FAMILY AUDIO TOURS $7 ($5 members) The Lions Trail tour, designed for children ages 5 to 10, offers an informative, dramatic, and fun tour of the collection and is available in English or Spanish. AGES 3 5 Mini Masters Japanese Animal Sculptures Sunday, November 4, and Saturday, November 17 11:00 12:00 Listen to a story while you meet animals made of clay on a tour of the Japanese art galleries. Then, go to the studio to create a sculpture of your favorite animal. Pleasant Presents Sunday, December 2, and Saturday, December 15 11:00 12:00 Listen to a story, discover patterns from around the world on a guided tour, and then create your own pattern to make wrapping paper for a special gift. AGES 6 12 Family Workshops Family Yoga and Art Sunday, November 4 2:00 4:00 Breathe, stretch, relax, and discover your inner balance and serenity in an introductory family yoga class. Learn traditional yoga poses and poses inspired by a guided gallery visit. Cost is $15 per one adult member and child, plus $5 for each additional person. Movers and Makers with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Sunday, November 11 11:00 1:00 Explore the theme of celebrations at this special collaborative workshop led by educators from Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and the Art Institute. This program, which features Marc Chagall s America Windows, combines elements of visual art and contemporary dance and includes an interactive guided gallery tour as well as a movement workshop in the studios. Paper Work Sunday, November 18 2:00 3:30 Take a tour of contemporary prints, drawings, and collages in the exhibition Rarely Seen Contemporary Works on Paper (galleries 124 127), and then create a large scale drawing of your own. Victorian Holiday Treasures Sunday, December 16 2:00 3:30 Visit the Thorne Miniature Rooms to explore seasonal decorating styles from times gone by, and then make your own Victorian-inspired holiday treasure to take home. AGES 13 19 Teen Workshops* Paper and Prints Saturday, November 17 11:00 4:00 Explore a variety of art-making techniques in the galleries, and then experiment with printmaking, collage, drawing, and painting to make your own works of art on paper. Special Programs ADULTS AND CHILDREN AGES 9 AND UP Film Screening: The Painting (Le Tableau) Saturday, November 3 11:00 12:45 Price Auditorium Registration not required Enjoy a feast for the eyes as well as the imagination in this feature-length animated film from France directed by Jean-François Laguionie. Experience an imaginary world where characters in paintings come to life. Follow the adventures of Claire, her beloved Ramo, and her best friend Lola as they journey to discover what the Painter has in mind for all his creations. (See right for a related Tween Workshop.) The film will be screened in French with English subtitles. This special presentation is in partnership with the Chicago International Children s Film Festival and the Cultural Service at the Consulate General of France in Chicago. Home for the Holidays The Art Institute can feel like a second home, but never more so than during the holiday season. So join us for some of the museum s most beloved holiday family traditions from classics like Wreathing of the Lions to newer favorites like the decorated Thorne Miniature Rooms and enjoy being home for the holidays. ALL AGES 21st Annual Wreathing of the Lions Friday, November 23 Drop in between 10:30 and 3:00 Registration not required Start the holidays with a roar at this Chicago family favorite. Our beloved lions don their traditional evergreen wreaths as the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band offers musical tidings of joy. After the outdoor ceremony, on Michigan Avenue at 10:00, families are invited to stop by the Ryan Education Center to create wreaths decorated with small golden embossed relief sculptures inspired by Of Gods and Glamour. ADULTS AND CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UP Member Workshop: Holiday Thorne Rooms Saturday, December 8 2:00 4:00 Thursday, December 13 6:00 8:00 $30 per person Meet Lindsay Mican Morgan, the caregiver of the Thorne Rooms, and learn about the process of decorating the rooms for the holiday season. Then, warm up in the Ryan Education Center with a drop-in workshop, where you can make your own luminous ornament, and enjoy a family gallery walk at 6:00. Picturing Poetry Opens November 17 Picture Book Gallery Ryan Education Center Picturing Poetry features dynamic interpretations of verse by picture book artists Carin Berger, R. Gregory Christie, Brian Pinkney, James Rumford, Peter Sís, and Ed Young. Conjuring enchanting images to illustrate poems that range from ancient epics like Beowulf and The Conference of the Birds to modern works by writers such as Langston Hughes and Robert Frost, all of these award-winning artists offer new ways of seeing the unique power of poetry. Picture book exhibitions in the Ryan Education Center are made possible by the Mr. and Mrs. William E. Thoresen Fund. The Elizabeth Morse Touch Gallery Continuing Ryan Education Center This gallery exhibits four portrait sculptures representing different time periods and places of origin. Through touch, visitors can learn about the various materials used by the artists and satisfy their urge to touch before visiting the other galleries of the museum. This exhibition has been funded by the Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust. Major funding for educational programming is provided by the Brinson Foundation and the Terra Foundation for American Art. Additional funding is provided by the Barker Welfare Foundation, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Dr. Scholl Foundation, the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation, the Polk Bros.
