Turning Point 2008 and PowerPoint 2007 Add the Turning Point Toolbar to PowerPoint Create a Participant List Run a Presentation Generate a Report Export Responses to Your Blackboard Gradebook Add the Turning Point 2008 Ribbon to PowerPoint All the regular PowerPoint ribbons are still active when you open Turning Point. To use anything related to Turning Point, use the Turning Point ribbon. PowerPoint does not automatically display the Turning Point ribbon, so you must either open the Turning Point software to work with Turning Point presentations, or adjust PowerPoint s settings to ensure that PowerPoint will always display the Turning Point ribbon. 1. To change PowerPoint s settings so it always displays the Turning Point ribbon, select the Tools button from the Turning Point ribbon and select Settings. Updated 5/20/08
2. Scroll down to the Misc section and find the Add-in Always Loaded field. 3. Click False located next to Add-in Always Loaded. 4. Select True from the menu. 5. Click Done. 2
Create a Participant List A participant list allows you to link students to their responses. Students are linked to their answers by the Device ID number on the back of their response device. There are several ways to create a participant list. Option 1: Manually Entering Response Devices 1. Select Participants on the Turning Point ribbon and choose Participant List Wizard. 2. Select Education Template and click Next. 3. By default the fields called First Name, Last Name, Device ID, and Student ID are selected. If you want to Add or Remove fields, click on the field to highlight it, and then click on the add button or 3
remove button located between the Available Fields and Selected Fields windows. You can also create a custom field by typing in the field name and clicking Add. 4. Click Next. 5. Continue using the Participant List Wizard until you finish. After you click Finish, you will be forwarded to a new screen that allows you to manually enter the students names, response device numbers, and student ID numbers. 4
Option 2: Set up Response Devices through Blackboard If the response devices are set up through Blackboard, the students responses to your Turning Point questions can be automatically exported to your Blackboard Gradebook. Step 1: Set up To set up this option, contact Kathy Keairns at the Center for Teaching and Learning (1-4156; kkeairns@du,edu). She will enroll a bogus instructor into your Blackboard course as a workaround (she ll know what this means). After Kathy enrolls the bogus instructor, go into your Blackboard course and change the status of the bogus instructor from Student to Instructor. Step 2: Change the bogus instructor s status from Student to Instructor. 1. Log into the Blackboard course. 2. Click on Control Panel on the navigation bar. 3. Click on List/Modify Users. 4. Click on the Search button (you don t need to enter a last name or username). 5. Find the bogus name and click Properties. 6. Change the role from Student to Instructor. 7. Click Submit. Step 3: Students register their individual response devices through Blackboard. 1. Students log into the Blackboard course. 2. Click on Course Tools on the navigation bar. 3. Click on TurningPoint Registration Tool. 4. Enter the Devise ID #. Step 4: After students register their devices through Blackboard, you create a participant list. IMPORTANT: Try to have all students register their devices within the same time period and create your participant list after all students have registered. Only responses from students on the participant list will show up in Blackboard. If students don t register their devices, or if you create a participant list before students register their devices, the responses from students not on the list will not show up in Blackboard. In other words, it s best to make a participant list the second week of class, after all students have added the course and have had time to register their devices. 5
1. Once students have entered their response device ID numbers, go to Tools on the Turning Point ribbon and select Blackboard Wizard. 2. Select Import Participant Lists and click Next. 3. Enter the Server Name (http://blackboard.du.edu), and the bogus instructor name and password (provided by Kathy Keairns). 4. Click Next. 5. Highlight My bb and click Next. 6. Select the appropriate class and click Finish. Blackboard will download the students names and response device numbers. 6
Run a Presentation Follow these steps each time you use your receiver. 1. Insert the USB receiver. 2. Open Turning Point (or PowerPoint if you ve enabled the Turning Point ribbon). 3. There are many reporting options you can choose from, including graphical results by question, demographical reports, results by participant, and comparative reports. 1. When you complete the presentation, save the session by clicking the save icon on the Turning Point ribbon. (Important: Use the save button on the Turning Point ribbon, not the save button on the PowerPoint ribbon.) Hint: It is always a good idea to save the session with a unique and descriptive name (e.g., Lect 3 Nominations Sept04_2002). 2. To run a report, go to Tools on the Turning Point toolbar and select Turning Reports. 9
3. You will be provided with a list of all the sessions currently residing on your computer. Select the one you want to analyze. 4. Select which report(s) you want to generate (e.g., demographical comparison and participant results). 5. Click Generate Report and a spreadsheet will download to your computer. 10
