THE RASHID DIAB ARTS CENTER In 2003, Dr. Rashid Diab embarked on an ambitious project to create a hub for artists in Khartoum. He amalgamated a variety of architectural styles, borrowing from several local styles such as Nubian, as well as international Islamic architecture. He used local and recycled materials and produced an environment friendly project. Here are pictures of the RDAC from when its foundations were laid in 2003.

The RDAC stands as a strong and strikingly beautiful Sudanese building. In the design of the Centre, Rashid Diab celebrates the artisan tradition of the rural landscape that has been a central motif in his paintings. Notice the characteristic domes and arches, the rooms within rooms often found in Sudanese villages along the Nile.

Studios, exhibition spaces, accommodations for "Artists-in-Residence" along with office functions occupy the five villas and a large adjourning garden.

Exploring the Centre is a kin to stepping inside a Diab painting. Diab himself has individually crafted the designs in each room and gallery.

The Gallery is one of the finest features of our Centre. The leading venue for Contemporary Arts in Sudan, RDAC encourages the display of distinguished and intuitive artists to share their work with the public.

The Gallery is unique for the selection of paintings, drawings, etching, sculpture and photography, as well as chosen works from the advanced student workshops. This intimate experience is very different from any other gallery in Khartoum. The over-all space of the Centre and especially the Gallery was carefully designed to use the beauty of natural light and color. Each window was meticulously placed to bring in minimum heat, and therefore, less energy spent to cool rooms. Nubian inspired geometric and sinuous ochre along with red etching on the walls are played off against the sudden light falling through a mounted colored glass mosaic on a roof.

Every Sunday evening at 8:30 pm a forum is held to discuss recent issues in Art, Culture and Society. RDAC tries to bring the Sudanese community closer together to learn new information and understand new ways and ideas. What makes the social forum different from others in Khartoum is the variety in age, gender, ethnicity and social background seen in the audience, as it is also a beautiful sample of Sudan itself. By listening to each other and solving problems together, it can go a long way in Sudan's social and economic development after years of conflict and separation.

The forum is usually held in the open-air theater that's surrounded by the lush garden. Coffee and tea is served to numerous guests and eclectic live music and theatrical performances are part of the stimulating program. So anyone can naturally feel at home and never want to end an evening of awareness and entertainment.

WORDS FROM THE RASHID DIAB ART CENTRE The acknowledgement of the National Federation of Sudanese Youth is for the most prominent figure in the country. Those who help realize the potential abilities of the future generation can give them the opportunity to live with integrity and positive expectation. They are the social pillars who enable change to a more sophisticates life, full of respect, courtesy, love and appreciation. We are honored to celebrate the naming of Dr. Rashid Diab the founder of the Rashid Diab Art Center as a climate icon and ambassador for the environment by the distinguished institution--the British Council. Due to his persistent effort to the field of Sudanese Culture and its practical appreciation, to give a new birth to the heritage of architecture and aesthetics, through the use of local materials, and with respect to the Sudanese environment, climate and ecology. We share with you the hope of enabling the potential value of your country and we thank you very much for your cooperation with future shared projects which we promise to provide in service of our country. SHIHAB OMER ABBAS General Supervisor Rashid Diab Art Center

The Rashid Diab Arts Centre is a rich source of inspiration and information for all. Set in a secluded area of Khartoum where you will get a peaceful and quiet moment away from the buzzing city. RDAC offers classes in basic, intermediate and advanced categories for courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, potting and sculpture throughout the year. Some of the advanced classes are programmed according to the demand, so all participants are advised to fill out the Workshop Application Form and send it via e-mail, snail mail or drop the application at the RDAC during our working hours.

The Centre also provides Art Residency space for Artists and Curators within the Center s five villas. Each villa is equipped with a full kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, balconies and rooftop access. These facilities were made to make things easier for visiting artists during the "Artists-In-Residence" program.

The Children's department of the Rashid Diab Arts Centre was established in January 2006, with the aim of educating children ranging from 5-15 years old in the arts. We have developed a curriculum geared to enhance a child's creative talent through an annual membership and monthly summer workshops (April-July) each followed by an exhibition as a way to stimulate his expressive abilities Workshops are thought and supervised by a group of trained art teachers and psychologist. First, we try to give, share, and care for our students, so as to create a sense of mutual support and social belonging. These qualities will be beneficial to them as well as their community at large. Then, we try to bring out qualities that will be drawn and carved onto them, as they too, draw and carve to express their creative impulses. In addition to carving and drawing, the children will also have the opportunity to color, paint, design and mould clay.

ZIKRA THE SOUVENIR SHOP Rashid Diab Arts Centre has opened a first complete shop for Modern Sudanese paintings and art crafts. Here you can find multiple choices of personal gifts for your loved ones back home, or an authentic business gift that reflects on Sudanese Contemporary Art. The third floor is the artist's studio with a personal library and a veranda overlooking the vast garden filled with botanical plants and flowers.

All parts of the house are mural painted with intricately designed carvings. Anyone can picture it as if looking at a Diab's masterpiece.
