This course is an integrated study of the main developments of the visual art forms (architecture, sculpture, and painting) from Paleolithic man to Early Renaissance. This course is recommended to students planning to major in art. This course partially satisfies requirements of S.B.E. 6A-10.030. Measurable Objectives Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: 1 Display adequate knowledge of subject matter by scoring 70% correct response on tests 2 Research a limited problem in the field of art history and synthesize it in a brief report or term paper 3 Show knowledge of the scholarly sources of art history by quoting outstanding references in reports, on tests, and in class response 4 Integrate the terminology of art history into writing on tests, reports, and in class response 5 Demonstrate an increased appreciation for the cultural significance and contribution of art history Course Outline 1 Prehistoric and primitive 2 Art of the ancient world 3 Medieval Art 4 The Renaissance Text Book (required) Art History, Portable Edition, 4th edition books 1 & 2, and Artslab. Grading Policy Attendance is required. Every student is responsible to sign in at the start of each class. 1 excused absence will be allowed. Class will start promptly, so be on time. Grades will drop accordingly: 3 absences = A to B, 3 or more absences means you can be dropped without warning. -Excessive Tardiness will also affect your grade -If you miss a class, you are responsible for learning what was missed. Students will select a study partner whom they can contact to find out what was missed -Seminole State College Art Department Policy States that any student missing more than 3 classes may be withdrawn from the class -Students will be allowed to make up exams on an individual needs basis (after making arrangements with me) Student Expectations -It is your responsibility to drop this course, should you need to, by 8-31-12 or withdraw by 10/29/12 for a W1 -Students are responsible for all work covered in class. We will have a Mid-Term and Final Exam in this course In addition to these exams we will have 4 quizzes and you will also have 3 projects throughout the term A breakdown of the value of each is as follows Mid-term and final exam = 260 pts (120+140) 3 projects* = 300 pts Homework = 180 pts 4 Quizzes = 120 pts Total Points = 860 pts Attendance and participation more than 2 absences, and non-participation, will adversely affect grade Please Note *Details about the projects will be given out during the semester. A missed exam or quiz will be recorded with a 0 No make-up will be allowed without a compelling reason or documented proof. Arrangements must be made with me.
