigned Assignments without this information will not be accepted. o Reflected in assignment grading will be: Neatness Proper work shown Proper notation Effort/completion of assignment Make-up Work, Late Work, and Attendance Make-up Work: o Must be obtained within three days of an absence. o No make-up work will be accepted for a unit after the test has been given for that unit. o If you miss a unit test, quiz or notebook check, you may make up the test or quiz during class, before school or after school. Late Work: o Will only be accepted during the current unit. Absence: o Students are responsible for getting make-up work. You need to check the absent calendar or infinite campus. o Students are responsible for getting notes for absent days. o Students are responsible for scheduling a time to make-up tests and quizzes. You have until the next unit test is given. Hours of Availability: o I am available for extra help before or after school. o Please give an advanced notice if you would like to meet with me for special assistance. o If my presence is required by administration or parent conference, then I will post a notice on my door. I will try to return to my classroom in a timely manner. Attendance After the seventh unexcused absence, students will be denied credit and will receive an F for the course. BE IN ASSIGNED SEAT BEFORE THE TARDY BELLS RINGS, AND REMAIN THERE UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED. 3. REMAIN ON TASK AT ALL TIMES BY PAYING ATTENTION, LISTENING TO DIRECTIONS, TAKING NOTES, ETC 4. BRING REQUIRED MATERIALS TO CLASS EVERY DAY. 5. DO NOT ARGUE/BACKTALK WITH TEACHER REQUESTS. All Legacy High School and Clark County School District rules apply in this classroom! Consequences: When the rules are not followed the consequences, in order, are as follows: 1. Student/teacher conference 2. Student/parent/teacher conference 3. Implementation of the Legacy Progressive Discipline Plan Citizenship: Grading scale: Outstanding O Satisfactory S Needs Improvement N Unsatisfactory U Classroom Procedures: o Water in a spill proof container is the only food or drink allowed in class. If any other food or drink is brought into the classroom, you will be instructed to dispose of it in the blue trash bins in the corridor. o Students should be in their seats and working on the daily warm-up by the time the tardy bell rings. o Students must use their time wisely in class to complete assignments. o The bell does not dismiss you, I do. o Hall passes with procedures will be distributed. o Damage to school or personal property will result in disciplinary action. Scholastic Dishonesty If there is evidence of any dishonesty (i.e., copying from other students papers during any assignment and/or exam, use of textbook during an exam, talking during an exam, or using unauthorized materials during an exam), the student will not receive credit for the assignment and will receive a dean s referral. Students who turn in shared work as their own will also receive no credit (i.e. homework). Legacy High School Page: 6
