General Information: Intermediate Word 2013 is a self-paced course that allows you to progress at your own rate. In many cases, you will be expected to use your prior knowledge to determine what features and formats to use. As in the business world, many assignments are given without detailed instructions. The person responsible for completing word processing tasks makes many decisions regarding style and content of the work. This course is presented in weekly units to assist you in planning your course work. In order to complete this course in one term, it is important that you closely follow this schedule. This instructional packet is your road map for the course. Always have it available in class so that you are following correct procedures and completing the correct assessments. Reading your textbook and planning your work outside of class allows maximum computer time. Weekly Assignments: Your assignment sheets are provided on a weekly basis to assist in your completion of work. Each weekly assignment is divided into three sections, shown below. The following illustration shows the symbols and instructions. Reading Assignment Self-Check and Show Instructor Submit for Instructor Review/Scoring Complete the Reading Assignments outside of class; it is recommended you complete these before completing the work at the computer. The exercises and other work listed in the Self-Check and Show Instructor column provide instruction in Word features and are required. Listed in this column are self-check documents you will show your instructor in class on your computer screen. It is your responsibility to self-check these documents against the pictures at the beginning of each chapter in your textbook. All work listed in the Submit for Instructor Review/Scoring column is required and will be recorded in your Progress Record. Documents will be assessed using the Document Scoring Guide. Print these documents and place them in your folder. CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 4

The Scoring Guide is used to provide an authentic assessment tool. In the business world, your documents need to be without error. Sometimes documents with a minor error may still be used. Word Processing Document Scoring Guide Error-Free Usable Minor Edit Major Edit Unusable Incomplete Accuracy and Appearance No text or data errors No format errors Software features used correctly This document looks professional in every way Followed all instructions as presented One text or data error that does not alter meaning of document One minor format error Followed all instructions as presented One error that spell check could not find Minor text or data error Two minor format errors One minor instruction not followed Two errors that spell check could not find. The Scored Documents will be assessed by your instructor using the Document Scoring Guide. It is very important that you look over your returned Scored Documents before completing the class Project. Memo Writing Assignments: Throughout the term, you will write memos to your instructor; they are assigned in your weekly assignment sheets. These memos provide a way of reinforcing your CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 5

writing skills, provide an opportunity to compose information at the computer, and provide feedback to your instructor. Please follow the memo format in the 2013 Style Guide. Graded Projects: While there are no tests, there are two comprehensive graded projects to be completed for the course. The documents used in these projects are designed to test your overall knowledge of Word and combine several features of Word into one document. The projects are open book/open note. They are untimed but must be completed in class. As you complete projects, you will be asked to turn in the test disk and all of your printed work, even the draft copies. You can mark an X through those pages that are not to be scored. When you are ready to begin the Graded Project, fill out a Test Request form. On the form, indicate Test 1 (for Project 1) or Test 2 (for Project 2). Capstone Assignment: During the term, you will be working on a capstone assignment that will incorporate all your acquired Word skills while utilizing your creativity and critical thinking to develop job-oriented documents. You will begin the capstone assignment during the 1 st half of the term and complete it at the end of the term. Extra Credit: No extra-credit work is available. Final Grade: Your final grade is determined by the following calculations: Self-Check Assignments Scored Assignments Projects Capstone Assignment Total How Many? Points/Each Total Points Percentage of Grade 15 1 15 6% 18 5 90 37% 2 40 80 33% 2 30 60 24% 235 100% CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 6

Final Grade 194-215 A 172-193 B 151-171 C 129-150 D 0-128 F If you do not complete all course requirements but you have been consistently submitting the course work during the term, you may request from your instructor a grade of CIPR (Course in Progress-Reregister). Receiving a CIPR grade means that you must register (and pay) for the class again, but you may then complete the course beginning with assignments that you have not yet completed. An Incomplete is available only when a small amount of work is not yet completed, such as one test. An Audit must be declared in writing within the first week of the term. The Pass/No Pass grading option must be requested by the eighth week of the term. Attendance: Regular attendance is essential in order to meet all requirements. Your instructor may have an attendance policy that will be discussed during the first week of class. In the business world, it is your responsibility to get to your job on time. This is also your responsibility in the classroom. TBA Hours: This class is scheduled four hours per week (day students). However, you will need to arrange for one additional hour of time. This time can be completed during the open lab hours. Your instructor will inform you of these hours during the first week of class. You may also use these times to get caught up if you fall behind the recommended time schedule. Time Commitment: This course meets for five hours per week (one hour is TBA). To meet the college standard of two hours outside of class for each credit, plan to spend an additional four hours per week in order to complete this course. Campus resources for computer work are the open lab or the Student Computer Center (SCC) in the Library. Completion of Work: In the workplace, you will be responsible for completing projects without step-by-step instructions. It is your responsibility to learn some new concepts on your own. In order to review concepts, we recommend you complete any additional exercises you may need. If you have questions about any Word concept, use the Index and Table of Contents in your textbook or use Word s Help feature. CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 7

Follow these procedures to successfully complete the course: 1. Read the chapter. 2. Complete the self-check exercises. Be sure to look for additional instructions by the exercises with a footnote number in your packet. Compare your documents to the pictures at the beginning of the chapter. Show the exercises to your instructor on your computer screen. 3. Complete the assigned assessments and submit them to your instructor. Remember to look for additional instructions by the exercises with a footnote number in your packet. 4. Write assigned memos to your instructor. Style Guide: A Style Guide will be provided as an example of correctly formatted business documents. Refer to the Style Guide throughout the course. Special Needs Students: The Computer Applications/Office Systems Department, in conjunction with the Office for Students with Disabilities, will make every effort to accommodate persons with physical and learning disabilities. It is the responsibility of students with special needs to discuss this with his/her instructor during the first week of class. Marketable Skills Awards and Employment Skills Training Certificates: Students who take a series of related classes may earn a Marketable Skills Award. Informational handouts are in the CAS classrooms. Viruses Whenever you use a computer system, there is a risk that viruses may infect your data disks. Every effort is made to eliminate viruses from our classrooms; however, no system that is used as frequently as this one can remain totally virus free. You may want to make a backup disk of the data files needed for your course, and use one disk on your home computer and one in the classroom. Be sure to practice safe computing at home and at work. Install virus-protection software on your home system. The CAS/OS Department accepts no responsibility for viruses transferred to your data disk or to another system. CAS 217 Procedures CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 9

Reference Line Every document in this course requires a reference line; it is placed a double space after the body of the document.* After you key each document, leave one blank line, type your two initials, and then type the document name. (For example, jh C06-E02-BestFitResume) Save your documents to your data disk using this exact name. This reference line helps you remember what you named documents and find your work at the shared printer. *For documents that are more visual than text oriented, the reference line can be placed in a footer. Saving Documents Rutkosky provides suggested file names for saving documents. Place your initials in front of those suggested file names; this identifies your work from that of other students also taking this course and completing the same work. Be sure to save work from each chapter in the appropriate subdirectory. What Makes an Acceptable Memo? The interoffice memorandum (called memo) is used within a business as a quick way to communicate with others within that business. You will use a memo to communicate with your instructor. When completing a memo, use the correct format shown in the Style Guide. Your memo must be grammatically correct with no spelling or punctuation errors. Spell check must be used. Write in complete sentences, and proofread carefully. You may want to prepare a rough draft of your memo outside of class before completing the final copy at the computer. Your instructor may ask you to correct the memo if it is not done correctly. Using the Scoring Guide After completing a document to submit, use the Document Scoring Guide to assess your work. If both the accuracy and appearance are error free, submit the document to your instructor. If not, edit the document so that it is error free. Your instructor will also assess the document. Using the Document Scoring Guide to evaluate your work is excellent preparation for the Graded Projects that you will complete in this course. Scored documents are also an opportunity to determine the types of errors your instructor marks and what the results may be on a graded project. CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 10

Accessible Word Document Assignment Creating an accessible Word document allows all people including those with visual, hearing, mobility, and learning disabilities to use an electronic copy of the document. By being mindful of this while creating Word documents, text readers and other devices will be able to interpret a document for people who need this assistance. CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 19

This assignment will give you the opportunity to turn a plain text file into an accessible document. 1. Open the DL Syllabus file located under the Supplemental Files folder in your Data Files. Save your file as xxdl Syllabus replace xx with your initials. 2. Select the Centered Style Set under the Design tab in the ribbon. 3. Apply the Heading 1 style to Syllabus at the start of the document. 4. Apply the Heading 2 style to the two DL101 headings. 5. Apply the Heading 3 style to the following headings: Course Information, Instructor Information, Assignments/Assessments, Special Accommodations, and Best Practices when using complex graphics. 6. Apply the Heading 4 style to the following headings: Grading Scale and Late Work & Make-up Policy. 7. Format the 4 lines under Course Information as a bullet list. This will allow a reader to see this as a proper list with four related items. 8. Add Alt Text to the Smile Face picture so that there is a description of the picture for people who can t see it clearly. To do this, right click on the face and choose Format Shape. Click on Layout and Properties, then click on Alt Text. In the Description box, remove the Figure 1 text, if necessary, and type This picture is of a smiling face. Click the X next to Format Shape to close this box. 9. Add the following Alt Text to the graph in the syllabus: This graph summarizes the growth of students using home broadband during the period from January 2004 to 2008. The percentage increased from 22% in 2004 to 48% in 2008. Since this text would benefit all students, add the same text to a caption under the graph. 10. Add Alt Text to the grade table. To do this, right-click on the table and choose Table Properties. Click the Alt Text tab in the window. In Title, type Grading Scale Table. In the Description, type This table shows how letter grades are assigned based on points and percentages. 11. Screen readers read a table from left to right, and top to bottom; and they need column headings and separate rows to read a table correctly. To add headings to our table, click in the top row. Click the Table Tools Design tab in the ribbon. Make sure Header Row is checked in Table Style Options. Then click on the Table Tools Layout tab. Click Repeat Header Rows in the Data section of this ribbon tab. Separate each grade into its own row to improve the readability of the table. CAS 217 Intermediate Word 2013 Page 20

12. Use color to make the 2 nd line under Late Work & Make-up Policy stand out. It is important to use enough color contrast, so that people who are low-vision or color blind will be able to benefit from the information. Highlight this line and make the text red and bold. 13. Figures need to be in line with text in an accessible document. Make the smile face, graph, and the caption describing the graph are in line with text by completing the following steps for each: Click on the figure and then click Position in the Drawing Tools tab in the ribbon. Then choose In Line with Text. 14. The hyperlink in Special Accommodations section is not descriptive. To fix this, right-click on the hyperlink and choose Edit Hyperlink.
