2. CONFERMENT OF AWARDS IN THE SCHOOL OF LIFE SCIENCES The Vice-Chancellor will stand and say: "I call upon the Deputy Head of the School of Life Sciences, Professor Daniel Osorio. He will then sit down. The Deputy Head of School will go to the lectern at the top of the stairs on the right hand side of the platform (facing the audience), bowing to the Head of School as he reaches the lectern. 2.1 UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS 2.2 Bachelor of Science "Head of School, I will now present to you graduands from the School of Life Sciences. 2.3 Master of Chemistry For the degree of Master of Chemistry in Chemistry For Chemistry (with an industrial placement year) As the Deputy Head of School begins to read the names, the Head of School will stand. The names will be read in the order shown in the Deputy Head of School s list of in-person graduands. After the name is read, the graduand referred to will cross the platform, shake hands with the Head of School, and bow. S/he will then leave the platform, return to his/her place and sit down. 2.4 POSTGRADUATE AWARDS 2.5 Doctor of Philosophy "Head of School, I will now present to you for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy... A.. As the Deputy Head of School begins to read the names, the Head of School will remain standing. The names will be read in the order shown in the Deputy Head of School s list of inperson graduands. After the name is read, the graduand referred to will cross the platform, shake hands with the Head of School, and bow. S/he will then leave the platform, return to his/her place and sit down. "Head of School, this concludes the list of graduands from the School of Life Sciences. The Head of School will bow his head to the Deputy Head of School in acknowledgement and sit down. The Head of School will sit down. 3

CONFERMENT OF DEGREES (AND LATE DEGREES IF REQUIRED) The Deputy Vice-Chancellor will go to the lectern at the top of the stairs on the right hand side of the platform (facing the audience), bowing to the Vice-Chancellor as he passes in front of him. If there are any late graduands, papers with the graduands name and degree title will have been passed to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor earlier in the ceremony in order for the Deputy Vice- Chancellor to familiarise himself with the names. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor will say (replacing Bachelor with Master and Arts with Science, or Engineering, Physics or Chemistry etc. ) as appropriate: Vice-Chancellor, I present to you for the degree of Bachelor (or Master) of Arts (or Science etc.) in the School of... The Vice-Chancellor will stand. As the Deputy Vice-Chancellor begins to read the names, the Vice-Chancellor will remain standing. After each name is read, the graduand referred to will cross the platform, shake hands with the Vice-Chancellor, and bow. S/he will then leave the platform, return to his/her place and sit down. After all the graduands have been presented, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor will say: Vice-Chancellor, all the graduands have now been presented at this ceremony and the moment has come for the formal conferral of degrees of the University of Sussex. I therefore ask you to confer their degrees on those presented at this ceremony and to the other graduands who have indicated their wish to graduate in absentia." The Vice-Chancellor will then say: I confer degrees on all those referred to by the Deputy Vice- Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor will sit down the Deputy Vice-Chancellor bowing to the Vice-Chancellor as he passes in front of him. 4
4. CLOSURE OF THE CONGREGATION The Vice-Chancellor will stand and say a few words of farewell concluding with: "I now declare this Congregation closed." The Chancellor's Procession will then leave the stage in reverse order (the Vice-Chancellor, proceeded by the Mace, leading), followed by the Faculty Procession. 5
