Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations General Certificate of Secondary Education HISTORY B (MODERN WORLD) 1937/11 PAPER 1 (CORE CONTENT WITH GERMANY, 1919-1945) Specimen Paper 2003 Additional materials: Answer booklet. TIME 2 hours. INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Write your name, Centre number and candidate number in the spaces provided on the answer booklet. This paper consists of three sections. In Section A, answer either Question 1 or Question 2. In Section B, answer any one question. In Section C, answer Question 7 and one other question. Write your answers, in blue or black ink, in the answer booklet provided. Read each question carefully and make sure you know what to do before starting your answer. Write the numbers of the questions answered in the box provided on the answer booklet. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question. The total number of marks for this paper is 75. You will be awarded marks for the quality of written communication in part of the following questions: Section B questions 3, 4, 5 and 6; Section C questions 8 and 9. OCR 2000

Some of the questions require you to use Sources. Where this is the case, you will need to use your knowledge of the topic to interpret and evaluate the Sources. When you are asked to use specific Sources you must do so, but you can also use any of the other Sources within the question if they are relevant. SOURCE A Hitler: There s some mistake. It was your small brother I sent for. A cartoon from a British newspaper, 6 September 1939, three days after Britain and France declared war on Germany. It shows Hitler speaking to Mars, the great god of war. (a) Study Source A. Explain the message of this cartoon. Support your answer by referring to details of the cartoon and your knowledge. Section B You should spend about 35 minutes on this section. Answer ONE question from this section. 3 (a) In what ways did the Treaty of Versailles try to ensure future international peace? [4] (b) Explain what Wilson hoped to achieve at the Paris Peace Conference. [6] How far was Clemenceau satisfied with the Treaty of Versaille? Explain your answer. [10] 4 (a) What were the main aims of the League of Nations? [4] (b) Explain why some major nations were not members of the League when it was first set up. [6] The most important reason why the League was weak in the 1920s was its lack of an army. Do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer. [6] The most important cause of the Cold War was the suspicion and rivalry between Truman and Stalin. Do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer. Section C: Depth Study Germany, 1919-1945 You should spend about 70 minutes on this section. Answer Question 7 and ONE other question. 7 Study the Sources carefully, and then answer the questions which follow. SOURCE A SOURCE B A cartoon published around 1930. The cartoon was entitled The Jewish department store eats up German shopkeepers. Hitler knew that the mass public was bound to be affected more by an appeal to the emotions than to sensible arguments. Propaganda had to concentrate on as few points as possible, it had to hammer them home repeatedly, it had to present them in terms of black and white. Choose ONE of the following two questions. You must answer ALL parts of the question which you choose. 8 (a) Describe the ways in which Germany was punished in the Treaty of Versailles. [4] (b) Explain why the period from 1924 to 1929 was one of achievement and success for Germany. [6] Explain how the following together contributed to the fall of the Weimar Republic: (i) the Treaty of Versailles; (ii) the economic depression from 1929; (iii) the appeal of Hitler and the Nazi Party. [10] 9 (a) Describe the methods used by the Nazis to deal with their opponents. [4] (b) Explain why some individuals and groups opposed Nazi rule. [6] Explain how the following together contributed to the failure of opposition to Nazi rule: (i) the methods of the SS and the Gestapo; (ii) the economic policies of the Nazis; (iii) the divisions between the different opposition groups.
