English First Additional/P3 2 DoE/November 2006 INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION 1. This question paper has FOUR sections: SECTION A: CREATIVE WRITING (50 marks) SECTION B: LONGER TRANSACTIONAL TEXTS (30 marks) SECTION C: SHORTER TRANSACTIONAL TEXTS (10 marks) SECTION D: REFERENCE/INFORMATIONAL/VISUAL AND MULTIMEDIA TEXTS (10 marks) 2. Candidates are required to answer ONE question from each section. 3. THE WRITING PROCESS 3.1 There must be clear evidence that you have planned, proof-read and edited your work. 3.2 Use one or more of the following ways of planning: Brainstorming Write down the main points Mind-mapping Clustering of ideas A planning method of your choice 4. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: 4.1 Number each question correctly. 4.2 Write the title or heading provided for each piece of writing. 4.3 Write neatly and legibly. 4.4 Pay special attention to spelling and sentence construction.

Your essay should be 200-250 words (approximately 1 1 ½ pages). Give the correct number and title of your essay. You are required to show all aspects of the writing process: planning, writing, proof-reading and editing. 1.1 I don t know exactly what I will be doing in the next ten years, but you can be sure I have all kinds of plans. - Xolani Gwala, TV personality. Your answer should be 120 150 words (approximately ½ to 1 page). You are required to show all aspects of the writing process: planning, writing, proof-reading and editing. Give the number and heading of the topic you have chosen. Pay careful attention to: o Audience, register, tone and style o Choice of words and language structures o Format 2.1 FORMAL LETTER You and a large number of other learners arrive early at school every day. However, the gates are locked and you are forced to wait outside. Write a letter to the principal of your school telling him or her about the problems that you experience because of this. 2.2 SPEECH Your best friend will be celebrating his or her sixteenth birthday soon. He or she has asked you to present a speech at the birthday party. Write the speech. 2.3 DIALOGUE You and your friends have planned to go to a party on a Saturday night but your parent or guardian is not keen to let you go. Write a dialogue between you and your parent or guardian in which you try to convince him or her to allow you to go. 2.4 INFORMAL LETTER You lost contact with a good friend who was with you at primary school when he or she moved to another province. During a recent inter-provincial competition you met someone who knows your friend and who told you that he or she was involved in a serious accident but is getting better. Write to this friend to wish him or her a speedy recovery. TOTAL SECTION B: 30

The word length given after each question should be used as a guide. Give the number and title of the topic you have chosen. Pay careful attention to: o Audience, register, tone and style o Choice of words and language structures o Format You are required to show all aspects of the writing process: planning, writing, proof-reading and editing. 3.1 FAX A radio station has asked listeners to fax requests for their favourite songs. Name the song you would like to hear and say why this song is special to you. Your message should be 80 to100 words. 3.2 VOTE OF THANKS A well-known person has come to deliver a motivational talk at your school. You have been chosen to thank him or her for the presentation. Write your vote of thanks. Your speech should be 80 to 100 words. 3.3 POSTCARD You are on a sports tour to another province and have bought a postcard showing a place of interest. Write to a friend at home to share some of your experiences and to say how the team is doing. Your message should be 80 to 100 words. Use the format given on the next page when writing the postcard in your answer book and provide the name and address of your friend.

Remember to: Use language that will persuade people to attend the event Give all the necessary details about the event NOTE: You need not use any illustrations. Your advertisement should be about 30 to 60 words.

English First Additional/P3 7 DoE/November 2006 4.2 WRITING INSTRUCTIONS OR RULES Write clear instructions in point form on ONE of the following: 4.2.1 How to study effectively. OR 4.2.2 Write rules for learners at your school that will ensure that good discipline is maintained. Your instructions should be 80 to 100 words. 4.3 POSTER The poster below is to be used in an anti-smoking campaign. Provide an eye-catching, anti-smoking heading for the poster. Write SEVEN points that will convince people to stop smoking or not to start smoking. The first and the last points have been given as examples. Do not reproduce the illustration. You need only write the heading and the seven points in your answer book. The heading and the seven points should be 50 to 80 words. Don t worry dad. It actually takes years to kill your children!
