About Indian Distance Education Association (IDEA) Indian Distance Education Association (IDEA) is the leading national professional body of academicians, policy makers, administrators and all other stakeholders of distance and open learning system of education. Members are drawn from National, State Open Universities and Conventional Universities offering courses in dual mode, Agriculture Universities, Extended Educational Institutions and other Academic Institutions. IDEA annual session provides a congenial platform to academia, professionals, policy makers, distance educators, activists and other interested in Distance and Open Learning to meet, exchange views, share research findings and experiences and debate all aspects of ODL. About University of Jammu The University of Jammu, accredited as A grade University by National Assessment and Accredition Council of India, came into existence in 1969 vide Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir. The main campus of the University is located in Jammu, along with its offsite campuses at Bhaderwah, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramnagar, Reasi and Udhampur. The University offers a number of academic and professional programmes leading to Postgraduate, M.Phil., Ph.D. degrees, Postgraduate diplomas, Certificates and graduate degrees through its thirty six departments, Directorate of Distance Education, thirteen Centres and more than one hundred sixty affiliated colleges. The Campus has excellent IT facilities with optical fiber networking and Wi-Fi system. The Central Library of the University has a collection of about 4.30 lac books with automated options powered by LIBSYS software, CD-ROM database, RFID and interconnected computer terminals. It has more than four thousand journals available online under UGC INFONET. The University has developed links and collaborations with more than thirty institutions at national and international level for various research and academic programmes. The University has also been identified as one of the sixteen Universities in the country for the promotion of Indian Higher Education abroad. About the DDE, University of Jammu Motivated by the objective to make available opportunities of higher education to the door steps of those learners who can not avail higher education because of various reasons, the University of Jammu established the Directorate of Distance Education (then known as Institute of Correspondence Education) in March 1976. At present, the DDE is offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. viz., B.A., B.Com, B.Ed, M.Ed, M.Com, M.A. in Urdu, Hindi, English, Dogri, Sociology and P.G. Diploma in Business Management. D.D.E. is launching M.A. in Political Science and Economics shortly. The Directorate has established seven Learner s Support Centres, (LSC) at Kathua, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Bhaderwah and Kishtwar. With the establishment of these Centres the Directorate has taken another giant leap forward step to achieve its objective to spread distance learning programs. The Directorate imparts teaching to the distance learners through printed course material written on SLM format. Course material is supported by personal contact programmes, assignments / tests, library services and guidance etc. About the Conference The challenges in the field of education are many. Most urgent challenges faced by the educational institution in India requires urgent attention in the areas : (i) improving learning input-outcomes, (ii) meeting the shortage of quality faculty/teachers and (iii) industry academic links to enhance employability of pass outs, (vi) increasing Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 30 percent by 2020. To meet these challenges, the role of open learning system needs to be utilized drastically, effectively and efficiently.
Directorates of distance education are working in most of the traditional Universities to fulfil learner s needs to facilitate learning at their own place and pace by creating learning content, learning environment, quality infrastructure and leadership. Therefore, important concerns such as faculty development, students welfare in ODL system requires immediate attention. Research in the system of distance education can helps to find out different ways for its development. Distance Education as a system needs to enhance employability skills among the learners, curb dropout rates for the sustenance of the system, prepare a path for community development. Collaborative Practices in ODL has ample scope for the furtherance of ODL system.
