HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE LOUIS STOKES ALLIANCE FOR MINORITY PARTICIPATION (HLS AMP)

Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Information and Instructions for Application Houston Community College What is the LSAMP? The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation is designed to increase the numbers of underrepresented students who graduate with bachelor s degrees in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, and technology from one of 6 area universities: University of (UH), Texas Southern University, Southwest Texas State, UH-Downtown, UH-Victoria, and Rice University. Students may enroll in either San Jacinto College or Houston Community College System for their first two years, transferring to one of the participating universities to earn a baccalaureate degree. Transfers are contingent upon being admitted to one of the universities. Being an LSAMP Scholar is both an honor and responsibility. Why be an LSAMP Scholar? As an LSAMP Scholar, you will be among a group of students recognized for excellence in academic coursework and for ambition to pursue either graduate study or a challenging career. You will receive a stipend (the amount is determined during the selection process) in exchange for providing services related to your field of study at an LSAMP institution. You will participate in the Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) on campus. The CLC focuses around a series of excellence workshops designed to reinforce the education you receive in the classroom. These workshops are designed to help you do well in your courses. You will have the opportunity to pursue possible participation in a research experience in your junior or senior year. You may have internship opportunities with local companies. What is expected of LSAMP Scholars? You must have every intention of graduating from one of the participating universities in no more than five years with a baccalaureate degree in science, mathematics, engineering, computer science or technology. You will be required to attend assigned workshop sessions and to participate actively. You will be expected to assist the CLC program and other LSAMP Scholars. You must remain a full-time student. It is preferred that you work no more than 15 hours per week in a job unrelated to your field of study. Your record will be reviewed annually, and the level of support will be determined largely by progress toward your degree: GPA and hours completed each semester. You must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and a math/science GPA of 2.5 to maintain your status as an LSAMP Scholar. If you are interested in becoming an LSAMP Scholar, please: Complete the attached application form. Ask three adults who can attest to your academic credentials or career goals to prepare letters of recommendation on your behalf. Two must be math or science college professors or instructors. Provide each person with one of the recommendation instruction sheets in this packet. Prepare an essay (typed, double-spaced with 1-inch margins on 8.5 by 11-inch paper and no more than 2 pages long), describing your career goal(s), your reasons for choosing the career goal(s), what you have done so far to prepare yourself for your career, why you need financial aid, and why you are interested in this program. Send your application form, essay, and sealed letters of recommendation, transcript, and updated degree plan to the following address: HCC-NW HLS AMP Program Director Bart M. HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE LOUIS STOKES ALLIANCE FOR MINORITY PARTICIPATION (LSAMP) Dear HCCS Students: The U.S. is challenged to supply adequate numbers of scientists and engineers of all ethnicities to keep pace with technological advances. Because more scientists are needed in the science, mathematics, engineering and technology fields, eight Houston-area institutions of Higher Education and the Houston Independent School District have united to implement the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program. Houston Community College is one of the eight universities involved in this partnership. HCCS shares the vision of the LSAMP program, which is to provide Texas and the nation with a greatly increased number of graduates in science, mathematics, engineering and technology fields and to prepare, inspire, and encourage them to pursue graduate education. In pursuit of this goal, HCCS is providing scholarships up to $2,000 per year. HCCS is currently accepting scholarship applications. Scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Technology, or Chemistry. An important feature of this program is a Collaborative Learning Community, which will provide access to computers, tutoring, mentoring, job placement assistance, graduate schools, peer networking, workshops, and internship opportunities. We anticipate offering a Summer AMP Program during the coming summer. Each summer, SWT hosts the Annual Undergraduate Research Conference for H-LSAMP students from all participating schools in the Houston Alliance, as well as from other AMP Alliances across the nation. If you are selected for the program, you will be invited to attend this conference.
