Approval of the Academic Discovery Center and employer. TEXT Business 298 Internship Syllabus. The student is required to print this syllabus and refer to it while performing his or her internship. The syllabus, written assignments, and sample documents can be accessed on BrainHoney. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will gain a greater vision of becoming business professionals and will establish professional career networking links with the business professionals they meet during their internship. Students will write two reports and complete self-evaluations. COURSE OBJECTIVES Increase your professional network THESE ASSIGNMENTS ARE FOR YOU, PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY! Review and obtain job acquisition skills in resume writing, job portfolio preparation, networking, and interviewing. Apply the academic course principles to business practices on the job. Establish career networking links within a business and between businesses. Receive training and consultation from inside and outside sources to help direct learning progress in various job responsibilities. Receive compensation and recognition through wages and valuable letters of recommendation from employer and Business Management Department. INTERNSHIP - REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS The internship is one of the most valuable elements of the degree and should be planned a year or more before the internship is served. When searching for an internship, students should use the following criteria the bottom line Does the internship prepare you for professional work after you graduate? All internships require a minimum 105 hours/15 hours per week during the semester. A full-time internship between the sophomore and junior year in the career area of the student's choice is desirable. 1. Intern with a company where future career options exist. Do you want to work long term for this company or a similar company? 2. Work for an organization with networking opportunities. 3. Intern with a company where skill development opportunities go beyond learning in the classroom. Does the internship provide an opportunity to gain new skills or technologies that will be marketable upon graduation? 4. Intern for a business in which the experience itself is marketable to future employers. Will this experience be something that recruiters will value? Use a 12-point font. 2. Include a cover page with your name, I#, BYU-I email address, phone number, position, company, location (city & state), supervisor name and title, and interviewee name & title. 3. Single space your reports with a blank line between paragraphs. REPORT 1 NETWORKING REPORT MINIMUM 2 PAGES IN LENGTH. Part 1 Internship summary and goals All reports should include a summary of your position and roles and responsibilities. Please also detail out the process that you took to obtain your internship. The summary should also include your goals for the internship and what you would like gain from the experience. Part 2 Networking Report Set up an informational meeting with the highest ranking official that you can within your organization or the most experienced professional in your industry (family members, current students, & direct supervisors will not count). If you are working with a small organization (less than 25 employees), I would encourage you to Business 298 page 2

network with someone outside of the organization. All network reports should include; the name, and title of the interviewee, details of their educational background and a brief summary of their professional experience. Conduct an informational interview, below are some ideas and suggestions for things to discuss: 1. Exploring your field: a. Topics to discuss: a. Details of their current role and responsibilities b. The career path taken to get to their current position c. What are the typical entry-level positions in their organization/industry d. The importance of graduate school in the industry e. Suggested resources to find more information on the industry f. Advice or suggestions for being successful in their industry b. Pre-work: Develop your own set of questions to ask c. Write a summary report including: a. A summary of what was discussed and learned. b. What were the three most important things that you learned? c. What actions are going to take based on what you have learned? 2. Understanding the Organization: a. Topics to discuss: a. How the company is organized (products, services, size, mission, business model, etc.) b. What is the main role or function of the interviewee c. What are the biggest challenges facing the organization and specifically the interviewee d. The importance of graduate school in the industry e. Advice or suggestions for being successful in their industry b. Pre-work: Develop your own set of questions to ask c. Write a summary report including: a. A summary of what was discussed and learned. b. What were the three most important things that you learned? c. Based on what you learned about the business, how will it change your approach to your internship, if at all? d. If you had 15 minutes with the CEO of your organization what suggestions would you make. 3. Business Ethics & Work/Life Balance a. Topics to Discuss: a. How has the interviewee balanced work, family, and church (if applicable). Typical demands on time, sacrifices made, and things they have learned. b. Examples of ethical issues that they have faced (how frequently they occur, and how they have handled them) c. Suggestions for business etiquette and protocol (appropriate topics of conversation, cocktail parties, business recreation (golf), etc.) b. Pre-work: Develop your own set of questions to ask c. Write a summary report including: a. A summary of what was discussed and learned. b. What were the three most important things that you learned? c. What good strategies did you learn about how to handle ethical dilemmas in your future career? Business 298 page 3

d. What are the keys that you discovered to having a balanced life? At the end of the semester you will be submitting a revised resume after two individuals have reviewed it for you and provided feedback. Start thinking about who you would like to complete this task for you and use this as a networking opportunity. FINAL REPORT This is your opportunity to report on your accomplishments, gained knowledge, and improved skills. From your mid-semester report, restate what your goals were and what you were hoping to gain from your experience. Describe honestly, how you did in accomplishing your goals and if you were able to gain from the experience what you were hoping to. Please state what were the most important things that you learned from the experience, what you would have done differently if you were able to do the experience again, how you feel this experience has prepared you for your future career and whether or not you expect to receive a future internship or full-time offer. Please give any advice that you would offer to future students as they go out on their internships. THIS EXERCISE IS TO EXPAND YOUR NETWORK AND IMPROVE YOUR RESUME PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY) List the name, company, and title of the individuals who reviewed your resume. Please use these resume reviews as a networking opportunity and stretch yourself and have an industry expert review your resume. Submit your original resume and then submit your updated resume with the changes you made to it. Please submit your summary as a 1 page word document. We would like to use these as testimonials to inspire future students, please indicate if you are not willing to allow us to potentially publish your experience this will have no effect on your grade.
