Using Career Cruising AN OVERVIEW FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Start at www.careercruising.com

Enter username and password The student s username is EMS-XXXXXX (where the x s represent the student s 6-digit ID number). If the student has not been in Career Cruising before, his password is his 8-digit birthdate (mmddyyyy). However, if the student has ever logged into Career Cruising, he was prompted to change the password. If the student cannot recall the password he entered, the Forgot Password link can be used if he entered an email address when changing the password or his counselor can look it up.

Student Dashboard Click on My Plan

The MY PLAN page The student can always return to this page by clicking on My Plan under his name at the top of the page.

Matchmaker If the student has completed Matchmaker, date and title show up here. Click on the title to see results. (We ll look at the results page later.)

Matchmaker The student must click Start Career Matchmaker to do this assessment for the first time.

Matchmaker The student can enter any title here. This will help identify this assessment from others she may take at a later date. Click Start Now.

Matchmaker The student will answer how well she likes a series of activities.

Matchmaker The results will show a list of careers that may interest her based on her answers to the Matchmaker assessment. The list can be refined by level of desired education For better results, answer more questions. Then click on Start My Skills.

My Skills The student will rate how skilled he is at doing a series of tasks.

My Skills The letters that now appear on the results page indicate how well the career of interest and the skills of the student match. Click on any career to see more details.

Careers The student can see why the career was put into his results list on the Suitable For You? page.

Careers The At A Glance page shows some quick information about the career.

Careers There are many interesting pages for each career. Explore them. The Education page is particularly interesting.

Careers Scroll down to the bottom of the Education page to see a sample high school 4-year plan or program of study. As it notes at the bottom of this sample plan, courses may vary from school to school. These course are just suggestions or ideas to help him complete the 4-year plan.

Other Assessments Return to the My Plan page. Click on My Assessments.

Other Assessments The student can also take a Learning Styles Inventory. This will tell the student how he learns best.

Other Assessments The student will answer a set of questions. Then the results will help him to know more about his own learning style.

Other Assessments By clicking on Other Assessments on the My Assessments page, the student can enter his results from other assessments he may take: ACT, ASVAB, PSAT, and SAT. Simply click on the test and enter the data from the student score report.

My Course Plan Go back to the My Plan page and click on My Course Plan.

My Course Plan Courses already completed and courses in progress have been pre-entered electronically. Grades show for completed courses. There is an area to track progress toward graduation. Click on Learn More to see more information regarding classes taken or in progress and graduation requirements left to complete.

My Course Plan For students who entered 9 th grade in (or after) the 2014-15 school year, there is an Endorsement box. Click on Learn More.

My Course Plan In addition to the graduation requirement tracking, these students will show progress toward their chosen endorsement. (For those who entered 9 th grade in 2014-15 or later.)

My Course Plan Click on Endorsement Electives to see a list of classes that will fulfill that endorsement. If the student would like to explore other endorsement options, she can simply select another endorsement from the drop box and look at the Endorsement Electives for that endorsement. (For those who entered 9 th grade in 2014-15 or later.)

My Course Plan The student will need to complete the 4-year plan by selecting the rest of her graduation requirements and electives. For example, when the student clicks on the space for English III, the selection dialog box opens. She selects the English class she would like to take by clicking on it. A description of the class comes up along with any prerequisite classes and/or future class suggestions. Click on Add Courses to add the class to the plan.

My Course Plan Look closely at the difference between a course that has been selected and a blank placeholder. The selected course is bolded and has a course number. Scrolling the mouse over the selected course will also bring up the name of the course. Always check to make sure the correct course has been selected.

My Course Plan For students with 8 th grade courses, clicking on the gray bar will show those credits. The gray bar will then move to the right side. Clicking on the gray bar again will shift the plan back to the 9-12 view.

My Course Plan Students must complete their course selections in Career Cruising. Skyward will pull next year s course requests from this plan. The exclamation circles indicate a possible problem. Click on the course to see what the problem is, and correct it if possible. In February counselors will meet with students to verify the accuracy of next year s selections, select the 3 alternate courses, and Submit the requests for processing/scheduling.

My Course Plan A student may still change her courses for future years after next year s courses are submitted.

Share My Plan By clicking on Share My Plan, the student can invite his parents to view what he is doing in Career Cruising. He will just need to enter his parent s email address, and an email with access information will be sent to the parent.

My Scholarships & Financial Aid From the My Plan page, a student can go to My Scholarships & Financial Aid and set up a profile in the Financial Aid Selector by answering some questions about herself. This profile will help Career Cruising find scholarships for which she may be eligible.

My Activities & Experiences From the My Plan page, a student may also go to the My Activities & Experiences page where he can begin to list items that may later be a part of his application resume for scholarships, college, and jobs. Career Cruising even has a Build My Resume page to help with that resume.

My Goals & Plans From the My Plan page, the student can also set short and long term goals, make postsecondary plans, and keep track of career planning activities on the My Goals & Plans page.

Print My Plan By clicking on Print My Plan at the top of the page, a student may print whatever portions of her Career Cruising information she desires.

And More The student can research schools and majors, saving those that are of interest to him. The student can also keep a journal of notes as he works toward setting and achieving his goals for the future.

Using Career Cruising As you can see, using Career Cruising can be a fun and interactive way for students and parents to work on educational and career planning. If you have any questions, please contact your counselor.
