New York Theological Seminary Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) WHAT IS CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION? Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is theological and professional education for ministry. It brings theological students, ordained clergy, members of religious orders and qualified laypeople into supervised encounter with persons in various clinical settings. Out of an intense involvement with persons in need, and the feedback from peers and supervisors, trainees develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minister. From theological reflection on specific human situations, they gain a new understanding of ministry. Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons, they develop skills in interpersonal and inter-professional relationships. CPE AT NEW YORK THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY New York Theological Seminary has long been recognized for its innovative programs, its pioneering spirit, and its commitment to training women and men for ministry in the real world. NYTS is a diverse and inclusive community of learning with a historic urban focus. In this diverse and inclusive community of learning along with various clinical settings, NYTS provides Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs for Levels 1 and 2. Our CPE programs are intended to meet the needs of clergy in active ministry, seminary students and selected laypersons who wish to: Enhance their sense of pastoral identity Develop their capacity for theological reflection Improve their pastoral ministry skills Deepen their own spirituality CPE at NYTS provides a range of ministry training experiences for trainees. Some of the training focus on short term and crisis intervention, while others allow the trainees to develop ongoing relationships with patients, families and staff. CPE trainees are usually able to do their clinical assignment in the setting that is best suited to their needs, as determined by their learning covenant, interests, and/or skill level. New York Theological Seminary Certificate Program in Ministry and Leadership The Certificate in Christian Leadership and Ministry (CP) at NYTS offers non-degree courses of study that provide a basic theological education suitable for both lay and ordained religious leaders. The Certificate Program is a two year program offered in English and Spanish at various sites throughout the New York metropolitan area, in other urban locations, and online. Candidates for admission need only to hold a high school degree or its equivalent, although many in the program have already completed college or even graduate degrees. Classes are held mostly on Saturdays and online, with some sites offering classes on week-nights or in intensive formats as well. The curriculum covers the basic theological disciplines of Biblical, historical, theological and practical studies, and many of the classes are taught by graduates of NYTS degree programs. Some sites are identified with specific denominations or theological traditions, but the program in all of its locations seeks to engage the rich diversity of the broader Christian movement in an open spirit. The Certificate Program in Christian Leadership and Ministry welcomes applications from women and men who possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, who seek to increase in both biblical literacy and spiritual understanding, and who desire to be better prepared for ministry. No application fee is required. Several colleges in the New York area recognize the NYTS Certificate in Leadership and Ministry for credit. Bloomfield College Bloomfield College, a private liberal arts college located in Bloomfield, NJ, recognizes the NYTS Certificate for credit toward their bachelor s degree in religion. Graduates from the NYTS Certificate in Christian Ministry who are accepted for admission to Bloomfield College may have the required freshman course, Geographies of Experience waived. They may transfer two units (8 credits) for First and Second Testament. In addition they are eligible to take an e-portfolio development course as part of the General Education Program. Through this course students will be able to apply for alternative credit (up to 16 course units) through portfolio assessment for learning that occurred through other courses in the NYTS Certificate, making for a total of 24 possible credits toward a bachelor s degree. College of New Rochelle School of New Resources The College of New Rochelle School of New Resources, which was begun in 1972, is an undergraduate liberal arts degree program designed to address the needs of adult learners in a complex urban environment. The nontraditional program takes seriously the maturity of its students, recognizing that most have family and career commitments they cannot abandon. Students are at the heart of the school s educational process that emphasizes the value of a liberal education, the legitimacy of experiential learning, and the adult student responsibility for assisting in the development of their curriculum. With seven branch campuses, located throughout New York City and southern Westchester, the School of New Resources serves a population as diverse in age and ethnic background as New York itself. Students who are accepted into the School of New Resources who hold the NYTS Certificate in Christian Ministry will receive 18 credits toward their bachelor degree. Students may apply to at any of the seven branch campuses of the School of New Resources in the New York metropolitan area. For more information on SNR-CNR contact the school at (800) 288-4767 or online at www.cnr.edu/snr.htm. State University of New York at Old Westbury SUNY Old Westbury is a dynamic and diverse public liberal arts college that fosters academic excellence through close interaction among students, faculty and staff. Old Westbury weaves the values of integrity, community engagement, and global citizenship into the fabric of its academic programs and campus life. In an environment that cultivates critical thinking, empathy, creativity and intercultural understanding, we endeavor to stimulate a passion for learning and a commitment to building a more just and sustainable world. The College is a community of students, teachers, staff, and alumni bound together in mutual support, respect, and dedication to its mission. SUNY Old Westbury recognizes the NYTS Certificate for 24 credits toward the BA degree in either management or liberal arts. NYTS also collaborates with specific communions or communities to offer basic theological education at the Certificate level for specialized areas of concentration. These cohorts depend on the number of students able to form a specialized cohort group, and are not available every year. The areas of further specialized concentration are as follows: Certificate Program in Convergence Studies The Convergence Movement brings together catholic, evangelical, and pentecostal or charismatic streams of Christian tradition in a dynamic movement for renewal in both liturgy and service. The movement has spawned a number of institutional networks over the past several decades, with a wide range of theological voices in leadership. One of these networks is the Diocese of Christ the King, with its headquarters in Rochester, New York. Through a close collaboration, the Diocese of Christ the King and NYTS offer an Institute for Convergence Studies that provides theological education for convergence leadership in online and intensive face-to-face formats. Certificate Program in Radical Inclusion Radical Inclusion is the intentional inclusion of all persons in leadership and in the wider life of the faith community, especially people who have traditionally lived at the margins of society, such as people suffering from substance abuse, people living with HIV/AIDS, same-gender loving people, and trans-gendered people. The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries (TFAM) is an international network of radically inclusive communities representing multiple denominational backgrounds and under predominantly African American and Latino/a leadership. Churches in the Fellowship embrace and promote a theology of radical inclusivity which, by its very nature, requires an equally radical social ministry reaching to the furthest margins of society to serve all in need without prejudice or discrimination. Through a close collaboration TFAM and NYTS offer an Institute in Inclusive Ministries with offers online and in intensive face-to-face formats. Certificate Program in Islamic Studies The Certificate in Islamic Studies is a 2-year program designed to provide a comprehensive view of the Islamic faith tradition from the perspective of moderate Muslims living in contemporary urban society practicing inclusive forms of Islam. The program explores the spiritual, moral, and ethical principles of Islam which are also inherent in the Jewish and Christian faith traditions. While designed primarily for Islamic religious leaders, it is open to persons of every faith tradition who wish to learn more about Islam, and who wish to participate more effectively in urban ministry in a multifaith context. NYTS collaborates closely with The House of Peace in offering this certificate. Tuition and Fees: Tuition per 12 session class (CP and CASAC) $370.00 Tuition per 6 session class (Spring Only) $175.00 Late Registration Fee $75.00 Returned check fee $40.00 Graduation fee $225.00 CASAC application fee $25.00 Clinical Pastoral Education application fee $25.00 Clinical Pastoral Education program fee $1,200.00 per unit
