Principles and Elements of Floral Design Syllabus Ms. Annie Gray Room: Ag Ben Barber Career Tech Academy School Email: anniegray@misdmail.org Ag Center Office :(682) 314-1600 Purpose: This class will provide students with the skills and knowledge related to the floral industry and provide a basic understanding in the proper techniques of floral design. Certifications: Students may have the opportunity to complete the floral certification test through TSFA (Texas State Flora; Association). They will be tested on designs such as a Triangle design and a Boutonniere Design. Fees and test locations will be discussed in class. Interested students will be able to bring information home for parents and them to discuss. Information can also be found on the TSFA website. The Triangle Design and the Boutonniere Design will be taught as a class grade. Course Objectives: Students will: 1. Identify design principles and techniques including aesthetic benefits, classifying individual flowers and plants, and recognizing the proper use of tools and equipment. 2. Demonstrate floral design principles including designs with cut flowers, silk flowers, and other creative designs targeted for specific holidays or special occasions. 3. Evaluate and appraise specific employer expectations and gain professional development skills and characteristics. Grading: Grades in Agricultural Science and Technology courses at Mansfield ISD will be calculated as follows: 1. Course (6 week) averages (the grade prior to the final exam) will consist of two parts and are weighted as follows: a. Test/Projects grades 40% i. Test grades will be earned through group and individual projects and written exams. ii. Supervised Agricultural Experience b. Daily grades 60% i. Daily grades are going to be earned on small assignments throughout the grading period. May include journal entries, current events, quizzes, and worksheets, student participation and work ethics. 2. Number of Grades for class- Each student will have at least eight (8) grades per six weeks grading period. At least TWO of those grades should be a major assessment/test. 3. The overall end of semester grade will be computed as follows: a. Semester Average prior to the final 80% b. Final Exam grade 20% 4. Extra credit may be earned each six weeks in various ways.

Student Expectations: Your success in this class, as well as your lifelong success will depend on developing selfdiscipline. Therefore, the Agricultural Science teachers have adopted the following classroom discipline plan, which is in effect at all times. Your responsible attitude in abiding by these rules will help insure your part in enriching the learning experience of everyone. Classroom Procedures ó I will be taking a daily participation grade. Failing to be prepared will result in a 0 for that day. ó Come prepared every day with a pen, a pencil, paper, and your class notebook and IPAD charged. Every student is required to have a class notebook, which the teacher will collect and check periodically. It is highly recommended that you keep a three-ring binder ó Mandatory assignments will include current events, study guides, notebooks, quizzes, essays, labs and projects. ó No food or drink, with the exception of water, is permitted in class. ó Please be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. ó The bell/clock does not dismiss the class, the teacher does. *****No cell phones or other electronic devices will be used unless for instructional reasons and permission is given by the teacher. Otherwise it will be taken up for the remainder of the period. If this continues to be a habit, then the student will receive a referral. It is encouraged that the student brings their ipad fully charged every day. If the student is caught multiple times on their device (ipad, cell phone, computer, etc.) off task, then the student will lose their privilege to use it that day and it will be taken up. The student will then receive a zero for the day or be asked to make up the assignment for homework. If the homework assignment is not turned in the next day the student will receive a zero. Being off task on technology will not be tolerated!!!! If a student chooses to break a rule the following will apply: 1. Warning 2. Consequences handled by the teacher. 3. Teacher/Parent Conference. 4. Sent to the appropriate assistant principal. ******NOTE: Extreme disruption will be cause for the student to be sent to the assistant principal immediately without going through steps 1-3. ******* Materials List: a. School provided IPAD fully charged each day prior to class (Very Important!!!!) i. One 1, three ring, hard side binder. ii. A supply of notebook paper (about 200 sheets). iii. Writing utensils: pencil, black or blue ink pen iv. Composition Notebook for interactive journals. c. Additional materials/supplies may be required depending upon individual course requirements which will be identified by your Agricultural Science Teacher. Rights and Responsibilities: We each have rights in the classroom that allow the school to function effectively. In order to protect these rights we also have specific responsibilities. Below is a basic list of the most important rights and responsibilities you have as a student. Rights 1. Students have the right to learn. 2. Students have a right to hold their own opinions. 3. Students have a right to know their grades. Responsibilities 1. Students are responsible for turning in work on time, being quiet during test time, coming to class prepared to learn, and following all class procedures. 2. Students are responsible for respecting all people and their opinions. Please raise your hand before speaking out, don't shout at people, listen and reflect before passing judgment. 3. Students are responsible for keeping an updated record of all grades. Please hold on to all assignments after they are returned as proof in case there is a discrepancy in the grades. Bathroom Pass Policy Students may check in with the teacher before the tardy bell rings and then use the bathroom quickly before class starts. If you check-in with me before class to use the bathroom, you must check-in when you first arrive at class, make eye contact, and get a response. Socializing for four minutes and then asking to go to the bathroom is not acceptable. All students will have the opportunity to use the bathroom during class four times each six weeks. Students with valid medical necessity will be allowed to use the bathroom as needed with a note from a parent or doctor explaining the medical condition. Pass Procedure: 1. You must physically have the pass 2. The passes are for bathroom use only. You must go to the closest student bathroom and you must return immediately to class. 3. You may only use pass during an appropriate break in class. 4. Silently bring the pass to the teacher to tear off the corner 5. Sign in and out on the sheet provided 6. Any violation of this policy will result in the immediate loss of bathroom privileges for the remainder of the quarter Reed-Stewart Agricultural Science Center Rules: In addition to the classroom rules, there are specific rules that apply to the barn where the livestock is housed. The following rules are in place for both student and animal safety. 1. Loitering or other activities not directly related to the furtherance of students individual SAE project(s), or engagement in Mansfield FFA Chapter Sponsored activities will not be permitted at the RSASC. Violations of this may be cause for removal from the RSASC, including removal from the classes. 2. Fences and gates are not designed to hold extra weights. Climbing or sitting on them could cause them to break or to become inoperable. 3. General rule of Agriculture is, If you open a gate, close it behind you. It the gate was open, leave it open.

4. For your own safety, please refrain from going into closets, storage areas, animal pens, and offices. 5. No horseplay is allowed in the barn, greenhouse, or classrooms except by actual horses. 6. Animals in the Ag Center are owned by your fellow classmates. The animals are being trained for shows, please do not touch or harass any animal as this may hamper the students ability to train their animals. 7. Animals in the Ag Center are on specific diets. Please do not feed any of the animals. 8. Park only in marked parking spaces. All MISD parking regulations apply at RSASC. 9. Drive responsibly! The speed limit is 15MPH. Carefully watch for people, animals, and equipment. General Information: Class Participation: Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions and activities, students may not opt out unless there is a medical reason that they cannot participate. When working in groups students will break up duties and responsibilities so that all members will have an equal and active role in the group. Absences: It is the student s responsibility to obtain make-up work for missed classes. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero for the subsequent assignment. Students are to arrive promptly to class. If the student is gone from the class at any time for a time of 20 minutes without permission the student will be counted absent (student handbook). If a student leaves class without permission they will receive a referral and be counted absent. Skipping class will not be tolerated!!!! I will find you, and I will write you up. Tardies: Students who arrive to class late without a bus or office pass will be counted tardy for the day and their Assistant Principal will be notified. Refer to the student handbook for more information regarding district policies concerning absences and tardies. TEST RETAKES Students who fail a major test/assessment (below 70%) will be allowed to retake or correct up to a 70% grade. This does not include semester examinations. Students are expected to make arrangements with the teacher to retake or correct a major test/assessment. Students are encouraged to participate in tutoring opportunities before retaking a test. Each teacher will communicate routine requirements for retakes and corrections in his/her course syllabus. All retakes or corrections must be completed prior to the end of each six week grading period unless the student is afforded time, after the six week grading period, as a result of the district s absent/make-up guidelines. LATE WORK Students may be assessed a penalty of no more than 10 points per A or B day (this is not calendar days) for up to a maximum of three class periods before a zero may be given for work not turned in on time. MAKEUP WORK (because of absence for any class missed) Per MISD High School Student Handbook: The teacher may assign the student makeup work based on the instructional objectives for the subject or course and the needs of the individual student in mastering the essential knowledge and skills or in meeting subject or course requirements. A student will be responsible for obtaining and completing the makeup work in a satisfactory manner and within the time specified by the teacher. When absent, the student is afforded the number of days missed plus one additional day to turn in makeup work. [A/B Block Example: A student misses Monday and Tuesday of the week and he/she returns on Wednesday of that same week. Student work from Monday s absence is considered late after Friday, and student work from Tuesday s absent is considered late after the following Monday.] A student who does not make up assigned work within the time allotted by the teacher will receive a grade of zero for the assignment. A student is encouraged to speak with his/her teacher if the student knows of an absence ahead of time, including absences for extracurricular activities, so that the teacher and student may plan any work that can be completed before or shortly after the absence. A student will be permitted to make up tests and turn in projects due in any class missed because of absence. Teachers may assign a late penalty to any long-term project in accordance with time lines approved by the principal and previously communicated to students. WEIGHTED CREDIT Per MISD Board Policy EIC (LOCAL): The District uses a weighted numerical grading system. In calculating GPA, ten points (per semester) shall be added to a student s average in Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Pre-AP courses, Academic Decathlon, and courses considered to be Districtapproved college level dual credit courses. All other courses shall not receive weighted points for completion. No weighted credit point shall be added for grades lower than 70. Weighted grading shall be reflected in the student s GPA and not numerically per course on either the student s report card or transcript. UIL ELIGIBILITY ( No Pass/No Play ) Semester grades are computed by averaging the numerical grades recorded for each of the three six week reporting periods. Each six week grading period will stand alone for eligibility purposes. A student who is declared academically ineligible after a six week grading period will be able to regain eligibility if all of the student s grade averages are 70% or higher at the subsequent 3 week grade reporting period. STUDENT WORK The amount of time needed to complete assignments may vary with each student s study habits, academic skills and selected course load. This includes major projects such as research reports, book reports, major essays, and other assignments teachers designate as major projects. POSTING STUDENT WORK Student grades will be posted in Skyward parent portal within five business days for daily grades and major grades. Special consideration is given to major projects, including lengthy writing assignments. Re-Take Policy: Your retake policy must be included in your syllabus. Your retake policy must be posted in your classroom. Students who fail a major test/assessment (below 70%) will be allowed to retake or correct up to a 70% grade. This does not include semester examinations. Students are expected to make arrangements with the teacher to retake or correct a major test/assessment. Students are encouraged to participate in tutoring opportunities before retaking a test. Each teacher will communicate routine requirements for retakes and corrections in his/her course syllabus. SAE/ AET: Every student enrolled in an Agricultural Science class is required by the state to have a Supervised Agricultural Experience. The requirements for these are made up of the following: All students enrolled in an agricultural class will have a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). The students will have a day a week to work on their SAE in class, but are expected to work on the SAE on their own time as well. Students will record the hours in the online record book at www.theaet.com. Students SAE can be an entrepreneurship, placement, or research project; and must relate to the class. The teacher of the course will approve each student s SAE and provide guidance for his or her SAE. Each week the teacher will grade the online record book to ensure the student has met their goal. A student should make at least 1 entry a week regarding their SAE. The amount of time will be defined through collaboration with the student and the teacher as the student develops their program and will not exceed the times listed below for each class. The times listed below are for both SAE work and homework combined. Students who participate in the FFA organization can add additional hours outside of the classroom environment through collaboration with the FFA sponsors. Records must be maintained using the established Record Book management system (www.theaet.com) which will be graded throughout the duration of the course. Academic Honesty Policy: Cheating, plagiarism (submitting another person s material or ideas as one s own or submitting a project from a prior class), or doing work for another person will receive academic credit are all impermissible. This includes the use of unauthorized books, notebooks, or other sources in order to secure or give help during an examination, the unauthorized copying of examinations, assignments, reports, or essay papers, or the, presentations of unacknowledged material as if it were the student s own work. Disciplinary action may be taken beyond the academic discipline administered by the faculty member who teaches the course in which the cheating took place.

VISITORS IN THE CLASSROOM: Visits to individual classrooms during instructional time shall be permitted only with the principal s and teacher s approval and such visits shall not be permitted if their duration or frequency interferes with the delivery of instruction or disrupts the normal school environment. Teacher and principal must have a 24 hour notice and the visit cannot be longer than 20 minutes. Sometimes visitors will bring animals to the classroom for learning. This will need to be approved by the principle as well. Tutorials: Students will need to communicate with the teacher, and set an appointment that will be flexible for the teacher and the student prior to when they wish to be tutored. FFA: The bylaws, constitution, election process, calendar and all other information can be found on the chapter website at masnfield.ffanow.org. Students are encouraged to sign up for the Mansfield FFA Remind 101 in order to receive reminders and information about current events throughout the year. There will be several ways to pay dues which will be discussed in class dues are $25 or $30 for dues and a shirt. Here are many advantages to membership: (A) Membership in an organization that has over 500,000 members across the US and more than 74,000 members in Texas (B) Eligibility to use what you learn in class to compete on the district, area, state, and national levels (C) Eligibility to earn more than $2,000,000 in scholarships given to Texas FFA Members each year (D) Fun and Unique opportunities to travel across the state and national (E) Leadership positions such as officers are available for students to apply for. The Rendon barn is 13 minutes away from campus next to Tarver Rendon Elementary School. Students will ride the bus from Ben Barber as a class. They will then proceed with class, and then ride the bus back to Ben Barber. Students will arrive before they are scheduled to go back to their home campus. By signing this part of the syllabus you are agreeing to allow your child to participate in all class activities that require to be taught at the Rendon barn. By denying, you agree to allow your student to stay at Ben Barber in an alternate classroom to work on an alternate assignment for the entire minutes of the class on those days.
