O HARA TOWNSHIP Chapter 6 - Educational Opportunities FOX CHAPEL AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT In the year 2000, O Hara Township residents comprised one third of enrollment in the Fox Chapel School District, one of the most diverse districts in the State from a socioeconomic standpoint, which includes Indiana and O Hara Townships and Fox Chapel, Blawnox, Aspinwall, and Sharpsburg Boroughs, and 84% of O Hara school age children attend classes in the School District. Through housing analysis concluded in Chapter 4 recognizes that TABLE 6-1 SCHOOL ENROLLMENT 2000 POPULATION 3-YEARS AND OVER ENROLLED IN SCHOOL West O Hara East O Hara O Hara Township # % # % # % Nursery school, preschool 133 9.5 115 11.7 248 10.4 Kindergarten 59 4.2 87 8.8 146 6.1 Elementary school (grades 1-8) 674 48.4 440 44.6 1,114 46.8 High school (grades 9-12) 278 20.0 246 24.9 524 22.0 College or grade school 249 17.9 98 9.9 347 14.6 Total 1,393 100 986 99.9 2,379 99.9 Source: U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2000, DP-2. though Fox Chapel Area School District is the key factor behind the continued attraction of families with school aged children to the Township. This healthy demographic trend is an anomaly in the region. The total enrollment for the 2007-2008 school year is 4,554 students. There are 1,943 students at the elementary level; 1,042 students at the middle school; and 1,569 students at the high school. The assumption of decreased enrollment, however, should be considered in light of the fact that migration data are not emphasized within school district enrollment projections, meaning that decreased birth rates artificially deflate enrollment figures as younger families attracted to the Fox Chapel School District are increasing or stabilizing enrollment. While enrollment will eventually level off or decline, past figures above and those projections in Chapter 3 indicate continued increases through the foreseeable future. As cited within the analysis in Chapter 3, Demographics, approximately sixteen percent of school aged children attended private schools as of the 2000 US Census. SUMMARY Chapter 6 lists the various educational opportunities available to Township residents including public and private schools and universities. The stability of enrollment in the Fox Chapel School District coupled with the related stability of spending per student help to ensure that the Fox Chapel School District will continue to be an asset to the Township, attracting renewed interest in existing neighborhoods as families move into the Township and providing quality educational opportunities for residents. Trends highlighted in Chapter 3, Demographics, help to support this assumption. Public school opportunities are supplemented by a diverse selection of private schools and universities. 6 pittsburghmoves.com August 2013 Educational Opportunities Page 6-11
