Frisco, TX 75035 March 2016 Dear Student and Parent(s), Welcome to the FISD Middle School Summer Program. It is my pleasure to serve as the summer school principal to provide additional educational opportunities for FISD students. I have been working with some of FISD s finest teachers and staff members to offer a first-class education to students in the summer months. The goal of the FISD Middle School Summer Program is to provide all students with opportunities for success. In order to attain that goal, summer school students are expected to adhere to the highest standards. In order to achieve success, all summer school students will be expected to work hard, demonstrate responsible behavior, and strive to meet all class requirements. I highly encourage you and your student to familiarize yourself with the summer school policies and procedures outlined in this handbook. Some policies differ from those during the regular school year, and students will be held accountable for all expectations set forth. Specifically, please be aware of the absence and tardy policies. Handbook Purpose The goal of Frisco Independent School District is to prepare students as thoroughly as possible for the next phase of their life. This Academic Handbook has been developed to provide important information for students and their parents. It will assist you in making wise, informed decisions concerning programs for remediation to enable a successful future. Philosophy The purpose of the extended summer program for grades 6 8 is to provide middle school students with opportunities to master the essential elements of incomplete and/or failed courses. For students, summer school provides an upbeat, challenging program. For teachers, summer school offers an opportunity to develop and implement innovative strategies which stimulate learning. The staff of Frisco Independent School District has high standards for academic achievement and citizenship for every student. Goals Each student will achieve at or above the anticipated achievement standard. Each student will build critical thinking skills. Each student will demonstrate positive citizenship and character traits. Each student will graduate from the summer school program. Communication Communication is vital to the success of your student. Please know that summer school teachers do NOT have voicemail extensions. The most effective avenue of direct communication will be email. If your preference is to speak via phone please call the main number at 469-633-5000. 2016 Middle School Summer Program Calendar LOCATION: Roach Middle School 12499 Independence Pkwy Frisco, TX 75035 Before June 6, please call 469-633-5003 for assistance. Starting June 6, please call 469-633-5000 between the hours of 7:30 and 12:30 for assistance. DATES: SSI is offered to students who are required to take the third administration of the STAAR Reading test. Your home campus will be in touch with you should your student be required to take this course. Math SSI: Tuesday, June 7 Tuesday, June 21 o 3 rd Administration of STAAR Math is on June 21st Reading SSI: Tuesday, June 7 Wednesday, June 22 o 3 rd Administration of STAAR Reading is on June 22nd Summer school classes are offered to students who did not pass classes during the regular school year. Students will take one course per summer school session. If your student is required to take two courses, then your student must be enrolled for BOTH sessions of summer school. Session 1: Tuesday, June 14 Wednesday, June 29 Session 2: Wednesday, July 6 Thursday, July 21 HOURS: Students: 8AM 12PM Office Hours: 7:30AM 12:30PM 6

Registration & Financial Information Course offerings are dependent upon student enrollment. Students will be notified and a refund will be provided if a class does not make due to lack of enrollment. REGISTRATION INFORMATION If your student is required to attend any portion of the Summer School Program, you will receive an email outlining registration procedures and including a code required for the registration process. Registration will be online through InfoSnap. Payments will also be made through InfoSnap by credit, debit, or e-check. Should you have difficulties registering upon receiving your summer school email and registration code, please contact the counselor at your home campus for assistance. Campus counselors at your home campus will be available to assist you through Wednesday, June 8. If your student is not presently enrolled in FISD, you will need to attend the June 10 registration session. Please see details below. Thursday, June 9 th, 4PM-7PM: Online Registration Assistance Registration will be available on site at Roach Middle School open to all enrollees Credit cards, debit cards, cash, checks, and money orders accepted. Friday, June 10 th, 8AM 11AM: New to FISD Enrollees only On-site registration assistance at Roach Middle School for new to FISD enrollees Cash, checks, and money orders accepted. 7

FISD Students: o Session 1: $100/class o Session 2: $100/class o Bus transportation included COST Out of District Students: o Session 1: $150/class o Session 2: $150/class o Bus transportation included if your student lives within transportation zone SUMMER SCHOOL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Students on free/reduced lunch will receive a reduced fee of $50 per class when registering for their courses. Refunds are given for students on free and reduced lunch taking courses who have complied with all summer school policies and procedures and gained credit for their class(es). 8

Doors will be unlocked and staff will be on duty starting at 7:30AM. Supervision will not be provided prior to 7:30AM. Students who do not ride the bus should be picked up promptly at 12:00PM. Supervision will not be available for students after 12:00PM, and students are required to wait outside for their rides. Please read this manual in its entirety for more information about transportation services. *Bus schedule will be posted on the FISD Summer School website. 9

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT Summer School is an abbreviated format. Due to this, prompt and consistent attendance is key to student success. ATTENDANCE There are no excused or unexcused absences. Attendance is monitored on a daily and hourly format. Any student who accrues more than 4 hours of missed time from a class will be withdrawn. Time is deducted in 15 minute increments. Tuition will not be refunded if a student is withdrawn. Please refer to the following examples. Example 1: A student misses two days. That student will be withdrawn and tuition will not be refunded. Example 2: A student misses 1 ½ hours on 3 separate days. That student will be withdrawn and tuition will not be refunded. Example 3: A student is absent for one day and is then sent to the office, missing an additional 15 minutes of class. That students will be withdrawn and tuition will not be refunded. TARDY POLICY 1st Tardy - Student will report to the office to be issued a Tardy Slip. Student will accrue absence time for time out of class. Time will be deducted in 15 minute increments. Parents will be notified. 2nd Tardy - Student will report to the office to be issued a Tardy Slip. Student will accrue absence time for time out of class. Time will be deducted in 15 minute increments. Parents will be notified. 3rd Tardy - Student will report to the office to be issued a Tardy Slip. Student will accrue absence time for time out of class. Time will be deducted in 15 minute increments. Parents will be notified that the next tardy will result in withdrawal. 4th Tardy - Student will be withdrawn. Tuition will not be refunded. Please refer to the following example. Example: A student arrives at 8:08. They will be issued a tardy pass and docked 15 minutes of absence time. Tardies due to road construction, car trouble, traffic citations, accident delays, etc. will still be counted toward allotted tardies and absence time. Students can be counted tardy both upon arrival and after scheduled breaks within the school day. 10

BREAKS Students will be allowed two 15-minute breaks within the summer school day. On break students will move to the cafeteria. During break students have the option to purchase food and drinks from the cafeteria or bring a snack from home. Students should also take care of personal needs (restroom, etc.) during break times. Students who consume food or drinks in any other area of the building will be referred to the principal s office. Students may not leave the building during school hours, including break times. BAGS Students may bring small cinch or draw string bags. Backpacks are not allowed. Students who bring backpacks will have them confiscated. DISCIPLINE The following infractions will lead to immediate withdrawal from summer school and tuition will not be refunded: o Possession of a gun/knife or weapon on any kind (facsimiles of real weapons will be viewed as real weapons) o Being under the influence of, or in possession of, drugs/alcohol o Smoking or possession or tobacco products o Fighting o Possession of pornography o Leaving school property without permission Note: This this NOT a comprehensive list and other action may merit immediate removal from the summer school program as well. DISCIPLINE REFERRALS & DUE PROCESS A student may be sent to the principal s office for any behavior that is considered disruptive to the learning environment. Should this take place (and the behavior is not one that requires immediate removal from the summer school program) the following will take place: 1st referral: Conference with Principal/Assistant Principal. Call to parent. Student returned to class. 2nd referral: Conference with Principal/Assistant Principal. Call to parent. Student returned to class if deemed appropriate. 3rd referral: Conference with Principal/Assistant Principal. Student given notice of withdrawal with next referral from class. Student sent home after conference. 4th referral: Student is withdrawn from summer school. (Tuition will not be refunded.) Note: Absences from class, for any reason, including discipline, will count toward the student's accumulated absence hours. Time will be accrued in 15 minute increments. 11

SIGNING OUT OF SCHOOL Parents MUST sign students out of school in person. If a student is signed out of school anytime during the school day, the absence will be counted toward the time he/she is allowed to miss. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off inside the school building during class time. Other types of electronic devices include but are not limited to tablets, handheld electronic games, pagers, beepers, radios, and all communication/entertainment devices. Electronic devices may be used in the cafeteria area before school. Before leaving for class, devices should be turned off and put away. Students may only use devices during class time if/when given permission by a teacher. If a student is using an electronic device during class without permission, or if an electronic device sounds during class time (disrupting the learning environment), then the device may be confiscated by staff members, and it will not be returned to the student until the end of the last day of the summer school session. DRESS CODE POLICY The FISD dress policy will be in effect for summer school. The following statements are guidelines: Sagging pants are not allowed. Jeans, slacks, shorts and all other pants must be worn at or above the waist at all times. Even if a shirt is extremely long, the pants must be worn at the waist. Inappropriate exercise clothing will not be allowed without an appropriate covering garment. Pants and other articles of clothing that are torn, ragged, or pants with holes are not permitted. Sunglasses, caps, hats, bandanas, and other headwear are not to be brought into the building. Hairstyles or unnatural hair colors that, in the judgment of the school principal cause a disruption of the educational environment are not allowed. Clothing should be worn for the purpose for which it was designed. No undergarments or pajamas are to be worn as outerwear. House shoes are not permitted. Boys: Shoes must be worn. Shirts with sleeves must be worn at all times. Shorts that extend to or below the student s fingertips when their arms are held to their side are acceptable. Earrings are permissible. All other visible body-piercing jewelry or ornaments are prohibited. Reasonable standards of modesty must be met. 12

Girls: Sleeveless tops with a minimum width of two-inch wide straps are acceptable. The shirt straps must be wide enough to cover the undergarments. See-through, bare midriff, halter type, or spaghetti strap blouses or any revealing clothing is not permitted. Shirt hems should extend well below the waist of pants, shorts, or skirts. Dresses, skirts, and shorts must extend to or below the student s fingertips when their arms are held to their sides. Shoes must be worn. Earrings are permissible. All other visible body-piercing jewelry or ornaments are prohibited. Tights, leggings, jeggings, and other form-fitting pants must be worn with shirts, skirts, or shorts that extend to fingertip length. Reasonable standards of modesty must be met. Students in violation of the student dress and grooming code will be expected to change to appropriate attire when violations are brought to their attention. If a student leaves school to change clothes, this will count towards the student s absence hours. Dress code violations will be considered an office referral. 13

TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY Frisco ISD uses a variety of procedures to protect our students and provide for appropriate use of technology. First, we utilize a filter for the Internet, allowing us to block unidentified, inappropriate sites. This database of sites is updated weekly. Second, students will be monitored when using the Internet for research. Third, administrators and faculty may review files and messages to maintain system integrity and insure that students are acting responsibly. All secondary students in Frisco ISD must adhere to the following standards: 1. Students must not access, modify, download, or install computer programs, files or information belonging to others. 2. Students must not alter computers, networks, printers or other equipment except as directed by a staff member. 3. Technology, including electronic communication, should be used for appropriate educational purposes only. 4. Students must not release personal information on the Internet. 5. Personal FISD network access information should not be conveyed to other students. 6. If a student finds an inappropriate site or image, he or she must immediately minimize the program and contact the instructor. 7. Students must not create and should report any instances of disrespectful, threatening, or profane communication. 8. Students shall adhere to all laws and statutes related to issues of copyright or plagiarism. *Violation of any of these standards may result in suspension of computer use and/or Internet privileges and/or other disciplinary action. 14

TRANSPORTATION Students may request to ride a bus to and from summer school. A schedule of bus routes and times will be provided on the district website. Bus transportation is provided as part of the summer school tuition rate. PICK UP/DROP OFF PROCEDURES *Bus transportation is available to and from the MS Summer School Program *A bus schedule will be posted on the FISD website. 15

FISD Student Code of Conduct/Summer School Manual Statement While each section of the code is not explicitly included in the Summer School Manual, all policies and procedures contained within the FISD Student Code of Conduct, are to be followed. Every student is guaranteed due process. Should the student or parent request the complete FISD Student Code of Conduct, please call Roach Middle School, 469-633-5000, and request to speak to the summer school principal. Electronic devices will be allowed in the cafeteria before school only for games, texting, and listening to music. No phone calls are allowed to be made on cell phones. Electronic devices that are confiscated will be returned to students at the end of the last day of the summer school session. Dress Code All FISD dress code guidelines are in effect for summer school. Students violating dress code will be required to change before being permitted in class. A change of clothes will not be provided by the school during summer school. Attendance Students missing more than 4 hours of summer school will be dismissed from the program. Time accrues in 15 minute increments (rounded up) for absences, tardies, office referrals, and leaving class to go to the restroom or see the nurse. 17
