SUMMERSCHOOL 2016 ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL Online Registration opens March 24 - May 27 The Greendale School District will offer Summer School for elementary and middle school students during one five week session this year. The session will take place from June 20 July 22, 2016, (No school on July 4 and 5) and will offer our regular array of summer classes. There will be three time slots: 8:00-9:20 a.m., 9:25-10:45 and 10:50-12:10 p.m. Registrations will be accepted on March 24 until May 27. No registrations will be accepted after May 27th and all classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis so sign up early. On the following pages you will find course descriptions for all classes. Your course selections are for the grade level the students are entering in Fall 2016. SUMMERSCHOOL 2016 SUMMER SESSION Course Selections Intro to 5K.Grade 5K..Time Slot 1 & 2 OR Time Slot 2 & 3 This course is designed for students entering five-year-old kindergarten in the fall. Students will have a chance to develop social and academic skills necessary for success in kindergarten. The course is highly recommended for students who were not enrolled in previous 4K or pre-school experiences. Handwriting Success Grades 5K - 1 Time - Slot 1 OR Time - Slot 3 Meant for those entering 5K and 1st Grade. In this course students will participate in gross motor and fine motor play to help with table top & pre-writing skill development. Get ready for school, multi-sensory activities will be completed to help with drawing shapes, letters, numbers and letter recall and sounds. Legos Grades 5K - 8. All Time-Slots Students will work together to build new and creative creations. Lego set will be available and students are encouraged to bring their own items to build. This is a great class to sign up for with a friend. Puzzle/Game Room Grades 5K - 8..All Time-Slots Students will be exposed to traditional as well as new games from classics like chess and checkers to 24. There will be individual, small group and large group settings. There are opportunities for students to bring in their favorite games to share. Exploration Room Grades 3-8 Time - Slot 2 OR Time - Slot 3 Have you ever heard of a Genius hour? Have you ever heard of a Passion Project? Have you ever wanted to take time and really research something you are truly interested in? Students will have the opportunity to explore an interest and develop a project or end product that demonstrates the knowledge they have learning. Course Selections Exploring Science.Grades 1-2..Time - Slot 1 Students entering first and second grade will have the opportunity to become scientists this summer. Students will practice science skills in a hands-on approach to exploring a variety of science topics. Students will meet in the science laboratory at GMS. Students should enroll for the grade they will be entering in the fall. SUMMERSCHOOL 2015SUMMER SESSION Foss Science..Grades 2-4.. Time - Slot 2 OR Time - Slot 3 Students will have the opportunity to practice science skills in a hands-on approach to learning. Foss Science enrichment kits will be used to help students learn new ideas regarding a variety of science topics. Students should enroll for the grade they will be entering in the fall. Project Based Learning Grades 1-5 Time - Slot 3 Students will "learn by doing," working to solve real-world problems and challenges to gain deeper knowledge of content. Students will also develop their 21st century skills, learning how to effectively collaborate, communicate, problem solve, and think critically. The final products of student inquiry will be shared with others. Math Fun Classes..Grades 1-6 Time Slots Vary Students who are interested in an opportunity to explore new math techniques and strategies will enjoy this class. It is designed for students who are at or above grade level expectations in math. The class gives students a chance to play with numbers through games, puzzles, group work and computers. Students should enroll for the grade they will be entering in the fall. Reading and Writing Adventures Classes..Grades 1-6.Time Slots Vary Students who are at or above grade level expectations in reading and writing will have the opportunity to expand their abilities and deepen their love of literature. Students will engage in literature circles, readers and writers workshops, readers theater and other activities. Students should enroll for the grade they will be entering in the fall. Songwriting...Grades 6-8 Time - Slot 2 Learn how to write your own music! We will explore songs that are already written, make up a bunch of our own, and end by writing your very own piece of music. We will be using a wide variety of instruments and technology during the course of the class. Course Selections Art Classes..Grades 1-8..Time Slots Vary Summer Art classes are offered with different medias/themes weekly. Weeks run as follows: Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Art Survey, and Comic book drawing. Summer art for grades 1-8 offer art enrichment and creative space for students to work and explore materials and ideas. Come join the fun! Central & So. America Culture.. Grades 1-2....Time Slot 3 SUMMERSCHOOL 2016SUMMER SESSION Students will engage in Latin American stories and crafts throughout this cultural adventure. Each week we will focus on two Spanish stories so that students can continue to practice the Spanish language over the summer and advance their skills. Students will also engage in hands on activities and create Latin American crafts each week that they will be able to bring home and share with the family. Central & So. America Culture Grades 3-8. Time Slot 1 OR Time Slot 2 Students will get a closer look at the countries in Central and South America and explore a variety of topics including places,culture, music, traditions, foods, and art. Throughout this course, we will create many different projects while learning about the various cultures within the Americas. Books to Movies Grades 3-5.Time - Slot 1 If you are someone who likes to compare books to movies, this is the class for you. Students will read exciting new text and then watch the movies to compare differences. All reading levels are welcome and reluctant readers are encouraged. Some of the titles could be, How to Eat Fried Worms, Bridge to Terabithia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlotte's Web, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwelier. Cursive Grades 3-5.Time - Slot 2 This class will provide an opportunity for students to learn the disappearing art of cursive handwriting. It will also encourage students to practice legible and attractive written communication. Honors Literature.. Grades 6-8..Time - Slot 3 Are you a gifted reader? Then explore the genres of Fantasy, Dystopian Fiction, Historical Fiction, and more in this class. Each class period will begin with reading an award-winning book of choice and then expand to include activities such as creating an info-graphic, performing readers theater, and discussing favorite books. Topics and novels will be tailored to fit student interest once enrollment is determined. Cooking for Myself.Grades 5-8..Time Slots Vary Students will learn some basic cooking skills and then put them to use. The class will decide as a group what foods will be made. This is a fun class to take by yourself or with a friend. Getting Ready for 6th Grade (One week: July 18 - July 22) Grade 6 Time: 12:15-1:15 Get comfortable at Greendale Middle School. SUMMER SESSION SUMMERSCHOOL 2016 Course Selections Life Fitness..Grades 1-8 Time Slots Vary Get active in this class. This class will be fun and keep you engaged the entire time. Students will participate in outdoor fitness activities, obstacle courses, parachute games, relay races, beanbag activities, and team sports such as basketball, soccer, kickball etc. Yoga and Mindful Thinking.Grades 1-8 Time Slots Vary Yoga and mindfulness has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety while increasing confidence and self awareness. It's a great way for kids to connect with their body, mind, and imagination. In this class, we'll explore movement and stillness through yoga, games, nature, the arts, and much more. Come join us for this unique experience in wellness. Stop Motion..Grades 5-7 All Time Slots Students will learn how to make movies that involve skills such as taking digital photos, downloading the photos to the computer, and then using imovie and/or online apps to add sound effects, titles, and music. Working in collaborative groups, planning, time management, and thinking creatively are other skills that the students will have the opportunity to practice while making their movies. Advanced Science..Grades 7-8 Time - Slot 1 This class will focus on Life Science by studying the evolution of animal characteristics over time. By using images and dissections of animals, students will learn how specific attributes have helped some animals survive. This course will cover 5 animals in detail. Science Grades 5-8 Time Slot 2 OR Time Slot 3 This class uses the Scientific Method framework for students to identify questions they would like to investigate, conduct research, design experiments, and collect and analyze data. 5 Summer School 2016 http://ms.greendale.k12.wi.us/summer-school.html

Course Selections Summer Music ORCHESTRA Orchestra 4 Lessons.Grade 4 30 minute sessions during 3rd time-slot This is a lesson/small group situation. If you select to participate in an orchestra lesson and another class during the 3rd time slot, please know your child will go to lesson during the assigned time and then return to the other class that was selected. SUMMERSCHOOL 2016SUMMER SESSION Orchestra 5 Group Grade 5 Mondays from 10:50-11:50 your child will go to orchestra on Mondays from 10:50-11:50 and then to his or her other class at 11:50. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, your child will go to the other selection. Orchestra 6 Group Grade 6 Tuesdays from 10:50-11:50 your child will go to orchestra on Tuesdays from 10:50-11:50 and then to his or her other class at 11:50. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, your child will go to the other selection. Orchestra 7-8 Group Grade 7-8 Wednesdays from 10:50-11:50 your child will go to orchestra on Wednesdays from 10:50-11:50 and then to his or her other class at 11:50. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, your child will go to the other selection. BAND Band Large Group (Monday& Tuesdays). Grade 6-8..10:50-11:50 your child will go to band on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10:50-11:50 and then to his or her other class at 11:50. On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, your child will go to the other selection. PARTNERING WITH PARK & RECREATION SUMMER ADVENTURE CLUB Looking for additional care before and after summer school? Fun and excitement await you with outdoor activities, arts and crafts projects, board games and team sports as part of this year s program. Because the program is located at the middle school, parents can sign their child up for Summer Adventure and the staff will see to it that students get to the other classes they are registered in. Parents can drop their child off starting at 6:30 A.M. and pick him/her up as late at 6:00 P.M.(10 hour maximum). It is a great way to keep your child supervised and engaged throughout the summer. This summer, Park and Recreation will be offering 2 - one hour sessions from June 20 - July 22 (Monday - Friday) for anyone who is looking for fun activities for their child.
