EDUC 59-1 Syllabus COURSE SYLLABUS EDUC 59-1 STUDENT TEACHING I: LOCAL COURSE DESCRIPTION Co-teaching with a responsible classroom teacher in an accredited K-12 institution and participation in professional activities. Applies what has been learned to the actual process of teaching and guiding K-12 students. Offers practice in all phases of teacher responsibility. Lab fee. RATIONALE Student teaching is the culmination of all of the candidate s course work for preparation for teaching. It is essential to provide an opportunity to communicate with university supervisors. Analyze legal issues regarding the teacher s role and responsibilities in education. B. Analyze student teaching experiences through reflective journal entries. C. EDUC 59-1 Syllabus E. Provide evidence of sound teaching practices. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and presentations B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Group Discussion Board Forums () All candidates will participate in Group Discussion Board Forums in the evennumbered module/weeks within the course. Each forum will be completed in 2 parts: a 25-word thread responding to the prompt and two 5 1-word replies to group members threads. In addition to the required group forums, the Discussion Board also contains 4 optional forums where the candidate can post prayer requests, course related questions or comments, and personal information to build a learning community among the course members. D. Attendance Quiz The candidate will complete the Attendance Quiz by answering questions regarding attendance for the student teaching placement. E. Placement Verification The Placement Verification form must be completed after the first day of the placement providing the information requested regarding the placement location and on-site mentor information. This information must be consistent with the information provided by the Field Office. The candidate will let the instructor know if there are any discrepancies. F. Weekly Schedule and Lesson Plans (15) The candidate will submit Weekly Schedules for his/her placement each Friday prior to the module/week the schedule will be used. Additionally, the candidate will submit Lesson Plans each Friday prior to the module/week the lessons are taught. The lesson plans for the first 5 lessons taught for each core subject area will be written as detailed lesson plans. After completing the 5 detailed lesson plans for a core subject area, candidates can use block lesson plans for the subsequent lessons. The differences between completing the 2 kinds and further guidelines are outlined in the course. G. Journal Entries and Weekly Logs (15) At the end of each module/week, the candidate will write a 1 2-paragraph reflective journal entry summarizing his/her week at the placement. The entries must reflect the candidate s experience, what was learned, and what challenges were met. This will be done each module/week and submitted in the format supplied by the course instructor. The candidate will log the hours for each day he/she is in the placement indicating the number of direct teaching hours and the number of non-instructional activities. Page 2 of 5

EDUC 59-1 Syllabus H. Field Experience Summary Check The candidate will submit his/her Field Experience Summary (FES) form for review. The course instructor will provide information needed regarding any area that has not been completed. I. Initial Visit The Initial Visit form is located in the Student Teacher Handbook. The candidate s supervisor will obtain this form from the Student Teacher Handbook and complete it during the candidate s first visit to the school. J. Unit The candidate will develop 1 Unit, which will be used in his/her classroom during his/her placement. The topic for the Unit will be the candidate s choice, but it must be created according to the form and guidelines supplied in the course. K. Candidate Impact on Student Learning (CISL) The candidate will design and administer a pre-test and a post-test to use in his or her classroom during one placement. After administering the pre-test, the candidate will teach a lesson(s) following up with the post-test. The candidate will then take a look at the results of both sets of tests and complete the CISL assignment in Livetext responding to questions about the effectiveness of the lessons they taught and the impact it had on student learning. L. Child Abuse and Neglect Training Module The candidate will complete an online Child Abuse and Neglect Training Module. Upon successful completion, the candidate will receive a digital certificate which he/she will then turn in to the course instructor. M. University Supervisor Observations (3) The candidate s University Supervisor will observe the candidate teaching a lesson 3 times during his/her placement and complete the evaluation form concerning the lesson observed. The form itself is located in the Student Teaching Handbook, so the candidate has access to this form in order to review or prepare. N. Portfolio The candidate will complete the Portfolio he/she has been working on throughout the program and will submit it via Livetext to the course instructor. O. Preliminary Assessment The candidate s cooperating teacher will complete this assessment in the FEM of Livetext during the middle of the candidate s placement. This assessment covers the TCA. P. Final Assessment The candidate s Cooperating Teacher will complete this assessment in the FEM of Livetext at the end of the candidate s placement. This assessment covers the TCA. Page 3 of 5

P-12 Survey Assignment The P-12 Survey Assignment is a way for the candidate to receive feedback from students about their perceptions of candidate instruction and effectiveness as a teacher. The assignment should be completed in Livetext near the end of your student teaching placement. R. Field Experience Assessment The Field Experience Assessment is completed in two parts in Livetext. The completed FES form should be submitted for review and a reflection regarding these experiences should also be included. This assignment must be submitted in Livetext. Failure to complete all areas on the FES form will impact the final course grade and will hinder the candidate from proceeding to Gate 4. VI. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A. Points B. LiveText Submission Policy Assignments that are to be submitted to LiveText must be submitted there in order to receive credit for them. EDUC 59-1 Syllabus If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by email. Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 1% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a % deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. E.
