Activities 1. Math and programming workshops 2. Khet Tournament 3. Colloquia 4. Outreach 5. Optics+Photonics

Activities Math and programming workshops We held five three-hour long courses on the following subjects: Linear Algebra Matrix methods in physics Perturbation theory Orthogonal polynomials and applications Green s functions We held a two-hour long workshop on basic MATLAB programming. Khet Tournament: We continued last year s tradition. Adad Yepiz is still the reigning champion.

Activities Colloquia SPIE member and current grad student Hipólito García-Gracia gave a talk on electromagnetically induced transparency with Rydberg atoms. This talk was borne out of his research stay at The University of Calgary. Tecnológico de Monterrey alumnus and SPIE member Carlos López- Mariscal gave a talk on optical tweezers for microfluidics systems. Tecnológico de Monterrey alumnus Blas Manuel Rodríguez Lara gave a talk on phase transitions in extended Dicke models. Jean-Luc Doumont gave a talk on how to give effective oral presentations. Chapter members also attended other talks that were given by Tecnológico de Monterrey s Physics Department.

Activities Outreach (total impact: around 120 people) Monterrey International Book Fair 2011 The student chapter participated with two workshops aimed at K- 12 students. Both of them were given on consecutive Sundays. In the workshop kids saw that white light is composed of the colors of the rainbow; that there is something called polarization, and that it can affect how light is transmitted; and that lasers are a special type of light source, different from the ones they re used to. We had around 60 kids the first Sunday and 40 the second Sunday. Engineering Physics Open House Aimed at high-school students. We gave a talk on what it means to work with optics. We did a workshop on polarization. 23 students attended.

Activities Optics+Photonics SPIE members and grad students Adrián Ruelas, Antonio Ortiz and Manuel Jurado-Taracena attended SPIE Optics+Photonics 2011. All three attended the Studen Leadership Workshop. It was a first for Antonio and Manuel! Adrián Ruelas presented a poster on solitons in non-diffracting parabolic lattices.
