Welcome Message from the Principal & Chairman Welcome to our prospectus for Scarborough UTC, where you have taken the first steps to create your tomorrow, today. It can be difficult to decide at which school and what courses to study, but our aim is to provide you with the tools to enable you to meet your aspirations as you prepare for making your subject choices. We are a college for 14-18 year olds sponsored by the University of Hull, giving students a fantastic opportunity to gain practical experience in engineering and computer science whilst studying for Technical Qualifications, GCSEs and A-Levels. Working in partnership with employers allows us to deliver an exciting curriculum with students benefitting from a wealth of commercial knowledge and the chance to experience work and everyday life within a business context. Our students will become the new generation of engineers, scientists, designers and technicians, contributing towards Scarborough s continuing transformation into a centre of excellence for innovation. So if you want to be part of a new wave of learning and benefit from the latest technology, Scarborough UTC can offer you a whole new experience and we look forward to welcoming you in September. Tim Englefield, Principal. Peter Wilkinson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Studying at Scarborough UTC will open up a world of exciting careers in areas such as cyber technology, robotics and engineering. 3

A UTC is a school designed for ambitious young people, aged 14-18, who have aspirations to become leading future innovators. It is funded by the government, is free to attend and is sponsored by a number of successful companies along with the University of Hull. Our UTC will offer technically orientated courses of study (60% academic/40% practical), combining National Curriculum requirements such as GCSEs and A-Levels with technical and vocational elements. It will also teach business skills and the use of ICT. This approach offers clear routes into higher education or further learning in work. The study day is longer than in a typical school and is more in line with a commercial working day. Currently there are 48 UTCs open across the country, each specialising in a technical subject to meet. the needs of local and national industries. The strength of Scarborough UTC is its close working relationship with employers that is forged through the workplace, higher education and the Baker Dearing Trust. By exposing our brightest and most determined young people to the full scale of engineering and design disciplines and opportunities, we will provide a unique learning experience and strongly reflect the commitment of the employers and the University of Hull to ensure the best educational offering in North Yorkshire. Scarborough UTC is there every step of the way through the stages of the student s education. We will help to lay the foundations in engineering, design and control whilst also guiding towards a clear onward learning path through further education, university or the workplace. www.utccolleges.org 4
