2016 17 Prgram and Selectin Prcess Infrmatin Overview Established in 1989, and nw in its 27th year, the Presidential Administrative Fellwship (PAF) prgram is a tw year cmmitment that benefits bth the student and the university. The PAF prgram ffers graduating GW undergraduates administrative experience within varius ffices at the university while als giving them the pprtunity t pursue a master's degree, and the ptential fr a graduate certificate, in their chsen field. The PAF prgram cmbines classrm educatin, prfessinal experiences, service pprtunities, and ambassadrial interactin with faculty, staff, and alumni t prvide an excellent learning experience in leadership and administratin as a fundatin fr nearly any prfessinal career path. Unlike traditinal graduate fellwships, the PAF prgram builds upn academic learning and faculty interactin with prfessinal experience and ambassadrial invlvement with university leadership, alumni, and friends t prvide a wellrunded and rigrus experience. The leadership and prfessinal skills gained thrugh the PAF prgram are a slid fundatin fr nearly any future career path upn cmpletin f the graduate degree. In return fr this investment in the PAF prgram, the university receives a pl f highly mtivated and talented students wh wrk t advance the university frm within ffices acrss the institutin. Additinally, PAF alumni nw numbering 131 cntinue this legacy f service t GW thrugh leadership rles with the Bard f Trustees, the GW Alumni Assciatin, schl and affinity advisry grups, and ther activities. Rle and Expectatins PAFs are expected t wrk 20 hurs per week in the university ffice in which they are placed (the placement) thrughut the academic year (mid August thrugh mid May) and, n average, five hurs per week n PAF prgram duties and university and cmmunity ambassadrial and service activities. Summer placement wrk is ptinal, is nt included in the base cmpensatin, and such arrangements must be mutually agreed upn by the PAF and the placement site. PAFs will undertake the fllwing rles during the 1

curse f the fellwship: 1. Wrk as a graduate student staff member within a designated GW ffice (placement), learn the needs and characteristics f that ffice, and perfrm the prjects and duties assigned under the guidance and mentrship f an experienced Preceptr (supervisr) and ther staff members in the placement ffice. 2. Attend and actively participate in PAF weekly meetings, PAF prgram cmmittee meetings, and related prfessinal and academic develpment activities with fellw PAFs t advance the visin and missin f the PAF prgram and the university. PAF prgram cmmittees include, but are nt limited t, recruitment, selectin, alumni relatins, cmmunicatin, service, prfessinal develpment, fellwship, and academics. 3. Plan, manage, and balance prfessinal (placement) respnsibilities, full time academic studies, service, university ambassadrship, and persnal life. 4. Interact with GW students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends. Discuss salient issues facing the university, slicit ideas and suggestins, and fllw up where pssible with apprpriate university ffices and staff. 5. Fulfill ambassadrial rles, including serving n university cmmittees, representing the university t internal and external cnstituencies, and participating in university events, as guided by the PAF Administrative Advisr and thers n the PAF Advising Team (PAT). 6. Participate in service related events in and arund the university and the cmmunity. 7. Prvide feedback regularly, penly, and in a cnstructive manner t the Preceptr(s), thers in the placement ffice, ther PAFs, and the PAF Advising Team. 8. Adhere t all university plicies (including the university s Statement f Ethical Principles and the Cde f Student Cnduct), GW Values, and PAF prgram guidelines, including satisfactry academic prgress in the master s degree prgram, satisfactry perfrmance in the PAF placement and in the PAF prgram, cnfidentiality, and the expected number f hurs t be spent wrking in the placement ffice and n PAF prgram activities. The PAF placement and fellwship and ambassadrial activities, as described abve, are the nly wrk the PAF shuld undertake during the academic year (again, mid August t mid May). Hwever, the PAF Advising Team will cnsider requests fr additinal wrk utside f GW during the academic year, paid r unpaid, n a case by case basis, and especially after the PAF has established a recrd f success in the placement, master s degree prgram, and within the PAF prgram fellwship and ambassadrial activities. 2

Cmpensatin and Benefits In return fr their cmmitment t the university, PAFs are currently prvided with: GW Tuitin and Fees Grant : A grant cvering up t 42 required credit hurs f academic study and required fees fr full time study (des nt include bks and supplies) in a GW master s degree prgram. PAFs will have the pprtunity t appeal fr cverage f additinal tuitin and required fees if the master s degree prgram requires mre than 42 credit hurs t graduate, such as fr a graduate certificate in additin t the master s degree. This grant will cver the cst f GW tuitin assciated with up t ne study abrad ffering during the appintment as a PAF that is a GW prgram r has a reciprcal agreement with GW (the PAF prgram cannt pay nn GW tuitin). PAFs will be respnsible fr paying all ther csts assciated with the study abrad, including prgram fees, travel, ldging, fd, incidentals, etc. Graduate Salary and Stipend : A graduate salary and stipend currently ttaling $25,000, including a salary f $7,500 and a stipend f $17,500, fr part time wrk in the placement ffice during the academic year, defined as mid August thrugh mid May, during the tw year appintment as a PAF. The salary and stipend will be paid in nine equal installments frm August thrugh April, with the stipend paid at the beginning f the mnth (beginning n r abut August 1 and ending n r abut April 1) and the salary paid at the end f the mnth (beginning n r abut August 31 and ending n r abut April 30). Taxes are withheld n the salary prtin f the cmpensatin, while they are nt withheld n the stipend prtin and will need t be paid by the PAF in accrdance with their wn persnal financial circumstances. Summer placement wrk is ptinal, is nt included in the base cmpensatin (additinal cmpensatin is prvided), and such arrangements must be mutually agreed upn by the PAF and the placement site. Academic and Prfessinal Develpment: A set f prfessinal develpment resurces which allw PAFs t craft a unique experience tailred t their career gals and prfessinal interests. These resurces include: Individual prfessinal gal setting and perfrmance reviews guided by the Preceptr and the PAF Advising Team; Wrk dne n a cre set f prfessinal cmpetencies during weekly meetings, cmmittee respnsibilities, retreats, and day t day placement experiences; A 180 Assessment cmbined with caching frm the PAF Prfessinal Develpment Advisrs during the secnd year in the prgram t identify and build areas f strength and imprvement; Participatin in academic enhancement wrkshps guided by the PAF 3

Faculty Advisr with the gal f strengthening crss disciplinary understanding and cllabratin between all PAFs; and The pprtunity t apply fr a PAF Prfessinal and Academic Develpment Fund grant t cver expenses related t a prfessinal develpment r academic experience such as a cnference, training, r summer internship. GW Student Health Insurance Credit : A credit t cver part f the GW Student Health Insurance Plan during the appintment as a PAF, as fllws: Internatinal students: Unless a request is made and apprved t waive the required plan, the PAF will be autmatically enrlled and receive a credit n the GW student accunt f $750 fr the fall semester and $750 fr the spring semester nce the Office f Graduate Assistantships and Fellwships verifies enrllment in the plan and status as a PAF. All ther students: If chsing t enrll in the plan fr the entire academic year the PAF will receive the credit as a supplemental $1,500 stipend check in Octber. Or, if chsing t enrll fr nly ne semester as a time the PAF will receive the credit as a supplemental $750 stipend check fr each semester enrlled, up t a ttal f $1,500. Either way, the stipend check(s) will be issued nce the Office f Graduate Assistantships and Fellwships verifies enrllment in the plan and status as a PAF. Eligibility PAF applicants must meet certain criteria in rder t be eligible. They must be undergraduate senirs graduating frm GW in fall 2016 r spring 2017. Applicants must be in gd academic and disciplinary standing with the university and have cmpleted at least 60 credits in residence at GW and have a minimum 3.25 cumulative GW GPA by the end f the fall 2016 semester. Applicants must als be admitted int and starting in a GW master's degree prgram in fall 2017 befre accepting the PAF pprtunity. Students cmpleting cmbined 5 year bachelr s/master s degree prgrams are eligible fr the PAF prgram s lng as they are willing t fulfill the tw year, full time PAF prgram cmmitment by extending the scheduled cmpletin f their master s degree prgram and/r pursuing a graduate certificate in additin t their master s degree. Hwever, Law (JD/LLM) and Medical Schl (MD) students are nt eligible fr the PAF prgram. 4
