MAHARASHTRA NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY, MUMBAI (MNLU, MUMBAI) PROSPECTUS -2015-16 Maharashtra National Law University, (for short MNLU Mumbai) is the latest of the National Law Schools established in India. The Maharashtra National Law University Act 2014, has been enacted by Maharashtra State Legislature under the Maharashtra Act No VI of 2014 on 20 th March 2014. The Act envisages establishing and incorporating National Law Universities in the State for the development and advancement of legal education and for the purposes of imparting specialized and systematic instruction, training and research in systems of law and for the matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. The object of the university is to advance and disseminate learning and knowledge of law and legal processes and their role in national development, to develop in the students and research scholars, a sense of responsibility, to serve society in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, law reforms and the like, to organize lectures, seminars, symposia and conferences to promote efficient instruments of social development. In order to advance the set goals MNLU Mumbai aspires to develop active partnership with eminent law academics, distinguished judges, leading lawyers and corporate conglomerates and foster to the claims of development in harmony with the changing society. MNLU Mumbai is assuming to cherish a very modest beginning. The vision is clear and the initial efforts are accelerated. To catch to the needs of time, MNLU Mumbai finds temporary space in the lush green surroundings of the famous Ismail Yusuf College Campus at Jogeshwari East, Mumbai. The efforts of the university is to organize MNLU Mumbai a conducive place for legal study by grooming it as a center of excellence befitting to its stature in Bombay. The first batch of students will be taking admissions with effect from 2015. There are many advantages of being the first batch students of any Institution of excellence they shall be the brand ambassadors for the institute at the same time there shall have to conjure certain challenges in exploring everything new within the institution. A lot more learning from sacrifices with wide scope to partake in institution building, shaping of career and courses and contributing to the world from the day one always awaits for them. 1

MNLU, Mumbai garners exploit the inherent academic strength from the vitality of legal fort of Bombay City. The long standings of experience and aspirations of lawyers, judges and knowledge society at large in the State of Maharashtra are being explored. MNLU, Mumbai aims to tap and cultivate the innate potential of the financial capital of India in order to provide platform to the students to fulfill their set goals and in turn contribute as partners with value based global leadership. Driven by the credo rule of law - knowledge society and becoming a part of the national law university fraternity, MNLU, Mumbai is committed to collaborate with all such academia to cherish the goals of the institution. MNLU is garnering resources mobilizing all such facilities to cater to good class rooms, hostels for boys and girls, moot court hall, library and reading room. The institutional efforts shall always be to provide a learning environment encouraging to promote students cognitive and social development. The students will find opportunity to focus on redefining legal education to better the meaning of learning process. MNLU, Mumbai shall strive to foster a spirit that seeks excellence. MNLU for the year 2015 will start with B.A., LL.B (Hons.)/ B.Com.,LL.B (Hons.) with credit transfer system at the five-years integrated UG Program with 50 seats as per the Maharashtra State Reservation Policy +10 Foreign/ NRI seats. The choice of the students to B.A., LL.B (Hons.) / B.Com.,LL.B (Hons.) will be based on merit cum preference. There shall be a maximum of thirty students in take in each of B.A., LL.B (Hons.) and B.Com.,LL.B (Hons.) stream. In the year to come expansion with increasing number of intake and courses will happen. The admission process will be through admission test. One-year LL.M (Legal Pedagogy and Research) with 10 as per the Maharashtra State Reservation Policy + 02 Foreign/ NRI seat at PG level will also be made available. The intake of students will be through admission test. LL.M course will be full time with rigorous of teaching, learning and research based education. 1. In case of castes, if the non-creamy layer certificate or validity certificate is required as per G R., then the concerned candidate must enclose relevant certificate with the application form. In absence of such certificate, the candidate concerned will be treated as a candidate of open category. 2. Non-creamy layer certificate should be in accordance with the GR. released from time to time by the Government of Maharashtra. 3. The reservations for castes/ sub-castes will be applicable in castes and sub-castes and changes in category as per Government of Maharashtra s Resolutions released from time to time. 4. In the 50% of the open category and 50% of the reserved categories, the following percentage of seats will be independently reserved for the following types of candidates shown below: - (internal reservation): a. Candidates having a certificate from the civil surgeon specifying that the candidate is physically handicapped and having minimum 40% disability 3% (three percent); b. Son/daughter/husband/wife of active military service personnel and ex-military services Personnel himself 2% (two percent) c. This being the internal reservation, seats will be filled on merit in the beginning only, correspondingly the number of seats will be reduced from the respective subjects and categories. 5. 30% (Thirty Percent) seats of the intake capacity of MNLU Mumbai is reserved for women as per the provisions in GR. (GR.No..JEF-/1000/723/2000/MS-1, dated 17 th April 2000. For the divorced women, destitute women, widows who have produced certificate from the competent authority be given preference against equal merit, amongst 30% reservation fro woman as per the GR No.STC/2002(18/02) Mashi-3 dated 26 th February 2002. 3

Courses: In order to obtain the degree, a student of B.A., LL.B (Hons.)/ B.Com., LL.B (Hons.) is required to score 200 credits by pursuing the mandatory courses prescribed by the Bar Council of India and other elective courses offered by the University. MNLU Mumbai is also exploring possibilities to impart foreign language courses such as German, French and Chinese. The courses shall be extra and optional. 2. As the courses will advance depending upon the availability of the resources such as teachers and expertise and basing on the best interest of the students additional elective courses will be considered with flexibility of credit transferability. 3. The elective course will be minimum of 15 hours duration with one credit; offered as and when the eminent teachers are available to design, conduct and evaluate the course in wholesome. One-year LL.M (Law Pedagogy & Research): The LL.M students admitted in appropriate cases will also be designated Teaching Assistants and will pay a small stipend in consonance to the service output. The other rules of reservation to physically handicapped, ex-service personnel and women will be followed as per the State Government GO from time to time. The university reserves the right not to fill the seats in case no suitable student found, during counselling. Specialization- Legal Pedagogy and Research. The course is basically aimed to nurture in campus quality legal education and research for the purpose of creating a team of dedicated, focused law teachers to fulfill the special academic needs of the MNLU Mumbai in particular and national law universities and other lead law centers of the country in general. The idea is to muster committed academics by preparing prospective teachers and researchers in law. The course is loaded with curriculum planning, pedagogy, law library accession, legal editing, e-learning and teleconferencing, team building in project studies, creative knowledge tests, skill quizzing, examination, evaluation, admission and law school administration. This course is in accordance with the mandates of UGC guidelines 2012. The Center for Post- Graduate Legal Studies (CGPLS) of the MNLU Mumbai will garner a team of dedicated senior teachers from across the country to guide the post-graduate students and law researchers. The course will be imparted under a semester system with minimum of 18weeks of teaching/ research /practical exercises/ seminar and research in and outside the classroom. Each week will have at the least 30contact hours. The one-year LL.M Programme is 24 credit based with three mandatory courses of three credit each and six optional courses with two credits each plus a dissertation of three credits. MNLU Mumbai for the year 2015-16 offers a specialized LL.M Programme in Legal Pedagogy and Research, as follows: Foundation Courses: 1. Research Method and Legal Writing: 3 2.
