Parent information that was supplied in writing, has been passed on to teachers and will be added to the knowledge that teachers have of each child. Please note that it is not possible to take late requests now. We are very confident that our teaching teams will bring their expert knowledge of the social, emotional and academic needs of every child as they carefully create each class grouping. Students will meet their 2018 teacher and classmates in the last week of term. Staffing for 2018 is almost complete. We are very much looking forward to Mrs. Emma Broadhurst, Mrs. Jos Hollyman, Mrs Sharmini Philp, Mrs Elle Powell and Mrs JulieAnn Stark returning to our 2018 teaching team. We are also very pleased to announce that Mrs Adele Brice was the successful applicant for our recent Assistant Principal vacancy. We congratulate Adele on this provisional appointment and look forward to her continuing to drive curriculum and innovation into the future at WPPS. As our school grows, this second AP role will expand our current leadership profile along with Marg Askew and myself. 2018 Preps On Wednesday, our 68 delightful new Preps had their final transition morning with their class teacher for 2018. They all had a wonderful morning, meeting their teacher, classmates and the big buddy that will look after them next year. Our Grade 5 students were bursting with excitement as they met their buddy and shared the special buddy bag that they had made for them as a homework task this term. It is such a special relationship that not only supports our preps but gives all of our Grade 6 students an important leadership role in their final year of primary school. 1st of May, Hats off day. But always remember, Hats on again in September. A reminder the first day of Spring, we follow the Sunsmart policy and all children MUST wear a hat. NO HAT, NO PLAY Hats are available to purchase at the office for $12.00.

From the Principal s Desk cont... Smooth Transitions At this time of the year setting students up for a smooth transition is a high priority. This is not just transition from pre-school to prep or Grade 6 to secondary school, but also from one grade level to the next. As with any change, most students feel both anticipation but also a little nervousness. To make this process smooth and set students up for success we plan various ways to familiarise students with what this new stage will look like and feel like. As students move up through the school, there can still be worries about changing teacher, classroom and level, especially when it is a change to a new section of the school. Prep to Grade 1, Grade 2 to the Grade 3 building and Grade 4 up to the Grade 5 building can be both exciting but a bit daunting for some children. To help alleviate these little worries, we will begin our in-school transition sessions shortly with classes moving up to their next level to check out what it will be like. We will have four sessions in all over the next two weeks so that children can get a feel of their new surroundings. Initially we get students to identify what is the same, what is different and generally just begin to let them imagine being in their new surroundings next year. On the final transition session in the last week of school, students meet their new teacher and class in their new classroom, which really helps students feel more confident about their transition to the next level. For our Grade 6 students, the transition to secondary school is both exciting but also tinged with a little sadness at leaving their primary school friends and teachers. To support students with this transition, we have many traditions that honour and celebrate their time at WPPS including making their Memory Books, Grade 6 Graduation, their Fun Day Out celebration day and their final whole school assembly to say goodbye to their peers, teachers and most importantly their Prep buddies. In preparation for their new beginning, we do a lot of work with students right through their Grade 5/6 years especially around the skills and dispositions that will help them succeed in the future. In Grade 6 the classroom teachers run sessions and discussions to help students address any fears or worries they may have so that they feel confident and ready to begin this next exciting phase in their education. Our students generally move on to around 15 or more different Government and independent schools, so transition visits to their new schools and visits by the Transition Coordinators from the secondary schools to meet our students, are an important part of the process also. Change is an inevitable part of our lives and although transition through school can cause children to feel a little anxious, we have found that with the processes we have put into place, students generally feel excited and ready for the next challenge! Thank you to our School Helpers There are so many parents, extended family member and members of the wider community who help us in so many ways. It was a lovely chance to say thankyou this week at our special morning tea. We truly appreciate the magnificent contribution that you have made to our learning community! Some important dates for your diary This last two weeks of the year is a very busy time. Please put these dates in your diary.
