DEAR EDUCATOR, Welcome to the new Museum of the American Revolution! After many years of hard work, we opened our doors on April 19, 2017, on the 242nd anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord. Since then, it s been full steam ahead, as we held our first Educator Open House in May and learned many lessons over the course of our first Spring with student groups. Now we are looking forward to the 2017-2018 school season and new chances to welcome and serve you and your students. Returning for the new school year is our Through Their Eyes program, which introduces students to the major causes and events of the American Revolution through the experiences of 18 common men, women and children who lived through it. In the spring, this experience is 90 minutes, and includes selected stops in our galleries and the signature film Washington s War Tent. New for this fall, we invite you to extend your class visit another 45 minutes by adding a themed activity. Students can explore the experiences of African Americans during the Revolutionary Era, dig into the economics of the Revolution, or learn to think like a historian while examining artifacts. In each, students will use the classrooms of the John M. Templeton, Jr. Education Center to practice critical thinking skills and connect to content knowledge explored in your classroom. All programs support relevant academic standards. Please visit our website to explore our growing collection of resources for teachers, located at www.amrevmuseum.org/educators. And, of course, plan to attend our next Educator Open House on October 4, 2017 for the latest news and notes about student and teacher programs at the Museum. Thank you for all that you do we look forward to supporting you! Education Team John M. Templeton, Jr. Education Center Museum of the American Revolution
Enjoy a journey through the remarkable story of America s founding while gaining a deeper understanding of the people, events, and ideals that gave birth to a nation.
THROUGH THEIR EYES: MAJOR CAUSES AND EVENTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION CORE PROGRAM We all know that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin helped lead the American Revolution, but what about the everyday men, women, and children who also helped create a new nation? As they explore select galleries, students in grades 4-12 will: Learn about the primary causes of the American Revolution and the major events of the war. Follow the stories of Revolutionary era soldiers, sailors, civilians, women, children, free and enslaved African Americans, Loyalists, and Revolutionaries. Witness authentic Revolutionary weapons and equipment and experience immersive environments, tableau with life-sized figures, and first and third person interpretation. Stand beneath a full-scale replica of the Boston Liberty Tree and discuss Revolutionary ideals. Climb aboard a privateer ship and learn about the war at sea. Encounter photographs of America s first Greatest Generation and peer into the eyes of some of the men and women who helped create the United States of America. Experience the 12-minute Washington s War Tent film that brings to life General Washington s extraordinary leadership and reveals the tent that was his field headquarters. This program is led by trained museum staff and is tailored to meet the needs of students in each grade level. This program is 90 minutes in length.
THEMED PROGRAMS NEW FOR THE 2017/2018 SCHOOL YEAR! Add a 45-minute classroom activity to your visit! Available September through March. Grades 5-12 $2 per person THINKING LIKE A HISTORIAN Historians use objects, documents, and contextual knowledge to build an understanding of the past. In this experience, students will do the same, using their eyes, hands, and critical thinking skills to explore what objects and documents can tell us about the past. WHOSE LIBERTY?: AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION FEEDING THE ARMY: AN ECONOMICS DILEMMA How did the Continental Army get the food it needed to stay in the field against the mighty British Army? This is a story of supply and demand, of scarcity, of currency, and more in short, it s a story about economics! In this experience, students will interact with objects, read the words of soldiers and generals, and play a game of chance and knowledge as they explore one of the most complex challenges of the Revolutionary War. As American Colonists protested what they perceived as oppression by the British, they held hundreds of thousands of people of African descent in lifelong servitude. For these legally enslaved men, women, and children, the turbulent 1760s-1780s provided moments of both opportunity and frustration. In this program, students will use artifacts, documents, and activities to discover how African Americans, like Phillis Wheatley and London Pleasants, sought freedom for themselves and their families, whether that meant supporting the Revolutionaries or the British.
