Society of Hispanic Engineers Rutgers University Shadow Program Invitation April 2 nd, 2015 to April 4 th, 2015 The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1974 by a group of Hispanic engineers to promote the advancement of Hispanics in engineering and science. The Society has the objective to serve as role models and to promote educational programs for minority youth. Currently, SHPE is composed of student and professional chapters with membership approaching ten thousand. The Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHE) at Rutgers University was founded in 1984 by a group of young, aspiring Engineers and they adopted the motto to recruit, retain, and graduate minority students in science and engineering. In 1988, SHE became a recognized chapter of SHPE. Currently, we have a membership of seventy students representing every engineering major and many science disciplines. A crucial part of SHE s agenda is our involvement with our community, and especially with high school students for whom we host a yearly Shadow Program. The program s objective is to motivate students in their junior and senior years to pursue higher education in the science, engineering, technology, and math field. This year, the Shadow program is taking place on Thursday April 2 nd to Saturday April 4 th, 2015. Parents will drop off the students Thursday night at Rutgers University, Busch Campus in Piscataway NJ. Parents attendance is highly suggested and recommended, as they will have a financial aid information session Thursday evening. This will be very helpful information on how to finance your children s college expenses. Parents and students will be part of a brief meet and greet session before going to their respective workshops. While the parents workshop is taking place, the students will participate in team work activities and an interesting project with the help of undergraduate students. The students will spend the night at Rutgers residence halls where they will always be in the company of SHE chaperones. Friday morning they will partake in a day of workshops that will aid them in preparation and understanding of the University application process and financial aid. Also the students will attend professional workshops that will help them develop their leadership and communication skills. On Saturday, the students will participate in the School of Engineering Department Tours, where they will have the chance to tour laboratories, and projects done by college students. They will also have the opportunity to network with Rutgers University professors and alumni. It is our greatest pleasure to invite you to take part in this year s program.
