Reviews Academic [Harvard] Good quality faculty and class size. The school operates on the Harkness table system, in which all students sit in round tables for almost all classes (with exceptions in science and math). The result of the Harkness system is an intense focus on classroom discussion. The teachers at Lawrenceville are strong-- many have degrees from the best colleges in the country. Because you live with your teachers, you also have them as athletics coaches, etc--you grow close to certain teachers. The work load varies. AP-level classes are extremely rigorous, and some other classes are more lax. Lawrenceville provides excellent training in writing and speaking-- great preparation for college level work. [Yale]All classes at Lawrenceville(except science and math classes) are taught around Harkness round-tables for at most fifteen students and a teacher. Class sizes at Lawrenceville are small and discussion-based. Math and science classes, are very interactive and demand student participation. "Consultation" periods-- twice in every day for those students that want extra help. Lawrenceville offers a wide range of AP classes. [MIT] Classes are small. History and English classes are taught around the Harkness table. Freshman year is mostly requirements that all freshman will take-- History, English, Biology, Math and Language. More autonomy is allowed after freshman year. Lots of lecturers visit. [Princeton] Centers around the Harkness method which means discussion-based classes. Class size averages 10-15. The faculty are approachable during class discussion and after class for any questions a student may have. 'Consultation' periods reserved for one-onone interaction with faculty occur every academic day. College Counseling [Harvard] First meet with college counselor in junior year. There are numerous college counselors--you can request who you want. The college counselors at Lawrenceville are very well connected-- many are former admissions officers at Ivy league schools. About 20-25% go to Ivy League schools, and probably 60%+ at top 20 schools. They distribute a booklet with the gpa, test scores, and the status of every application of every student from the previous year-- gives you a great idea where you stand and where you should be looking. [Yale] Very helpful and lots of experience. Realistic make sure that you have a range of schools to apply to. Lawrenceville offers meetings with admissions representatives from various colleges throughout the school year and puts on a college fair. [MIT] They make sure people fill in their applications on time and that all of the paperwork is done on time. Individual experiences vary greatly dependent on the work ethic of the student and the relationship between student and counselor. College Counseling [Princeton] Start the process in the winter of Junior Year and meet with our advisor roughly once per month. Extremely helpful and invest in each student's portfolio. Students are given a fair share of responsibility which includes drafting a college list, researching individual colleges and then narrowing down the list and filling out the applications. The advisors are good at reviewing essays and encourage students to strengthen sections that the admissions officers will pay particular attention to. Advisors are extremely well connected: Lawrenceville hosts a former head of Brown University admissions as well as former admissions officers from Princeton University, Harvard University, Columbia University, among others. Admissions Process [Harvard] Take the standardized test (SSAT), write some essays, get a couple faculty recommendations, and have an on campus interview, along with a brief parental interview. The majority of students are accepted for the 2nd form (9th grade). Dress conservatively for the interview (suit and tie). Be ready to talk about your interests and passions. You need to be well-rounded in some sense; this is a school that doesn't want students who are just focused on academics. Students' parents can be helpful in gaining acceptance, and they need to fill out an application for their son/daughter in addition to the student's application. [Yale] SSAT--Score in the 90%+ percentile if you are a day student, 75%+ if you are a boarder. Lawrenceville has room for everyone - athletes, artists, academics. Interview-- Admissions officers are friendly, as are faculty members who sometimes conduct interviews. Before each interview you will have a personal tour. Dress nicely and come prepared to talk about what you enjoy at school and at home. [MIT] There's an interview. Be yourself and carry out a nice conversation. Parents, don't try too hard. Make sure that your kid either writes neatly or types the application. [Princeton] Application includes several essays, an interview, SSAT scores and, your transcript. Present what makes you stand out as a candidate. Very diverse class: racially diverse, socio-economically diverse, academically diverse, etc. SSAT scores should be in the 90th percentile in each of the three sections. Familiarize yourself with Lawrenceville and demonstrate interest during the interview

and in the essays by highlighting what appeals to you about Lawrenceville and what you can contribute to the greater Lawrenceville community. Extra-Curricular Activities [Harvard] Athletics are required every trimester, although participation in extracurricular arts programs can be used to substitute for athletics for at least one trimester. Community service is a part of campus life, but not a focus. The school has a community service office, and a 40 hour graduation requirement. The school's extracurricular drama program (Periwig Club) is particularly strong, as is its newspaper. Athletics are the main core of extracurricular life. [MIT] There are many things from sports to performing arts to robotics. Within the first week, the president and faculty advisor of every group is available for students to visit, learn about, and potentially join the group. [Princeton] All students at Lawrenceville are required to participate in a physical activity in the afternoon. Such activities can range from traditional team sports, to weight training, martial arts and dance. Many arts programs including acting, music (vocal and instrumental), dance and fine art. The entire school spends one day per year (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) in community service projects in the local area. Quality of School Life [Harvard] House system communities among each house. The downside is that it's essentially like living in a frat/sorority in high school (the houses are single-sex). Can lead to feeling excluded. The cafeteria is organized by houses as well, although lots of students eat with friends from all the houses. Housemasters are like your parents at the school. Labs, libraries, tech resources are available. Campus was recently renovated. The school is located very near the town of Princeton, and is in its own town of Lawrenceville, which has a small-town feel and is extremely safe. 2 major school rule violations (drinking, cheating, drugs, etc) lead to expulsion, no questions asked. [Yale] Most freshmen at Lawrenceville get singles. The dorms at Lawrenceville have all been recently renovated. Science labs are fully stocked. Skillet stations to cook omelets, stir fry, quesadillas, and pancakes. Hot food, pasta bar, salad, and yogurt bar are always available. Lawrenceville is a safe little village. [Princeton] Houses act as dormitories. Day students are also assigned to a house and participate in house activities which include banquets, dances, etc. Each house has a housemaster, assistant housemaster and advisors who are members of the faculty. Facilities on campus are excellent: a library with 500,000 print volumes, a field house with ice rink and indoor track, 1000 seat theater, music building and art and architecture building. Athletic fields as well as a golf course and rock climbing course. Lawrenceville is situated in a beautiful area of central New Jersey, 10 minutes south of downtown Princeton.
