Excellence Initiative Background to the Excellence Initiative LMU was the most successful participant in both rounds of the nationwide Excellence Initiative. The aim of the Excellence Initiative, instigated by the Federal and State Governments, is to promote top-level research at German universities: In the first round of the program, comprising two grant periods (2006 / 2007 2012), a total of 1.9 billion euros was provided to the successful competitors. A total of 2.7 billion euros is being made available for the second phase (2012 2017). From Art History to Zoology with some 150 degree courses, LMU s academic curriculum covers an enormous range, offering a wide variety of subject combinations and interdisciplinary perspectives. Studies Lehre@LMU an integrated program of measures to enhance the study conditions Lehre@LMU has three major objectives: To strengthen the focus on research and its practical application by developing integrative teaching models. To improve targeted mentoring and counseling services for students, so as to further their academic and professional development. To design further-education programs for academic and advisory personnel, as well as training students for tutorial roles, that equip them to achieve the first two aims. LMU will use resources provided by the Pact for Quality in Teaching initiated by the German Government to implement the complete program: From 2012 until 2016, a total 23 million euros will be devoted to Lehre@LMU.
