Grading and Rubrics Students can highlight the key ideas from the rubric Self-reflect and grade what they feel they earned Digital comment as to why they graded themselves as they did I can respond via voice, video or text note Current downside no way to lock a page after grading

Highlights & Challenges 1:1 for every student Students love the ipads Great battery life Lightweight & portable Ready to go almost instantly Digital classroom presence = fewer excuses if a student is absent/loses handouts User-friendly for students with disabilities Immediate feedback and inclusive participation Reading and annotating paperlessly Almost unlimited resources and apps for courses Easy to use No ideal workflow Students without Wi-Fi/internet at home Tablets are more about receiving information rather than inputting it but schools require students to do both Distraction factor - viewed as a game device not an educational one Options are overwhelming No Flash player or physical keyboard (limits websites and digital textbooks) Long turn-around time for fixes and repairs (backups are necessary) Keeping devices charged and ready for class Laptops are still required
Managing Technology in MS Treat technology as part of the curriculum Technology won't fix management issues but it can make them worse Have a system in place for managing student passwords Don't assume the students know everything about the technology simply because they are younger Create a list of programs/commands that you will require students to use frequently and create a class binder of 'cheat sheets' (i.e. what printer do I send things to, what are the settings for a Word document, how do I save something OneDrive, etc.) Run through your first few tech-heavy lessons with a student device if at all possible Technology is constantly changing/updating, what worked today might not work tomorrow Avoid technology for the sake of technology Include the students as part of your tech journey Be consistent but flexible Things WILL go wrong, accept it, understand it, commit to keep moving forward!
Student Survey Data taken from a poll of 65 seventh graders: 85% of students had access to internet at home 44% felt that a major obstacle to using technology for school were the limits that school imposes (web filters/blocking/etc.) 31% felt that technology enhanced their academic life while 73% felt that technology enhanced their personal life 6% found it easy to get around school filters and blocks
