By the end f this curse, yu will: Gain an understanding f research and statistical analyses as appraches t explre, describe, r explain management and plicy challenges. Use descriptive statistics and statistical inference t address plicy and management issues; Understand the meaning f analyses using cnfidence intervals, test statistics, and p values; Recgnize the implicatins f the quality and quantity f data;

Demnstrate yur ability t use sftware t manipulate data; Write abut statistical results fr a nn technical audience. In summary, ur gal is fr yu t understand enugh thery and have enugh experience t intelligently use data t make inferences and cnclusins. Furthermre, yu will able t digest and critically assess empirical evidence that yu may encunter. Thrughut the curse, we will examine plicy questins and related data in rder t learn hw t apply analytic techniques. Text There is n assigned textbk fr the curse; hwever, students may wish t use any intrductry statistics text t review basic cncepts. Lessns frm Open Access -- a free nline textbk -- are suggested t accmpany sme class sessins. Sftware Yu will develp skills and knwledge regarding SPSS, the sftware that will be used t cmplete class assignments, including the plicy reprt. SPSS can be purchased frm the University Bkstre Cmputer Stre. SPSS is als available in the cmputer lab at the Evans Schl; remtely thrugh the Evans Schl Terminal server at es-ts.evans.uw.edu using Remte Desktp clients frm Windws and Macintsh cmputers; r remtely thrugh an accunt with the Center fr Studies in Demgraphy and Eclgy (CSDE). T request a CSDE accunt, g t https://csde.washingtn.edu/services/cmputing/access.shtml (Links t an external site.). If yu d like an additinal text fr learning SPSS, I recmmend: Using Statistical Methds in Scial Science Research with a Cmplete SPSS Guide, 2nd editin (2011). Sleman H. Abu-Bader. Lyceum Bks, Inc. The TA is a primary resurce fr yu in learning abut SPSS. In additin, we have a grwing list f SPSS Resurces, and have created a discussin grup in which yu can discuss cding and resurces with ther students. Evans Schl Cmmunity Cnversatin Nrms This curse has adpted the Evans Schl Cmmunity Cnversatin Nrms. Please be aware f these nrms in interactins with instructr, the TAs and ther students. At the Evans Schl, we value the richness f ur differences and hw they can greatly enhance ur cnversatins and learning. As a prfessinal schl, we als have a respnsibility t cmmunicate with each ther inside and utside f the classrm in a manner cnsistent with cnduct in tday s increasingly diverse places f wrk. We hld urselves individually and cllectively respnsible fr ur cmmunicatin by: Listening carefully and respectfully

Sharing and teaching each ther generusly Clarifying the intent and impact f ur cmments Giving and receiving feedback in a relatinship building manner Wrking tgether t expand ur knwledge by using high standards fr evidence and analysis Cheating and Plagiarism Cheating and plagiarism. In this curse, evidence f cheating r plagiarism will result in a zer n the relevant assignment and a scheduled discussin between the student, the prfessr, and Student Services. Cheating is nt ding yur wn wrk (when yu are expected t), which can include: cpying frm anther student s assignment r exam, using ntes when it is prhibited, using an electrnic device when its prhibited, and getting an advance cpy f an exam r hmewrk slutin. Plagiarism is using anther s ideas r wrds withut prper citatin. Curse Syllabi Please be aware that, due t varius circumstances, a curse syllabus may be mdified during the quarter at the discretin f the prfessr. The prfessr will annunce any such mdificatins in class. Sme tips fr this class: Keep up with the hmewrk and if yu are reviewing material frm the ptinal textbk, d s befre class. Keep up with the material. Later material is highly dependent upn a gd understanding f the earlier material. Attend class regularly, keep up with yur assignments, and attend the weekly review sessins. Ask questins. If yu d nt understand smething, ask questins abut it in class r in the review sessins. Usually, yu are nt the nly ne wh has a given questin. Study in grups. A gd way f learning this material is t discuss it with smene else. I recmmend that yu frm a study grup with a regular time t meet. Yu can ask additinal questins, practice articulating yur understanding f the material, review yur respnses t prblem sets, and discuss yur plicy reprt. Hmewrk Assignments The purpse f the hmewrk assignments is t give yu practice in applying cncepts yu are learning abut in class. Hmewrk assignments are graded bth t nte that yu have dne them and als fr crrectness. NO late hmewrk will be accepted. Hmewrk is due at the beginning f class. Try t start the hmewrk n the day it is made available t yu. That way, yu can wrk thrugh the prblems ver time. Each student hands in his/her wn hmewrk, which must be written up individually, althugh yu can wrk tgether n these cnceptually befre yu write yur slutins up.

Ntatin The principles yu will learn in this curse (and beynd) are typically expressed thrugh statistical ntatin. As yu read different textual surces, yu will cme acrss different methds f ntating the same frmula. Yu will receive a ntes sheet t use fr the midterm exam and final exam, with key frmulas using the ntatin that yu shuld becme mst familiar with fr this class. If yu encunter any errrs in the ntatin, please kindly alert Prfessr Cullen and yur TA f them s we can prvide crrected versins. The gal f prviding the ntes sheet is fr yu t fcus n cncepts and applicatin, nt memrizatin f statistical prcedures (althugh, in time, that will fllw). Midterm and Final Exam Yu will be prvided with a clean cpy f a ntes sheet and a calculatr AT each exam. Please d nt take ut any persnal ntes, bks, r calculatrs during an exam (leave everything in yur bag). Grading Categry Hmewrk assignments (5) Percent f Final Grade (credit fr cmplete, n time, and crrect) 15% Midterm (In class n 2/3) Plicy Reprt 30% 25% Final Exam 3/17 2:30--4:20 Parr 108 30% Nte: Please be aware that, due t varius circumstances, a curse syllabus may be mdified during the quarter at the discretin f the prfessr.
