higher education at Morley College London Find your future with us

welcome from the principal Thank you for your interest in Higher Education at Morley. As a college community we are excited about our new Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and the opportunities they offer to students. An HND is a great way to continue your studies to a higher level and get professional training in a specialist subject without the time or financial commitments of a full degree. Given that an HND is a professional qualification in its own right you may choose to develop your career after completing the qualification. Alternatively, there is always the option to complete a further phase of study to graduate with a full undergraduate degree. I hope you find the information in this booklet helpful. Please do join us for either of our Higher Education Open Days in August and September. More details on both Open Days can be found on the inside back cover of this brochure. I encourage you to join us at Morley to find your future and realise your ambitions. Morley offers a highly personalised learning experience designed to support your success. I wish you every success in your learning journey and hope to welcome you as a student at Morley College London. Dr Andrew Gower Principal DISCLAIMER The information contained in this guide was correct as at the date of publication. The College will seek to inform students at enrolment of any substantial changes to this information. The College is unable to accept liability if it should prove necessary to cancel any proposed programme of study prior to its scheduled start. In the event of such a cancellation, the College will take reasonable steps to transfer students affected by the cancellation to a similar or related programme of study, if possible, or offer a full refund of fees.

ABOUT US Morley College London is one of the oldest and largest specialist providers of adult education in the UK, with a rich history of providing education to the sectors of society that can be overlooked by more traditional education providers. We have particularly strong ties to the world of music and performing arts the College was established as part of what is now known as The Old Vic, the celebrated composers Gustav Holst and Michael Tippett were Directors of Music at certain points in our history, and we have some stunning performance spaces at our main campus but we also have a number of bright, spacious workshops for art and design, our own art gallery for displaying students creative work, and purpose-built practice spaces for our humanities, health, and applied science courses. Our tutors have professional experience in the subjects they teach, and our convenient location just ten minutes walk from the cultural quarter of the South Bank means that you ll have easy access to galleries, museums and specialist retailers to support your study. ABOUT HNDs This year we re launching our new HND programme, with courses from all three of our schools Visual and Digital Arts, Music and Performing Arts, and Humanities and Applied Sciences. HNDs are a great option if you want to take your study further but are unsure if university is the right choice for you they re roughly equivalent to the first two years of university, but with significantly lower annual tuition fees. Studied over two years, with teaching three days a week, your HND will give you the skills you need to stand out in the job market and succeed in the workplace. It s a respected professional qualification in its own right, so when you complete your course you could go straight into employment; or if you want to take your study further, many UK universities offer a top up degree programme that will award you credit towards a full degree. All of our HNDs start on 25 September 2017.

SCHOOL OF VISUAL AND DIGITAL ARTS HND Art & Design: Fashion Code: HND003A Take your existing fashion and textiles training even further with our HND in Fashion. You ll develop the professional and specialist skills you need to stand out and build a career in the fashion industry. You ll learn in our bright, purpose-designed fashion studio and use industry-standard equipment to bring your creative design ideas to life. Course activities include researching and developing visual techniques, using 2D and 3D pattern cutting techniques, formulating projects, and producing full-scale patterns based on creative designs and working drawings. You ll work through a commercial brief to create your own designs and then translate them into finished, working garments, and throughout the course you will build up a professional portfolio to present your work. At the end of the course you ll be invited to take part in our annual catwalk show, where you ll get the opportunity to show off your creative designs and garments on real models. HND Art & Design: PRODUCT DESIGN (CERAMICS PATHWAY) Code: HND001A Ceramics is an exciting field of design to explore right now, and our Hnd in product design offers plenty of opportunity to expand and develop your skills. you ll learn a range of techniques in our dedicated product design studios and workrooms, under the supervision of tutors with industry experience, including guest lecturer duncan Hooson, who appeared on the BBC s great British Pottery Throw Down. Course activities include developing an understanding of different 3d materials, learning how to select and use materials appropriately for different purposes, and formulating projects to meet design briefs. throughout the course you will build up a professional portfolio to present your work and personal creative vision, and you ll have opportunities to display your work in public, including in our unique on-site gallery space.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS HND music (performance or production) Code: HND005A Music is very closely tied to our history and tradition at Morley, so we re delighted to add the HND in Music to our range of courses. Through a combination of classroom teaching and practical work using industry standard equipment, we ll help you find your greatest musical passion and prepare for a career in either music performance or production. Course activities include identifying musical characteristics and understanding how to use them, planning a musical performance, using the equipment in a modern recording studio, and using appropriate rehearsal techniques. All students take the same modules in the first year, before choosing to specialise in either music performance or music production for the second year. HND performing arts Code: HND005A The performing arts are hardwired into the DNA of Morley College, dating back to our origins in The Old Vic, so we re very excited to introduce our new HND in Performing Arts. We have a number of beautiful performance spaces and specialist learning environments so you can get the specialist skills you need for your chosen career in the performing arts and cultural industries. The course provides a grounding in all aspects of performing arts, including dance, acting, and singing. Course activities include contemporary dance technique, singing and vocal techniques for performance, acting performance skills, and leading a performing arts workshop. You ll create your own performance material and develop your ideas for a range of venues and formats.

SCHOOL OF humanities AND applied sciences HND business Code: HND002A Whether you want to realise your entrepreneurial dream, or you want to go further in a corporate role, Morley s new HND Business programme will provide you with the skills you need to become an effective business practitioner and prepare you for a range of business-related careers. It will familiarise you with the different aspects of business activity, and enable you to design and implement business plans with confidence. Course activities will include creating marketing plans to promote products, setting up and managing business projects, and preparing financial statements and forecasts. You ll learn how businesses of all sizes interact with external agents, such as the government, consumer unions and other businesses, how to recruit new staff, and how to maintain positive relationships with your workforce. HND health & social care Code: HND004A The health and social care sector is the largest in the United Kingdom and set to grow further. It is anticipated that a further two million new employees will be needed by 2022.
